DEMF: Warmup and Afterparty Recommendations

The time is creeping up on us, ever so quietly. Tomorrow night is when events will start to appear, and with all of the choices and different sites telling everyone where the best spots to attend are each night, it can really all be confusing. Rather than boring everyone to tears with Detroit recommendations from us (here in Atlanta), it seems more fitting for us to merely suggest where we will be going this weekend. We will be monitoring this site during the festival, so feel free to leave a comment below if you would like to meet us at any of these events for a better connection. See you there!

5/28: Beretta Music: This is Home

Friday night is the real start of it all. Private club 10 Critics plays host to Detroit label Beretta Music and their label party with Omar S, Big Strick, Reference (Luke Hess + Brian Kage), Arthur Oksan and more. We were told that membership was required for entry to the club, and fortunately the club's membership seems to be free at the moment. $10 at the door seems to be one of the best deals for events on Friday night, and the lineup epitomizes modern Detroit techno and house music.

5/29: Centre Street Social

With a lineup that reads more like a who's who among progressive pioneers in deep and soulful techno amongst a sea of recycled problems more so than just another festival afterparty, Centre Street Social is set out to trump all other events and make this one memorable. With three rooms of tested sound, it's clear that this event is not taking any chances and will surely stand above the rest.

5/30: Resolute presents: Vakant vs Dumb Unit

New York promoter maven Resolute brings us this unique label showcase that has toured the globe relentlessly. Berlin based Vakant and Dumb Unit labels bring some of their top artists to the city for exclusive dj sets. Last year, we brought Munich musician Dario Zenker to Bazzaar here in Atlanta and absolutely fell in love with the sounds that were before us.

Marcellus Pittman - Trainwreck Mix

Unirhythm/FXHE recording artist Marcellus Pittmann brings us another installment in the Trainwreck mix series. Part of the 3 Chairs crew, this mix is solo from the Detroit native.

Theo Parrish - Trainwreck Mix 37

Born in Washington DC and raised in Chicago, Theo's close proximity to Detroit has definitely played a crucial part in his assistance to the festival and the city as a whole.

"Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. It can turn a few hours of selection into essential history; Necessary listening through movement."

DJ Sneak - Live @ Il Muretto

It's no wonder, given the geographical proximity, that Chicago and Detroit have extremely close ties to each other in regards to underground house music. Carlos Sosa has been involved with both cities' house communities for quite some time now, and with a plethora of original releases and dancefloor-ready remixes, he will surely rock this weekend for any crowd.

Kyle Hall on MAH

At just 18 years old, this fresh new Detroit talent has quickly made a name for himself in a city that is quite known for newer, more experimental jazz music. With releases on FXHE and his own Wild Oats label, Kyle's music clearly doesn't follow trends or anyone before him, rather it takes influences from Detroit musicians before him.

Robert Hood: Live at DEMF 2006

Regarded by some as the godfather of minimal techno, Robert's dedication to both Detroit as a city and the festival has been as long and as passionate as his peers. Being one of the founding members of the Underground Resistance label, among others, Robert's take on techno has always been about the soul, and that's what has lead us to this point in time.

Here is Robert's set from the 2006 Festival.

Richie Hawtin - Terrace Afterparty

From across the lake in Windsor came Richie Hawtin, and with him he has brought years of dedication to the city of Detroit and the Festival. No doubt he has helped shape the way people perceive techno in the Motor City and beyond.

Brian Kage - DJ Set - St Petersburg, Russia

Beretta Music represents the current sound of Detroit's promising generation of younger producers and talents than what we know the city has brought us in the past. Since 2002, the label has been releasing vinyl under 2 separate yet connected sub-labels, Beretta Grey and Beretta Red. Brian Kage and Luke Hess (as Reference) and Arthur Oskan will be playing friday night for the Beretta Music: This is Home party.

DEMF warmup: Omar S

Words cannot describe how excited we are for DEMF next weekend. The DEMF Oral History article that was posted to RA certainly has set the mood for the 10th year of the festival, and various videos and mixes of Detroit artists have perpetuated the anticipation. All throughout the week, we will be posting mixes from some of Detroit's finest djs and producers. Tonight, we are showcasing a promotional mix from Alex Omar Smith, or Omar S. Owner and operator of FXHE records, Omar is no stranger to the Detroit sound. The mix comes to us from the year 2005, but evokes the same emotions in present day.

Enjoy. This is a great, deep house set.

A Moment in Vinyl: Episode 1 - Inferno

There have been several different types of mixes featured here over the years; dance, experimental and everything in between. New technologies open new doors for professional musicians and those who strive to be alike. There is still magic in digging through crates at a local record store, carefully selecting musical pieces of wax and relaying those sounds with two turntables and a mixer. A Moment in Vinyl is a series that aims to showcase this wonder. To kick off the series, I thought I would take some of my recent favorites and put together a sound that was really inspiring me. These tracks don't get played out often around town, so feel free to slip off your shoes, sit back and enjoy the relaxing sounds.

Thank you for listening

Planatol is a cross-section of his work from the recent years and is mainly through the loving use of jazz harmonies to take on the clicking and minimal beat scaffolding to come together into a unity of opposites.

Mix for Bassfaced Cloudcast Series

IT's friends over at Bassfaced.com asked me, Matt, to do a mix for their blog a couple weeks ago and this is what I came up with. All drum and bass mix of some of my favorite records. Resident Advisor 205: Fudge Fingas

The Firecracker and Prime Numbers man offers up a late night house session for this week's RA podcast.

When conversation turns to clubbing in Scotland, most would agree that Glasgow all too often has the upper hand over Edinburgh. Nonetheless, when it comes to deep house, the Firecracker collective are doing their utmost to score a few points back for the capital. Gavin Sutherland, AKA Fudge Fingas, has been on board with them since their inception in 2004, with the gorgeous soulful house of his "Gettin' Together" helping to make the label's lavishly packaged debut 10-inch stand out from the crowd upon its release.

Sutherland's earlier productions on the now defunct Pohm Pohm and Hush Hush labels hinted at his keen ear for jazzy melodies and funky organic percussion, but certainly didn't prepare us for the rich and dusky quality of his Firecracker material. He's also proved to be a dab hand in creating more uptempo tracks for Trus'me's Prime Numbers imprint, with recent single About Time managing to flip between laid back robotic boogie and shuffling 3/4 time techno. Sutherland will follow in the footsteps of his Firecracker colleague Linkwood when he releases his debut album on the label later this year. We spoke to Gavin to ask him about the mix, Firecracker and the Scottish house scene in general.

[broque061] Max Cavalerra - Eternity EP

Max Cavalerra - Eternity EP (Broque 061)

One year is gone since Max Cavalerra’s latest release „The Bigger, The Better – EP“ which still resonates well in our ears. Finally, its continuation will see the light of day. The Munich-based Max, whose famous releases already appeared on Karmarouge, Broque as well as Harthouse, demonstrates with his Eternity EP once more the roots of his musical universe: profound melodies and energy-bursting excesses. This time, he is joined by Axel Bartsch, himself running the label “Sportclub”, who mediates with his remix between the alleged contrasts.
