Stuff Your Face Detroit! #Movement2011

Stuff Your Face #Movement2011

Lafayette Coney Island
118 W Lafayette Blvd
Detroit, MI 48266

Forget any chili dog or Coney Island-style hot dog you've ever eaten. It's garbage. It may have tasted good to you when you were shoving PBR tallboys down your neck, but your stomach hated you an hour later. While people think that the name and style of Coney Island dogs comes from New York City, it doesn't. It's a Michigan-based concoction, and remains to be a pure Midwest treat to those who can accurately build one. When the Coney Island hot dog was first introduced in the early part of the 1900s, Detroit was one of the first regions to feature the delectable meal. Enter Lafayette Coney Island. While this classic Greek-owned restaurant is attached to its family competitor, American Coney Island, there is no doubt that Lafayette Coney is the true victor in the race for the best chili dog.

Evie's Tamales
3456 Bagley St
Detroit, MI 48209

Often imitated but never undersold, Evie's Tamales is a quaint restaurant in Mexicantown that is famous for, you guessed it, tamales. But that isn't the only specialty on the menu. In fact, just about every item on Evie's menu is sure to please the senses. Probably the most perfect part about this family-owned business is the fact that they open at 8 in the morning. I know all of you rave enthusiasts will just be waking up around then, or something to that effect. End your day, er...start your morning right with authentic Mexican food.

Slow's BBQ
2138 Michigan Avenue
Detroit, MI 48216

Ok, now just what in the fuck is a Midwest BBQ joint doing in this list? Well, you should never underestimate the attention to detail that local Detroiters put into their food, no matter what type of ingredients or cultural dish they may be serving. Unlike the previous two entries, Slow's opened recently (2005) and has become a critically-acclaimed hotspot since. This year Slow's will be featuring a To-Go cart at the festival, so be sure to stop by and try it for yourself.

Mudgie's Deli
1300 Porter Street
Detroit, MI 48226

Building a sandwich for customers can either make or break your establishment. Because a sandwich only offers so much room for the basic ingredients, it has fast become the deciding factor in whether or not your restaurant cuts it (the “it” being the bread, of course!). The personal experience doesn't stop at the sandwich at Mudgie's, as the staff greets and engages every customer as if they are part of the family. If you have any questions about any of the Memorial Day Weekend parties, Mudgie's is the best place to grab a bite and inquire within.

DEMF Warmup: Ben Klock + Marcel Dettmann

Bringing their signature Berghain sound to the festival this year, Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann ran into a little bit of some misfortune last year surrounding the event. Set to play the Centre Street Social, Dettmann had to cancel his trip because of visa issues. Ben made it into the United States to play the afterparty, but the event never reached its full potential due to a shutdown.

This year, the two label and resident mates bring the Ostgut Ton atmosphere to the Torino Stage, front and center.

(DTW) 5/28/11: Deep Detroit w/Kai Alce + Omar S

Kai Alce was born and raised on Detroit house music, but for the last decade and a half he has been an Atlanta resident and supporter. His label NDATL has featured several critically acclaimed releases recently, but the Music Institute series might be one of the most sought after. Part 1 and Part 2 sold out almost immediately, making it both a collectable item and a record every DJ wants.

This Saturday, Kai will play on Broadway with label mate and FXHE Records owner Omar S. Brett Dancer supports, as well.

Date / Saturday, 28 May 2011
Time / 10pm
Venue / 1515 Broadway, Detroit
Cost / $10

iRewind! Essential Mix - Pete Tong + Mike Pickering - Factory and Hacienda Special

Unlike many of the Essential Mixes of the last decade, this 2007 duet became an instant classic not only for its tracklisting, but for the message it conveyed. Factory Records frontman and Hacienda overseer, Tony Wilson is undoubtedly one of the most influential men in UK electronic and indie music. Pete Tong and Mike Pickering come together to celebrate the life of a great man, honoring him through timeless music.

Yes, Essential Mixes don't come this memorable very often anymore. But then again, men like Tony Wilson are not exactly dime-a-dozen. Enjoy this special mix for an outstanding human being.

He's not at the festival this year, but techno godfather Juan Atkins can be found showcasing a lifetime of sounds at Taste Pizzabar with Derrick May and Eddie Fowlkes on Sunday Night.

DEMF Warmup: Scuba - RA Podcast

The UK-born, Berlin-based Hotflush label founder has had quite a hotstreak of musical releases and live shows over the last few years. Paul Rose, aka Scuba/SCB, began releasing dubstep and other experimental broken beat tracks, but eventually the house-beat sound began appearing in his productions. The dual moniker transitioning has reared its head into live sets, creating some spectacular moments of sound variety.

He is set to play the Red Bull stage at Movement this year.

DEMF Warmup: Reference

Luke Hess and Brian Kage have been quite busy for the last few years, and their Reference moniker is only part of the musical magic. While the two run the Beretta label together, Reference has also seen a recent release on Planet E, as depicted in the second song ("Best Day in Detroit") of the video below. The first track is a remix by Marko Fürstenberg for the Reference VS EP.

Catch Reference on Monday at the Festival.

DEMF Warmup: Mike Servito - Bunker Podcast

Ghostly's Mike Servito may live in New York City, but his influence and appreciation stretches much farther than the Big Apple. Taking cues from Detroit techno emerging in the early 90s, Mike has built a steady name over the past 15 years.

DEMF Warmup: Soultek aka Echospace - Talking Shopcast

Purveyor of deep, resonating atmospheres, Stephen Hitchell makes up one half of the Detroit duo/label force, Echospace. The dub techno crew brings their flavorful sounds to the Festival this year, joining the ranks of like-minded locals and guests.

DEMF Warmup: Carl Craig + DJ Al Ester Planet E 20 Mix

One of the most influential men in the shaping of the Detroit festival, and arguably the face of techno around the world, Carl Craig comes together with local Motor City house favorite DJ Al Ester for this Planet E 20 Year Mix for Tsugi Magazine. Both gentlemen are playing the festival this year; Al Ester down in the underground stage and Carl Craig is headlining the festival as 69.

DEMF Warmup: Marcel Dettmann TrainWreck RBMA

Slated to play the Centre Street Social afterparty for last year's festival, the German-based DJ unfortunately was not able to make his way into the country due to custom's issues. Never feature, because Marcel and Berghain partner Ben Klock are set to play the Movement Torino tent for this year's festival.

DEMF Warmup: Claude Young Live @ Social Infection

Son of well-known radio personality Claude Young Sr, Junior has set out on an international mission of his own musical accord. The Detroit-born DJ and producer is set to play the festival in a few weeks, and if the below set is any indication of the direction he will move, then we're all in for a real treat.

Essential Mix - Seth Troxler - May 7th, 2011

Always wary of Essential Mix choices, having Seth Troxler as a guest certainly sparked a little bit of interest. The Detroit-born youngster has had quite an impressive past few years, with releases on everything from FXHE and Esperanza to Spectral and Crosstown Rebels. Seth has become the mainstay at notorious underground clubs such as DC-10, Watergate, The Rex, and more, undoubtedly earning himself the number 3 position in Resident Advisor's 2010 DJ Poll.

DEMF Warmup: Aril Brikha Live @ Fuse-In 2005

The time is upon us once again. Detroit's famed electronic music festival is set to take place in Hart Plaza on Memorial Day Weekend to a crowd of thousands. Iranian born, Sweden-based Aril Brikha has a long history with Detroit and the style of techno that continues to inspire all of us. With Deeparture in Time singles and album versions released on Derrick May's Transmat label, it is only appropriate that Aril be welcomed with open arms to the Made in Detroit stage for this year's festival. A perfect setting for somebody who has taken the Detroit sound and developed his own outlook on the music.

(review) Keinzweiter + Tilman - Horst EP [Spontan Musik]

Artists: Keinzweiter & Tilman
Release: Horst EP
Label: Spontan Musik
Release: 4|21|11

Spontan Musik presents its 20th release as the Horst EP, a collection of music from label owner Tobias Lorsbach (Keinzweiter) and production-freund Tilman Schwarz. Frequent readers of this site may recognize the names from a recent Two Circles release, as Tilman teamed up with Keinzweiter's engineering and remixing skills to present us the No Worries EP. Well, they are back. The dynamic production duo from Mainz, Germany comes together once again to bring listeners a four-track venture into quirky melodies and funky baselines. The release works so much better because the two young musicians are familiar with the other's style and approach to music, therefore the remix swapping provides unique experiences in the mind of the alternate producer. The Curious Mr. S is an original track that features a playful lead and thoughtful rhythms while combining spectacular elements of emotion. Tilman adds a nice jazzy guitar tone to the mix, creating a classic disco feel. Tilman's My Valentine original is a choppy tune glazed with sonic chords, jazzy horns and sporadic percussion. The sounds seem familiar, but the direction and story being told are much different than expected. Keinzweiter's rendition brings a more docile house beat into the picture, while stripping down the craziness of the original to create a more structured nod towards the jazz sound. The past few dedicated years of music production from both men are represented nicely here on the Horst EP, and one can only imagine what is to come in the future.
