Bckgrnd Techno Exp: Luke Hess

Born in 1980 and raised in the Detroit area, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement.
His background in mathematics and engineering have given him a scientific approach to the dance floor. His music production has landed him a seat with Beretta Music and FXHE in Detroit, Kontra-Musik in Sweden, Modelisme Records in France, and Echocord in Denmark. His first release on FXHE made it into the top 50 releases of the year in 2007 in Groove Magazine.
In 2010 Luke launched is own interpretation of the Detroit Techno sound on his own vinyl label DeepLabs.
With 10 years of DJ experience, he is regarded as a perfectionist behind the decks, layering records in a very detailed and hypnotic manner.
Luke has notable mixes online and in 2003 recorded a promotional mix CD release for UR/Submerge.
Luke’s continued hard work behind the decks and in the studio combined with his unyielding interest in technology and sound will no doubt stimulate the boundaries of electronic music.

Resident Advisor 213: Fred P

The deep house don from Queens steps up to the plate for this week's RA podcast.

If you've been paying any attention to the new wave of house music producers that have been springing up in and around New York over the last few years, the chances are that you'll already be very familiar with the work of one Fred Peterkin. Releasing both as Fred P and also under his Black Jazz Consortium moniker, Peterkin been responsible for some of the smoothest and most evocative four-to-the-floor tracks to come out of the Big Apple over the past decade, coupling his intense, shuffling percussion with simple but effective melody lines that hit you right where it hurts.

Having witnessed New York's house music legacy firsthand in clubs such as The Red Zone, Sound Factory and Tunnel, Fred has plenty of dance floor experience to draw from, but his own sound is much more introspective than what we've come to expect from the city's house sound. This is none more apparent than on last year's Structure full-length as Black Jazz Consortium, which featured into our Top 20 albums of '09 poll and paved the way for an increasing number of live outings across the Atlantic. These shows, along with a sterling mix for Underground Quality's night at Berlin's Tape, have quickly bolstered his reputation as a force to be reckoned with behind the decks, so we thought we'd give him another chance to showcase his turntable skills on this week's RA podcast.

FACT mix 159: Deetron

FACT mix 159 is a superlative house and techno session from Deetron.

Sam Geiser has been producing and DJing as Deetron since for more than a decade, debuting way back in 1998 with the Insert Direction EP for Axodya. While others have fallen in and out of fashion, Deetron has stayed on top, thanks to his open-minded approach to new music but also his unshakeable grasp of classic dancefloor dynamics – his DJ sets, like his productions, are always generously skippy, melodic and bass-driven, which explains why his high-octane mix CD for Fuse was one of FACT’s top albums of 2008.

Geiser continues to flourish as a producer – his latest 12″, ‘Each Step’, is a collaboration with Seth Troxler on Circus Company – and has recently remixed the likes of DJ Hell and Steve Bug. If you’re new to his work, we suggest beginning with his 2008 release ‘Let’s Get Over It’, notable for the devastating Marcel Dettmann version that accompanied it.

The tracklist for Deetron’s FACT mix speaks for itself: a ton of our favourite current producers are represented, including Patrice Scott, WAX (Shed), Basic Soul Unit, Kink and Surgeon, and there are welcome outings for Dixon’s dancefloor edit of Ame’s neo-kosmische epic ‘Fiori’ and the Motor City Drum Ensemble remix of Caribou.

You can catch Deetron spin at Ministry of Sound next Saturday, 26 June, where he’ll be appearing alongside Joris Voorn and 2000 And One in the main Box room; Will Saul and Motor City Drum Ensemble feature in the Loft. For more information and tickets, click here.

[SS11] Sublime Porte - Sigidinum - Silent Season

A bit late on posting this release (almost one year late), but our love for the Sublime Porte creative outlet is still very much found in this release. Full of dub-tech and deep house sounds, this release is sure to please fans who seek a more warm atmosphere within their music.

Sublime Porte // Istanbul Turkey

Another special release for Silent Season that delves deep into dancefloor dubtech vibes. This release includes some amazing remixes by the SS family members Ohrwert, Electribalt and Segue plus a new friend Havantepe.

The name Sublime Porte is derived from the term "sublime porte" which was used for addressing the divan (court) of the Ottoman Empire. Sublime Porte is the literal French translation of bab-i ali which means lofty gate. This particular term was used in the context of diplomacy by the western states, as their diplomats would be welcomed at "porte".

03. Sava
04. Sigidinum - Havantepe Version

Inferno - FXHE vs UQ

I did this mix about a month ago, right after I did my dub techno mix. Originally, I wanted to only release this mix on a CDR format, and thus far it has gotten great feedback! However, I realize times change and tangible formats of music/mixes aren't what they used to be, and here I am posting this up. FXHE and Underground Quality music strictly in this mix. I feel the grainyness and sound choices of both of these labels work tremendously well with each other, and the artists featured on both are awesome. Music featured in the mix by Omar S, Jus Ed, Anton Zap, Nina Kraviz, Big Strick, M. Pittman. I still have a few copies of the CDR mixes left, so feel free to drop me an email requesting one at info@heatpromo.com. Thanks, and do enjoy!

XLR8R Podcast 142: Kyle Hall

When people talk about The New Detroit, it's a safe bet that 18-year-old producer and DJ Kyle Hall is going to be a major part of the conversation. Born into a musical family, Hall grew up in the same Motor City neighborhood as techno legends like Robert Hood, Kelli Hand, and Anthony "Shake" Shakir, was later mentored by guys like Mike Huckaby, and now sits at the forefront of his hometown's next generation. He's already dropped releases on high-quality labels like FXHE and Hyperdub, and also helms his own imprint, Wild Oats. Not bad for a kid who's not even old enough to drink yet. Fresh off some tour dates in Asia and prior to his latest European jaunt, we pinned Hall down long enough to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. Combining masters of the craft with similarly fresh-faced new artists, the mix makes clear that with folks like Kyle Hall taking the reins, the future of Detroit is in good hands.

Humeka | 0610 | Polar Dissim

Humeka – the mysterious man from France – goes deep into experimentation.

Polar Dissim sounds as labile and disoriented as the world is fragile.

Deeply wounded by economic crises, wars, piracy, pollution, global warming, climate changes, over-population, overfishing and the latest oilspill in the Gulf of Mexico the track seems to seek for a way out of this labyrinth where we are in over one´s head.

In the last part the track accelerates turning into a hopeful mood, but with a big question mark at the end.
