Migrashun Podcast: Raw Headroom

Migrashun Presents: Raw Hedroom – Seed 014 Promo Mix

Migrashun is proud to release SEED 014. Raw Hedroom is the musical alias of Gareth Williams. Having immersed himself in electronic music and culture for more than ten years, Gareth has worn several hats in the electronic music industry. Right now, he produces techno for Cologne's Trapez label, builds custom performance systems for Richie Hawtin's Plastikman Live tour and steers the ship at Line - this man-machine has a thirst for challenges and won't let something as mundane as time hold him back.

Artistically, Gareth is fascinated by the interface between music art and technology. In fact, he sees no real distinction. Music drives technology, which in turn drives the music itself. Being part of a team building their own technology really allows him to explore this intersection closer than most. The resulting sound is innovative, but always in touch with the dance floor. His preferred process of jamming live during the production process captures the human error, groove and happy accidents which are all too often missing from much of today's electronic music. We that you enjoy Gareth’s seamless addition to the SEED podcast series.

RA Podcast 222: Bruno Pronsato

Steven Ford shows off his groovy minimalist style with a special live set for the RA podcast.

The journey from speed metal drummer to minimal techno producer isn't exactly a common one, but it's exactly the music path that a certain Steven Ford has forged over the past 20 years. After leaving his Voice Of Reason bandmates back in Texas and making a move out west to Seattle, Ford became increasingly interested in computer-based music and electronic minimalism, steadily learning the tools that have made him such an accomplished producer.

His early years in the electronic music scene saw him split his output between two different monikers. While his now defunct Bobby Karate pseudonym explored Ford's more abstract side, his more dance floor-focused work came out under the Bruno Pronsato name, and was promptly picked up by respected labels as Musique Risquee, Philpot and Orac. A move to Berlin opened up yet more opportunities for Ford, leading to collaborations with both Sammy Dee and Daze Maxim—the former as Half Hawaii and the latter as The Others—and a more suitable hub to take his live show around Europe and beyond.

The last couple of years have seen Ford start up his thesongsays record label, which debuted with his deftly executed 39-minute Nico-sampling composition, "The Make Up The Break Up." RA's Peter Chambers saw fit to give both that 12-inch and also his sophomore album, Why Can't We Be Like Us, rare perfect scores upon their release, and with a new album on the way, fans won't have to wait too long to hear more of Ford's liquid percussion and mindbending sound design.

[preview] Klamauk 003 - V/A

The Mainz based vinyl outfit, Klamauk, is back with their 3rd release, another perfectly matched Various Artist lineup. If you aren't familiar with Klamauk 001 and 002, they come with hand painted original artwork on the sleeve. 003 is no exception, and should be available in September of 2010.

A1: frivolous – candle-light ave

Track 1 starts with a light, stabby disco-esque house track by Frivolous. With spacey chords and a string section to keep the dancefloor alive, the rhythm is very much alive in this track.

Frivolous - Candle-Light Ave by klamauk

A2: grifin – up class

Track 2 is a more toned and rigged house look, with a classic rhythm section underneath wonky horns and an inaudible (to this American) French voice-over. Towards the middle of the track, a soft lead comes in to give the listener a lighter feel to the music.

Grifin - Up Class by klamauk

B1: tilman – oskar

Track 3 is another great tune from Klamauk head, Tilman. With a calm rhythm section and wacky sounds, it's undeniable that this has the Mainz producer's signature sound engraved. A nice rolling, shaped synth leads the charge through this track and finishes through the end.

Tilman - Oskar by klamauk

B2: leif – alphabetti

The last track on the release is a deeper venture, keeping the same mood as all the tracks before it, though. With more bleepy goodness that keeps the Klamauk label fresh and interesting, Leif brings with him a tight minimal groove filled with lush drum beats and soft chords.

Leif - Alphabetti by klamauk

insectorama presents the new ep from the US/Canadian duo hemiptera.
this sound is not from this world.this is sound sculpture with minimal techno dance rhythms in a very dark atmosphere construct.

"...as Hemiptera, Jennifer Clemente and Yanni Ehm incorporate thousands of microscopic sounds into expansive, teeming environments. Gradually modulating mid-range beats shape a modest bed for mutated wood-block pops, spectral synthesizer wisps and lingering high-end pings.

Resident Advisor 221: Shed

The Hard Wax and Ostgut Ton man lays down an energetic, hour-long mix for this week's RA podcast.

As far as contemporary Berlin-based house and techno producers go, you don't get much better than René Pawlowitz. When he's not spending his time behind the counter at the city's legendary Hard Wax record store, he's busy conjuring up all manner of material in his studio, taking inspiration from classic Detroit and Berlin techno while infusing elements of hardcore, breakbeat, dubstep and ambient along the way. Although the majority of his output is released under the Shed banner, Pawlowitz has diversified his sound with a number of different pseudonyms. His white label offerings as Wax and EQD have become essential selections for fans of rugged Teutonic techno, while he's also turned his hand to 140bpm bass music with his work as The Panamax Project.

Although René has garnered a reputation for his prolific and consistent approach club-oriented 12-inch singles, he's also proved his mettle when it comes to creating larger bodies of work. His debut album came in at the #1 spot in our top albums of 2008, with RA's Will Lynch championing its "lustrous aesthetic, oblique rhythms and coherent diversity," so seeing as his sophomore full-length—entitled The Traveller—is due to hit the shops later this month, so we thought that it'd be the ideal time to let Pawlowitz demonstrate his idiosyncratic vision of how techno should be.

[review] SCHATRAX - Champagne Dancer EP (Fear of Flying)

Side 1:
Champagne Dancer (2010 edit)

Side 2:
Champagne Dancer (original)

Champagne Dancer (Justin Drake remix)

SCHATRAX brings us this wonderful, summertime release. With a 2010 edit and original looming around the same sounds and atmosphere, the Justin Drake remix is the star of this release. Don't get me wrong, the two Schatrax productions are both lovely tracks. The original features boisterous claps and emphatic yet deep chords. With less attention on the claps, but with the same mood and direction as the original, the 2010 edit sets out to be a great track for bringing those early evening sets into the realm of mid-night. Keeping the same premise, Justin Drake brings Champagne Dancer fully into the night, yet remains on the same plane of attitude. Full of energy, Justin reworks the bass groove and finds new direction in chords, making this remix a completely original take on Schatrax' already moody record.

[Archive] Keinzweiter - From Remix To Mainz

Today is a warm, overcast day here in Atlanta, and no better time than to revisit a recent classic of ours than with Keinzweiter's "From * to Mainz" remix compilation. Released in late May of 2008, the lineup of remixers and sounds created from that one field-recording based track of "From Detroit to Mainz" still are very impressive for the Spontan-Musik label. From glitchy, lo-fi late night dancefloor rhythms of the Signal Deluxe/Big Bully remix to the ambient, space explorations of the Superlauncher (another Tobias moniker) rework, this release is a prime example of how creative musicians can come together and add their own touch to an already exemplary track.

The Munich based producer/dj brings us yet another mix, this time for the Vakant label podcast series. We might be a bit biased, but Dario always seems to perfectly craft his mixes, which are individualistic ventures every time. We hear he's been quite busy in the studio this year as well, with several public and mysterious releases alike that further his ideas of soundscape.

Clear Notice: Enter Calico V/A

With Various Artist releases marking the first release, it can be sometimes difficult for the label to establish itself within sound. Clear Notice has comprised a nice cast for their debut compilation, with trippy, abstract drum patterns to melodic twists in dubbed out chords. David McSherry, from Fila Brazillia, starts off the release with a mysterious take on instrumental hip hop, with emphatic leads and confident arrangement. Samarah and alka further the compilation on a weird, dark look into broken drum patterns and haunting synths. Next comes a track from Tricil, an Atlanta native who has crafted this sporadic drum ensemble with the assistance of a music video, viewable here. The video comes with the purchase of the release, at the link below. The track Calculus, by Cambridge, MA producer Stretta, is a winding tune that seems to settle nicely into the following track by Cloudchair. Auditory Canvas picks up the rhythm where Stretta's 'Calculus' drifted into the ambiance 'Echoes and Whispers'. Thomas L Raukamp's 'Aout' brings new mystery to the compilation, with droning guitar tones and wonderfully crafted, mechanic drums. Subterminal follows with an ambient feel of light, playful synths and strings, bringing the listener back down to a level of calmness and tranquility. rktic's 'Nordic Walking' emerges from the beatless sounds that precede with dubbed out space. The next track could probably have worked better had it been placed earlier in the release with more music of the same dark and broken nature, but its point is not lost and the sounds still inspire new feeling. Future Primitive's 'Wake Up' is chaotic in form, yet has a tendency to fall back and remain collected at the appropriate moments of the track. Tapage's 'Wounds' is a great ending to the album with enjoyable, slow broken beats. Overall the release works great together, but the individual tracks do a marvelous job on their own. Interesting first release from Clear Notice, and curious to see what they have for the future.

Tonight in Atlanta: Thermal feat Revy at Lava Lounge

Atlanta's monthly underground house and techno night continues

Special Guest: Revy (Bleepsequence - Pittsburgh, PA)

Revy's music is strange. There really is no better way to put it. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest USA before moving to Tokyo, the influence and contrast of nature and technology are made clear in his mesmerizing pieces. His sound is one that is complicated, rapidly revolving between themes which are at times serious, beautiful, strong and others almost comical and ridiculous. Each track encompasses such an emotional gamut that they themselves seem to become intelligent entities.

It's no wonder, really. Kevin Lind began experimenting with sound as a child with whatever he had on hand, mixing and editing his storybook tapes with sound effects. He went from sound to music as a teenager, picking up saxophone and keyboard ahead of the modern era of computer music, where he first combined elements from both his controlled and random sonic palettes.

Like so many prolific artists, the drive to share his ideas took precedent. Kevin headed into the netlabel scene to test some ears, and won his respect. His music now realized, he's started building the profile of his releases, with a vinyl release on Slant, and appearances on digital compilations on From 0-1, SubSensory, and Seta. He's also been giving back to the netlabel community by managing Bleepsequence, a burgeoning platform for experimental media and thought provoking electronic music.

Revy sound's is that of his resourcefulness and drive to experiment. He molds his thoughts out of the world around him, both physically and perceptually. It's the chatter of the mind processing one's day before resolving what it all means. It's simply fantastic.

Resident Advisor 219: Cio D'or

Cologne's queen of hypnotic minimalism lays down a trippy warm-up session on this week's RA podcast.

She may have only found international recognition in the latter half of the past decade, but Cio Dorbandt is a veteran of the electronic music scene. Throughout the '90s, she could often be found spinning records at Munich's Ultraschall club, which became a popular spot for German clubbers during the country's techno revolution, before deciding to hone her vision of an ideal club night with her own Nachtwind parties. At the same time, Dorbandt began to produce under the tutelage of techno stalwart Richard Bartz, and moved to Cologne to be closer to the labels that embraced her emotive and melodic take on the minimal techno sound.

The demise of both Karmarouge and the Zurich-based Motoguzzi imprints left Dorbandt looking for a permanent home to house her work, and in a way she's gone full circle by allying herself with Munich's Prologue label, who issued her Die Faser full-length at the tail end of last year. Its mix of hypnotic but rhythmically driving techno and tripped-out ambience distills many of Dorbandt's electronic passions into one consciously narrative whole, and the same could be said for her RA podcast.
