I've taken quite a break (3 months) from posting to the blog, but to celebrate the fourth year as a collective website, I figured it was worth a post. There's no better talent to be featured on our fourth anniversary than Berliner Sven Weisemann. While this mix certainly isn't an excluse to IT — shit, I'm not even sure he knows of this site's existence — but it's a groovy set to help you kick in the New Year.

IT isn't quite dead yet, but the decrease in quantity only eludes to the increase in quality!

Various Artist compilations these days seem to misunderstand the purpose of this type of release. While there may be many creative minds to form one piece of music, a congruent direction is often lost in the final translation. There's always an exception to the typical, and Rick Wilhite's aptly named Vibes New and Rare Music seems to nail that point with every release. An ongoing series now, Vibes is named after the Godson's record store in Detroit. With a little help from his friends, the shop comes breathes life through auditory transmissions.

With three varied tempo tracks, the four musicians behind this installment of Vibes create dance tracks for all situations. That is, of course, if you plan on keeping your set full of classic Detroit house. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but don't expect any genre-defying sounds in this one. Is that really what's important in 2011, though? As house-rhythm music surpasses its quarter-century life, producers are experimenting with just about everything these days. But deep house remains a consistent mindset among enthusiasts

The release opens with Marc King's “Can U Feel It,” a playful tune with powerful vocals yet warming melodies. TJ and Raybone's “Gone” slows everything down a bit, hinting at a memory when everything made a bit more sense, musically speaking. It's easy to forget what makes a great house track, as so many emulators are taking to the sound like it's a sport. Even with three exceptionally produced tracks, “Gone” still rings in my mind when the music stops.

But nothing here is really new, as we've seen each of these songs released with other titles. That doesn't change the overall appeal of these three tracks as they appear together, and the EP accurately lives up to the history of the record store.

Founded in 2008, DP-6 Records has already released quite a catalog of House and Techno. The first half of their catalog may not feature anything too exhilarating or memorable, all of the recent releases from this young Russian label are quite the opposite. Label heads Alexey Filin and Vadim Indigo used the drive and passion behind the DP-6 Records' beginnings and formed a vision, of sorts. The current direction of the label is a product of all that hard work and desire. It's quite beautiful, really.

And that brings us to the current DP-6 release, no less from the two label bosses themselves. Touch is a six track EP that continues along the Deep House and Dub Techno plane. Without spoiling any of the fun, it's best to describe these collective of tracks as sonic elements that comprise a larger picture. Each tune plays effortlessly off of the previous, feeding into the next song with care. With this production precision, it's clear that the DP-6 duo have found their ubiquitous sound in Techno music. The Touch EP is no exception, and the steady effort is certainly felt throughout each of the tracks.

For more than a decade now, Armon Bazile has carefully crafted his individuality within sound. Through various releases under different monikers, the Oakland musician has reminded us of the beautiful relationship between house, techno and hip hop. Keeping a soulful attitude among the rugged percussion and thumping basslines creates quite an interesting feel to the music, regardless of the intended genre. But it's more than just techno, electronic music or whatever label you need to apply. Armon has established a feeling so deep, its connections to the listener are immediately felt.

With that same mentality, Armon comes to Further Records under his o1o name. Futurespective features seven original tracks that waste no time introducing themselves. Each song tends to offer a different perspective to a melodic emotion, bonding everything together nicely. The full release rolls along at a slow and soothing pace, and listeners will enjoy the storyline of audio presented here. Whether he realizes it or not, Seattle-based DJ and producer Dave Pezzner has found a rhythmic hotbed of creation in his music this year. Always one for including attentive production techniques with beautifully-crafted sounds, the Pacific Northwestern musician is able to achieve a nice balance in music and emotions on his newest release for 8Bit.

The Mesh EP delivers three originals and one remix from little-known producer, Zepp01. Pezzner brings his soulful touch of past memories forged with tight, modern production values to the listener once again, creating lasting impressions with every moment. The title track opens with a fierce groove and vocal loop that pair nicely, establishing a sense of percussive glory that never seems to grow weary. While many struggle with creating that interesting groove mixed with a house beat, Dave seems to add an original flair to such a watered-down idea of music. Introductions is slowed down and stripped a bit, offering a bit of a break between each of the sounds. This track is perfect for those still holding on to the past dreams of minimal dance music, but that doesn't detract from its intentions. Dave continues to use typical vocal stabs, and yet the feeling is not lost. Isn't that the sheer beauty of house music, though? A formulaic approach to creating a series of songs is predictable in theory, but the inclusion of such warm and meaningful sounds is the attraction. Circles follows suit, with resonating chords and dancing drums to keep everyone buzzed. The Zepp01 breaks away from the three-track mold that Pezzner has created with funk-infused jazz, giving the music a spaced atmosphere. But just like most great house releases, the words and descriptions are still irrelevant. The music speaks for itself, and Dave Pezzner's Mesh EP does a fine job with that.

Since its inception, Claqueur Records has always aimed its releases for both home and club listening purposes. With this very notion, a sound three decades in the making continues to breathe life into its core audience who desperately wish to find something more in electronic music. It takes dedication and commitment from everyone involved in a label to provide a glimmer of hope.

Here Today comprises of German resident musicians Engin Öztürk and Florian Schirmacher. The original vocal and instrumental tracks contain a moody bass loop, resonating chords and patient house rhythms in one simple package. This formula sounds routine and basic for avid deep house fanatics, but the electronic duo manages to keep an interesting flow of ideas throughout this house structure. UK veteran Ian Pooley heads the first remix, no doubt adding his signature thematic tone to the existing deep nature of Down Here. Including wild pitch elements to the second half of the track, Ian creates a track perfect for an energy-packed dancefloor. The Flying Remix, rearranged by Berliners Andreas Baumecker and Gokhan Demiray Biond, features a more pacing rhythm section and emphatic chords to compliment Ian's version. While both of these remixes are well done, you can't help but love the original instrumental and vocal mixes that much more.

As a production and live duo from Russia, Alexey Filin and Vadim Indigo have managed to create a deep community with their DP-6 moniker and related record label. Like many of the artists and releases, resonating chords clash in a warm mixture with syncopated rhythms and weathered production. While many critics feel that the dub flavoring of techno music has become a dated and ironically arid sound, DP-6 and company have managed to keep the music interesting and personal.

A strong four-track EP, Heart and Mind begins with the patient sounds of Cricket, a tune clearly mimicking the beautiful atmospheres of a cool morning. Listen closely, because the insect chirp isn't the only early rising sound that appears in this nine minute clocker. Flames follows suit, but the tempo quickens in lieu of the more relaxed feeling the previous track presents. As each of the tracks tend to offer a bit of hint to the their inspiration, Night Train chugs along with aggressive chords and tinkered percussion. As the EP closes, listeners are left with a calming, morning-time song reminiscent of the release's opener. Valen, a well-known nomen to Babylon 5 fans, rounds out Heart and Mind with a soundtrack suitable for any waking sun.

It's very rare that a new label is able to break through and create something memorable on its first impression. With so much music emulating past trends combined with new sounds, it's very easy to miss quality releases every now and then. When I received the promo for the new Proper Trax, a start-up label based out of Knoxville, TN, I wasn't sure what to expect. Having connected with Will Azada a year ago and keeping constant communication since, I was already well aware of his influences and interests through his one-offs he threw at local venue, Headroom.

The A-side of Split Personalities features two tracks reminiscent of Detroit techno under Will Azada's own name. Slow Jack features anthem chords and a brooding vocal, making this a perfect track for peak hour atmospheres. A2 moves into deeper waters, showing that Will can keep the rhythmic pace while establishing a calming mood for listeners. Side B opens with the track Bake Sale under Will's moniker The Funnel. Focus in sounds is immediately shifted to warehouse-era techno, filled with dark percussion and haunting bass. At this point in the record, it's very clear why Will chose Split Personalities as the name for this release. Closing out the release is a collaboration of Alex Michalski with Lee Crowe, a chilled-out tune with the famous 303 sound. While many acid tracks can be doldrums of their meaning, this one captures the pure essence in its very intended form.

DEMF Warmup: Ben Klock + Marcel Dettmann

Bringing their signature Berghain sound to the festival this year, Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann ran into a little bit of some misfortune last year surrounding the event. Set to play the Centre Street Social, Dettmann had to cancel his trip because of visa issues. Ben made it into the United States to play the afterparty, but the event never reached its full potential due to a shutdown.

This year, the two label and resident mates bring the Ostgut Ton atmosphere to the Torino Stage, front and center.

Spontan Musik presents its 20^th release as the Horst EP, a collection of music from label owner Tobias Lorsbach (Keinzweiter) and production-freund Tilman Schwarz. Frequent readers of this site may recognize the names from a recent Two Circles release, as Tilman teamed up with Keinzweiter's engineering and remixing skills to present us the No Worries EP. Well, they are back. The dynamic production duo from Mainz, Germany comes together once again to bring listeners a four-track venture into quirky melodies and funky baselines. The release works so much better because the two young musicians are familiar with the other's style and approach to music, therefore the remix swapping provides unique experiences in the mind of the alternate producer. The Curious Mr. S is an original track that features a playful lead and thoughtful rhythms while combining spectacular elements of emotion. Tilman adds a nice jazzy guitar tone to the mix, creating a classic disco feel. Tilman's My Valentine original is a choppy tune glazed with sonic chords, jazzy horns and sporadic percussion. The sounds seem familiar, but the direction and story being told are much different than expected. Keinzweiter's rendition brings a more docile house beat into the picture, while stripping down the craziness of the original to create a more structured nod towards the jazz sound. The past few dedicated years of music production from both men are represented nicely here on the Horst EP, and one can only imagine what is to come in the future.

While the release itself is nothing new by any means, Something Records releases 51-degrees Northin digital format by label founder Stephan Laubner (STL). For anyone that has been paying attention to deep electronic music for the past decade, STL is a name you have probably become properly acquainted. For DJs looking to add a bit more depth to their sets, STL releases often come packed with a grip of tools that work in numerous ways, from layering to loop-ready snippets of sound. 51-degrees North features the mysterious percussion and chords of Inner Silence, an amalgamation of lo-fi sounds and sensible production. The packed loops are not relative to the lead track on the EP, but listeners will still find that warm signature sound of Stefan emits from each minute-long track. Paperboy is the only other full-length tune on the release, and its purpose lies somewhere between the live tool mindset and a standalone song. The grainy feel to 51-degrees North's digital release remains true to its previous vinyl counterpart, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to obtain individual tracks off of the release without having to rip the tracks themselves. Whereas certain digital releases do not seem as fitting, STL proves himself a worthy candidate of releasing digital EPs of past records.

For all you disco junkies, this six track EP from newcomer collective, Rotating Souls, is just what you are looking for in a release. The Pittsburgh-based record label comes on strong with this classic look at past dance floor fillers, and listeners will be pleased to find that this is not the dressed up sound that so many copy cats have attempted. East Liberty Quarters is a trio of musicians that clearly have arrived into their production niche, an idea that many musicians and artists struggle with for years. This is the real deal. The simple elegance and nod to past sounds in tunes like Lucky Charm offer listeners a heady space of complete resonance, something that rarely is felt in modern compositions. Vibrant chords and mellow baselines remain constant throughout each of the tracks, but originality keeps the record feeling diverse and comforting. By the time listeners get to the calming melodies of Lady, the tempo of the record has become a staple feature in the music, offering up a charismatic sense of both the tone and rhythm. While these sounds might be all too familiar to the dance music enthusiast, it's clear that the intended atmosphere is achieved. The rest of the release carries on in similar fashion, yet each track is a refreshing solo piece on their own. Journey is the EP closer, and could not be more fitting. The shuffling percussion adds a bit of mystery to the mood it conveys; a real late-night burner, if you will. Careful not to misplace your copy of East Liberty Quarters, as you just might mistake the record for another time period of excellence!

[review] Liminals - The Dendrites EP (Technogenic)

Collecting and selecting techno music has become sort of a routine, whereas you spend X amount of time searching through tracks of people you already know, listening to sounds you've already heard, and whittling down a long list of music that can all sound the same. What keeps digging still interesting in 2011 is finding new artists and labels that will fit your own personal ethos, and Swedish-based Technogenic has done just that. Two-piece outfit Liminals, located in Uppsala, bring this nice dancefloor-ready release to the virgin label with help from the Donk Boys. The title track's quick rhythm and paired chords certainly elude to a time period before it, and not in that sad, sort of plagiarist type of way. The Dendrites is a warm and patient, yet strong and charging type of track, giving it quite a bit of originality in that sense alone. Its infectious groove sticks around long after the music stops, and this seems to be an ideal that is often missed with techno coming out today. The B-side of the record carries the slow-moving Donk Boys remix of The Dendrites first, giving a nice and relaxing feel to the Swedish duo's original intentions. As it sits as the second piece of the EP, The Dendrites remix works in a bit of a different mood from the other, more progressive tunes. While trying to skip the “saving the best for last” spiel, Capillary Blues keeps that same uptempo feel of the other Liminals' original track, but its the bolder percussion and haunting melodies that really put this one into another playing field. Its overall tone and demeanor gives it reason enough to store this record in my late-night bag every time, so its safe to say that this release has earned its keep.

Creeping up on its fifth anniversary, Brescia, Italy-based Rebirth Records brings two stunning releases to both digital and vinyl formats, born from Rennie Foster's Blood Sugar album. Available from Juno, the Blood Sugar Remix EP features assistance from Floppy Don (2/3 of Cobblestone Jazz), Samuel L Session, Alain Ho, Jay Shepheard, and vocals from the late Aaron-Carl. Two renditions of Connect Like Four appear, offering different variations of the original. Danuel Tate and Tyger Dhula of Cobblestone Jazz come together for a nice classic sound, blending sporadic chords and rolling percussion. Samuel L Session assumes the duties for the second remix, and the signature sound shows itself right away. Savior gets new treatment from Alain Ho, providing a nice driving groove that dances smoothly around the Detroit native's memorable voice. Afrocentrik rounds out the four-track vinyl EP, with Jay Shepheard offering one of two reworked versions he has crafted, identified as the Bass Mix.

While the personal preferences of this site stand firmly behind labels who are still active in vinyl manufacturing and distribution, there is something about the remaining digital tracks that hits real close to home. The four tracks available on wax appear in digital format as well, but six more Blood Sugar album remixes accompany them. While many producers have spent a lifetime trying to emulate what they have heard in house and techno music of Detroit and Chicago past, Iron Curtis has always presented a refreshingly original take on the sound. His remix of Afrocentrik, here, is nothing short of spectacular. Jay Shepheard presents his second remix of Afrocentrik, a deeper, more sonic groove that fits the name Chord Mix very accurately. The Iron Curtis rework and Jay Shepheard digital exclusive seem to be the two standout tracks of the release, but that doesn't mean the fun stops here. Belgian duo The Youngsters touch upon Foster's “Your Eyes” ever so gently, melding patient tones with familiar rhythms. Paul Mac, Uner, Deep & Suga, Dollar Mambo, and Crowdpleasers split up duties for handling the remaining three tracks on the digital release, but at this point in the review, my mind can only think about the Iron Curtis remix.

This year has already seen a multitude of great releases from the usual suspects, and classic techniques and fresh ideas seem to be coming together again. A personal favorite, NRK's Nick Harris comes to Spanish-based Climatic Records with an outstanding release. Nick provides two bold originals, while label regulars lend a hand in crafting two respective remixes. As with the majority of the British producer's releases, he skates on the fine line that is house and techno, matching dubbed out chords, mechanic percussion, and soothing atmospheres. A deepness permeates throughout both originals, blending rhythms with calming melodies. The self-titled track and paired remix from Jairo Catelo and Aphro seem to play off each other nicely, but the remix does not stray from the original's theme as much as it could. However, Paradise Kissed and its remix brethren offer much more distinguishable differences, and two completely separate emotions come from the same idea. The driving force behind the original stays light, keeping a deep and steady tone throughout the track. Javi Murdock, Jose De Divina, and Cristian Viviano take things a bit darker and more spaced out, providing a moodier rendition of Nick's creation.

In the end, both of the original tracks on Counting Clouds seem to stand apart the most. Not for nothing, the remixers provide wonderful support in rounding out a quality release.

Pittsburgh-based Bleepsequence brings us its 12th release in little over a year of being founded. Kevin Lind runs the label, and selecting artists that variably exist while fulfilling a common theme has been a vital factor in keeping the label refreshing. Wasserfall and the Automatic Message deliver a four-track release with dub chords that explore differing rhythms and environments. The opening sequence is especially nice, as audible chalkiness cuts through the track at a smooth and relaxing pace. The remaining tracks of My Father the Hunter ride on a standard techno rhythm platform, breathing comfortably in a controlled structure.

Fans of jungle of yesteryear remember Rupert Parkes' Photek moniker for breaking new barriers with broken-beat music in the 90s. But his sound progression didn't stop with quick tempo, UK music. Photek eventually showed his softer side, with Detroit- and Chicago-inspired house music, surprising many all over the world, and gaining new ground in new territories. Berlin-based Oliver Deutschmann has made quite an impression on the house music scene over the last ten years. As he is busy running both Vidab and FNow he joins the young Jackoff Records imprint, partnering 2 original tracks with a Patrice Scott remix. A digital release came out yesterday, matched with a bonus edit of Do It the Classic Way Honey. Vinyl mavens can rejoice, as the two standout tracks of this release are pressed, and available next week from Juno. Waterfalls Are Good features a deep mood as it develops, reminiscent of Chicago. Matched with dubbed out pads and a soulful progression, it was only natural that Detroit native, Patrice Scott, assume the duties for a remix. Patrice expands on the original's idea, delivering an exhilarating track ready for the dance floor. Acid chords lead the way, but Patrice manages to keep the calm pace throughout the track. With growling bass and classic 808 percussion tones, Do It the Classic Way Honey is about as good as the track infers. The track could easily act as an intermediary routine, but shining on its own is not its strongest suit.

Out tomorrow, Fear of Flying Records brings us this three track EP from a variety of talented artists. The Midlands-based label has been responsible for original EP releases from the likes of BLM, Jozif, Leif, and Nick Lawson, while Schatrack's classic “Champagne Dancer” was recently revisisted with a pairing remix from Justin Drake. Existing as a vinyl and digital label, Fear of Flying's roster reads like a who's who in the modern house music community. The music really speaks for itself, though, as it is quite the relief in a sound otherwise in peril.

Side A of Garage is Back includes a Matthew Styles remix of the title track, written and originally composed by BLM. This BLM joint was first seen on FOF in May of 2010, and the remix really expands on the original idea and drive. A typical tech/house-type percussion builds the track, while the vocals and chords lend a hand in guiding this song on the correct path.

Side B, Track 1 features a BLM remix of a Kevin Griffiths/Justin Drake collaboration, titled The Devil's Eyes. The original recently saw consumer release earlier this month on FOF, and while it left a bit to be desired, both as a listener and as a DJ, the remix pulls through in a wonderful way. The BLM-modified rendition blurs the lines of synthesis and emotion, creating a type of mood that will surely be well received in a variety of areas. BLM nods towards past sounds in house and techno, but always twists the music in a way that creates a nice, refreshing tone.

Side B, Track 2 is the vocal of Garage is Back.

Topper and Etnitude is the moniker of Turin-born Matteo Taberna. Currently based in Berlin, Matteo is at the center of the thriving techno scene that has consumed so many of Germany's youth. First exposing his sound to listeners through various net releases, the Topper name eventually reached forefront labels, such as Igloo Rec, Goodvibe, Noisy Glance, and Woods n Bass. New Hope is Matteo's first venture with Berlin label, Sleep is Commercial, fitting right in with the whole idea behind this group. Surprisingly, the title track of the release is not the most memorable. Driving basslines and mysterious pads keep for an interesting sound, but a repetitive vocal stab seems to ruin the creativity the track otherwise possessed. Evil Story adds a punchier groove to the album, with the recognizable percussive behavior that defines a Topper track. A haunting vocal makes its way into the breakdown of the song, building a level of intensity and certainly creating a more exciting dance floor. Tehei focuses on the tight percussion and bass partnership found in many of the young producer's tracks, yet seems to fade into the background. Rounding out this four-track release, Pushing Logarhythms is the choice tune for any occasion, as the laid-back chords guide the release into a comfortable halt. This tune seems to be the main proponent of the release, whereas all others seem to be the clear supporters. If we dare to enter a world of hypothetical rationale in order to ask, “what if this EP saw a pressing”, then “Pushing Logarhythms would be the reason to buy” is the answer. While half of this release seemed to be more of the same from Topper and Etnitude, New Hope still sits firmly as a well-rounded company of music.

RBMA: Kyle Hall live @ Movement (Torino)

Very seldom do new djs come up so quickly and are level-headed with their own music. Detroit's Kyle Hall is a recent graduate of the Detroit School For Fine and Performing Arts, but his young age seems hidden in his musical productions and energetic DJ sets. With releases on underground label favorites, FXHE and Hyperdub, Kyle currently runs his own label, Wild Oats. Is his production techno? Is it dubstep? Some of his music rides on the questionable line between the two sounds; Kyle uses broken rhythms as often as he does a uniform, 4x4 beat. While incorporating an eclectic blend of tracks from all eras of dance music, Kyle injects a refreshing look into what it means to be a Detroit DJ.

2010 was another pivotal year for Kyle, as he played both Movement Festivals and Decibel Festival in Seattle. Red Bull Music Academy presents one hour of his Movement Torino set.

[review] Sven Laux - Homesickness or Nostalgia (Microcosm)

Homesickness or Nostalgia might be Berlin-based Sven Laux's first full-length album, but with steady releases on Archipel, Multi-Vitamins, spontanMusik, Tropic, and Leporelo labels, to name a few, Sven has already introduced listeners to his personal world of music. Upon first listening, it is clear to tell that he takes great influence from techno and house music from past and present. However, Sven's chiseled and refined sound remains refreshingly tight throughout the course of its productions. The Berliner's music contains uniform rhythms to keep DJs interested in including his music in their sets, but the beginning and end of the tracks aren't necessarily tailored like most dance music tracks. Mashing sonic elements with bits and fragments of digitally-imposed drums, Sven has created something unique that he can most certainly call his own. Homesickness or Nostalgia excites the listener from the very first track onward. His music here creates a sort of controlled environment of mystification, giving the impression of sporadic tones while maintaining a calm mood. Vibrant chords remain distant in tracks such as Loan Translation, paving way for stabbing drum patterns and quirky noises. Sven ties in sounds from various field recordings on tracks like Old Miller's Favourite Burgers, adding to the realness that already penetrates the album. Few are able to achieve a full album of creativity freedom like Sven, and the thoughtful placement of sounds is not overlooked. With this full-length set to release on New York-based Microcosm, the Sven Laux sound is becoming more and more apparent.

Quickly gaining attention and accolades from fellow deep house peers, Patrice continued with this new-found momentum. He joined the Aesthetic Audio team in 2007 with his instant-classic, Visions of Mantada.
Being a native of the Motor City, Patrice easily fits the Detroit ethos with his original take on both production and DJing.

Using years of Detroit influence in his own music, Luke has created a signature sound that draws from deep moods and vibrating rhythms. RBMA Trainwreck Mix: Shackleton

Red Bull Music Academy is back with their Trainwreck Mix Series, and this time they bring the spotlight to one of Skull Disco's founders: Shackleton. A 2004 release on the radically obscure Mordant Music saw Sam quickly finding a home in sound. With a deep and mysterious direction in both his production and mixes, Shackleton gained momentum with underground garage scenes around 2005 with his first SD release. Working with artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Shackleton always remained at the forefront of the broken beat scene by bridging the gap in both sounds and partnerships. Unfortunately, Skull Disco disbanded as a label in 2008, but the spirit and allure that defined a Shackleton track continued to be a driving force in the music. Like Ricardo and Omar S, Shackleton recently brought his own productions to the Fabric collection. This Trainwreck Mix plays into the same type of theme, where he turns the psychedelic and strange, standalone tracks into a cleverly laid out session.

If you’ve read anything about America’s dance music scene in the last five years, The Bunker, New York’s vaunted club night, has probably received repeated mentions. Founded in 2003 as “an ongoing night of musical exploration,” the events grew into the most reliable parties in the state, if not the country. The Bunker’s focus on quality sounds (both in their bookings and in the massive PAs they use) instead of flashy gimmicks (don’t expect bottle service) has earned the respect of the world-renowned artists who insist on playing their parties and the audiences for whom the events are like church services. Organized by Bryan Kasenic, the proprietor of Beyond Booking who is known as Spinoza when behind the decks, the nights also feature residents Derek Plaslaiko and Eric Cloutier. Cloutier has been making waves outside of The Bunker as well, having helmed two mixes for mnmlssgs and played Japan’s well loved Labyrinth Festival. Venedikt Reyf creates a sort of western vibe in his deep techno track "Hey There Killer", which appears with 5 other tunes from respectable artists. It's not that Reyf's moody, thematic track is the best tune of the release, because all have their place and positioning, but Venedikt has separated himself fully from his Südmilch moniker and embraces 2010 with mysterious production techniques.

Featuring an original and remix from Detroit native Patrice Scott, The Waiting Game proved to be a favorite among radio jockeys and club enthusiasts alike. The original has a patient depth and exuberant bass, while the P.Scott remix charges into space. One can't help but fall in love with the tones used in both of these tunes.

When sheer talent continues to emerge from Tel Aviv, it is clear that much inspiration derives from its location.

Oracy meets with Mojuba once again, providing two tracks with completely different intentions. While other reviews might have badgered on about the differences and subtleties in track diversity, these two tracks really have nothing in common other their origin. Oracy sets out on an acidic tip for Side A, while Side B settles into a nice funk, as its title suggests.

Divided is a light, loungey tune with accompanying trumpet by Thomas Gaertner and vocals by Suzi Q. Smith. The flip-side is a deep journey into a new form of jazz, with saxophonist Jonas Loellmann keeping the slow tempo on course.

While we have arrived here at the number one spot, and to those of you who are still here, this spot was not easily earned. While a number one release for the year is certainly a feat, all other releases and compilations before it do not go unnoticed or undeserved. Brendon Møller's dub moniker, Echologist, brings together Terence Fixmer and Anton Zap for three outstanding looks at one original idea. Terence takes the original idea a bit farther, with dotting chords and quick percussion. Anton slows it all down, creating his own sense of space within pre-existing sound. When I wrote the review for this release when it was just emerging, I already knew that this was going to be the one.

doubtingthomas - promo mix for winter 2010

With two full releases on Two Circles and a discography of wonderful releases, London-based, French producer doubtingthomas has certainly found his own place in sound. More recently, dt has joined the Igloo-Rec family with a four-track release and several remix joints, including two for Mark Chambers on Snubb Records. With genre tags 'deep house' and 'minimal techno' increasing in both notoriety as well as repetitiveness today, Aurelien/dt has managed to wedge himself between the two and create a harmonious space all to himself. Syncopated rhythms and soft chords find their way to the helm of each track, yet each one manages to separate itself from the rest just enough to maintain originality. A sort of dark, jazzy atmosphere rises from within his music, so what kind of concoction would a studio mix bring upon? I'm glad you asked, because dt has created this wonderful, moody mix for any occasion.

Label of the Year: Unoiki

When taking on something as vast as picking a favorite label of the year, one has to not only consider content and artist roster, but also the label as a whole and how it is unified as one. With this simple yet specific idea in mind, no other label project defines this idea as does the Unoiki collective. With the original notion being organized by native Berliner, Dr. Nojoke, the whole idea behind the Unoiki project unfolded when artists of all mediums came together for a single purpose: to redefine the way the listener perceives music and distribution.

At first glance, Unoiki's Calendar Album is similar to a netlabel, with free monthly releases of a new song by a new musician. The collective aims to bring together all mediums of art under one music project, and the effort is not lost. With the same passion that tags along with a free music label, the collective presents a visual snippet of each release that compliments the mood of each artist rather well. Unlike most netlabels, each monthly song is part of the tangible calendar album that is available with beautifully designed artwork in two sensible packages. The Limited Edition calendar album set comes with unique, handmade packaging and includes both a CD and the ability to download the album in multiple file formats.

A Deluxe Box set is also available, which features full artwork for each song, one original hand drawing by label artist Jonathan Mangelinchx, and special black packaging unique to the box set. While both CD packages contain the same premise for music enjoyment, they are both still just a portion of how Unoiki has fashioned its platform.

In April of this year, Unoiki embarked on its second compilation project. The UNdefinition compilation was presented with the same ideas of presentation as the Calendar Album, giving talented electronic musicians an opportunity to create a combined piece of timeless art. Musicians from all over the world submitted their unique takes on electronic music, both maintaining individual freedom and defining unity.

Unoiki's involvement with other mediums of creation seems to be the most intriguing aspect of the young label, tough. When browsing through the label's website, a communal sense of artistic direction seems to resonate boldly. Through existing projects and future collaboration endeavors, Unoiki reaches out to the common person who realizes the creative potential that lies within his or her own mind. The Silence Project calls to the individual interested to submit an idea in any form that relates to the idea of "silence", opening an almost endless realm of possibilities. Another featured idea centers around a strictly improvisational audio/visual team, comprised of Unoiki members Dr Nojoke and J-Lab, as well as Servando Barreiro. Their first performance took place at the 2009 netaudio showcase, whereas audio was compiled from field recordings and visuals were born from stills along the route of the former Berlin Wall. While such a political involvement in a musical setting is certainly no easy feat to accomplish, the TRIoon collective gives light to the nature of this idea.

The Calendar Album saw a full exhibition for its release, which featured the prominent display of each track's artwork. An installation of works is still being shown at the notated address in Berlin, something not seen very often with music label releases. This type of artistic involvement from all angles, from music to influenced structures, is gives new light and meaning to the word "label".

With this involvement of multiple artforms inside a music label, it was no doubt that Unoiki has captured my interest since its inception.

After holding down a number of top quality residencies in NYC over the last decade, Plaslaiko has recently set out to conquer Berlin and call it his home.

Red Bull Music Academy: Robert Hood

Red Bull Music Academy's ironically named Train Wreck Mix has given us some truly fantastic mix sets from the world's best djs over the past few years. While many arguments can be made among the sunken eye and techno elite crowd, there is no dispute here that Detroit-born Robert Hood is the modern innovator of minimal techno.

Growing up with an immediate family closely tied to the Motown movement, Robert learned the art of sound at an early age. But Hood's sound was different than other techno producers in the Michigan area. Taking what he heard from those around him and transforming that established music into his own, he birthed a new movement for techno enthusiasts. It wasn't long until Robert hooked up with other local favorites Jeff Mills and Mike (Agent X) Clark, forming the now legendary Underground Resistance brand and label. Throughout the 90s and into the new millennium, Robert Hood has remained one of the most influential DJs and producers in his respective field. Recorded live at Elevate Festival earlier this year, this RBMA podcast features everything weird and organic that Hood's music has developed to over the years.
