Lomidhigh 06: Raymundo Mendoza

Our friends at the LoMidHigh label/blog series have given us yet another outstanding mix, this time from Raymundo Mendoza. Check out more of LoMidHigh's label and blog site at LoMidHigh.com.

All words and links hereafter courtesy Raymundo and LoMidHigh. Enjoy.

don´t quite remember when I first got in contact with Raymundo, somehow I think it was before I started the Lomidhigh label up in 2006. We began writing back and forth on the mnml.nl website and later started chatting on a regular basis, thru the chats I got to hear a lot of his music which I´ve always been really fond of. Despite me liking his music it´s so far only let to a single track release which was his dubby release "Most Current State of 3 Minutes" which was released on the "Organic City comp." on Lomidhigh Organic last summer.

Raymundo, how are you keeping - tell us about the mix..

I am doing good actually. I been on this kick of simplifying my life.

The mix is me trying to get across this feeling that things are great without the need of all this extra stuff. It does not have to be perfect, it just has to be honest.

Favourite track in the mix?

I love all the tracks equally, but if Im gonna talk about any track I would say "Mocco" by Alex Kid is my favourite track. It's a track you would not expect from him, and things like that I find special.

Where did you record the mix?

I recorded it in my little studio with a noisy crossfader. Im rather fond of the crackles now.

How is the techno scene in texas?

Well I can only really speak about El Paso Texas. It's the furthest west you can get and still call yourself a Texan. I think the techno scene here is pretty good actually. There are these promoters from Juarez Mexico called Pastilla Digital and they been constantly bringing in great talent. They recently started doing shows in El Paso. Juarez Mexico as you may or may not have heard has been hit with a pretty bad drug war. It's a sad thing. That whole city is in some kind of silent fear. Look it up. My friend Cj Tari, he does an internet radio show and some events also. He's been getting a really positive response. I have to say in a way i am a silent supporter of the things that go on here. I don't go out too much or dj that often. I really dedicate my time to my projects. I think thats the best way to support the "scene", by making yourself a better person in whatever it is you do. So yeah things are good.

Youve sent me like 50 loops, when are you going to send me some full tracks?

C'mon Daniel your exaggerating. I'm sure i've sent you a couple of finished tracks. It's coming though. Working with music more so, I have noticed these creative plateaus that I get on. You learn something new, and your happy with that for awhile and it keeps you going for awhile. Later you feel like your going in circles, then you learn or are inspired by something else and your on an even higher creative plateau. Does that make sense? It does to me. Right now though Im feeling good, so be ready.

You are always busy with diff. projects at the same time, what are you up to at the moment, music or art?

Right now the big project that I am working on is of a print that includes some music. Basically the idea or the problem that I am trying to explore is that I have always tried to create a boundary between what I do as an artist visually and the music I make. So now I want to know what happens when I smash them together. I took some photos while walking around on a rainy day, at the same time I was recording audio. So basically Im going to make some music with the audio I captured, and when its done, depending on what samples I am using, I will use pictures of that moment in time and translate everything visually. It's complicated, but most everything you do in audio I can translate visually. For example lets talk about reverb. Reverb tends to put audio further back in the mix and it softens the sound. So visually that picture of that moment would be lighter and blurry. When its done, Ill send you some pictures and hopefully someone will get what the hell i am talking about.

top 5 picks : Food in Texas

1. Track One Chicken Wings - Double Dipped style <--- you can't fuck with these, I took Zip, Sammy Dee, and Markus Nikolai to get some before a show and a few months later they put out DoubleDip on Superlongevity 2

2. my grandmother makes these things called entomatadas, those things will destroy anything you put up against them.

3. Lucky Star - it's some chinese food joint, and the food is good, but the atmosphere is awesome.

4. Chicos Tacos - i gotta say this food is disgusting, yet somehow enjoyable. you have to eat it at least once Its 3 soggy rolled tacos in a tomato sauce topped off with fake industrial yellow looking cheese substitute. It's an El Paso thing.

5. Frisco Burger - greasy as fuck, but delicious.

It's no surprise that, once again, something new and fresh is emerging from the UK. A sound unique in and of itself, yet dangerously close to everything we know already. UK house music is taking chances, and with guy's like Roska heading that campaign, it's exciting to see what the future will bring.

Resident Advisor 195: Thompson

RA.195 Thompson

You can share your thoughts, suggestions or
general love in the RA forum here;

The Barcelonan Red Bull Music Academy participant steps up to the plate for this week's RA podcast.

Here at RA, we've got nothing but love for Red Bull. Instead of throwing money at huge TV advertising campaigns, they've become responsible for one of the most impressive events worldwide, run not for the industry, but for musicians and fans. Starting back in 2002 in Sao Paulo, their Red Bull Music Academy moves to a different city each year, and if you haven't already noticed, their 2010 edition is currently in full swing in London. The first term has just finished, with Terre Thaemlitz, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Steve Reich and A Guy Called Gerald amongst the artists holding court on the Red Bull sofa.

Last year we lined up Johannesburg house sensation Culoe De Song after his time at the Academy for an RA podcast. To celebrate RBMA 2010, we've plucked another. Based in Barcelona, Javier López García has recently donned the Thompson moniker, releasing two fantastic mixes on his MySpace page that encompass classic disco and house with a few cheeky surprises along the way. Completing the mammoth application form for the Academy and getting through their rigorous selection process is one thing, but Thompson is someone who can back it up with his DJing skills and selections. His RA podcast serves to confirm his deep rooted love of black American dance music, keeping things soulful and funky throughout his hour-long mix.

If you like what you hear, you can check out Thompson play at our party in the upstairs of T Bar alongside Italian electronic music don Marco Passarani and other RBMA DJs on March 4th, where we'll be teaming up with Red Bull for an action-packed Thursday night that also features a star-studded bass music line-up of Untold, Scuba, Mike Slott and Jamie Vex'd.

Fase - Give Us a Break LP

Artist: Fase
Title: Give Us A Break LP
Label: Airdrop Records
Format: Digital Album – Free Download
Cat.No.: Airdropped 03
Release Date: 15th February 2010
Style: Post-Cowboy / Folkimal / After-Afterhours

Airdrop’s free download series continues onto its third episode. After inaugurating our string of free releases with an exclusive remix by Berlin Tech-House maestro TILL VON SEIN, followed by a three RnB edits by Boston House duo SOUL CLAP, Airdropped presents a full length album by Airdrop regulars, FASE.

DOWNLOAD IT HERE

Pedro Perelman & Gustavo “Defi” Gagliardo are the musicians and artists behind the multifaceted Argentine collective, FASE. On their website – www.mundofase.com – you can discover the whole world of creations emanating from these guys, ranging from video production to contemporary painting, street art and of course, fine electronic music.

After many releases on Argentina’s seminal record label Igloo, various records on Airdrop, as well as large European and North American tours, the boys are back again. The wicked world of FASE where music, painting and street art all warp into one, creates yet another entire universe consisting of organically evolving structures, adapting to the evolution of music.

For Airdropped 03, FASE delivers “Give Us A Break“, an experimental and explorational record. Providing two variations – an A-side and a B-side – to each one of six themes this project combines a certain nostalgia on the A-sides, to more sanguineness on the B-sides. “Give Us A Break” offers an entire journey to the West : its scorched textures and wooden aromas set us straight in the deserted backdrop of a road movie – deep and reflexive.

1. Unlucky (A-side)
2. Unlucky (B-side)
3. Dear Sheila (A-side)
4. Dear Shelia (B-side)
5. Give Us A Break (A-side)
6. Give Us A Break (B-side)
7. Folkimal (A-side)
8. Folkimal (B-side)
9. Lighter Slide (A-side)
10. Lighter Slide (B-side)
11. Fade Out (A-side)
12. Fade Out (B-side)

Through the A-sides, we find ourselves on the burning banks of a river. The harmonicas and guitars hold in their melodies a clear country and funk root, juxtaposing with breaky and minimal rythmical structures.

The album’s title track “Give Us A Break” is the soundtrack to an adult’s awakening, going from vertigo through to more sensitives landscapes, while “Lighter Slide” mocks itself of human conduct and everlasting fights, in loop…

On the B-sides, the folk melodies evolve into deeper and more hypnotic lines. The harmonies knit themselves around solid grooves and the range of frequencies move us to a twilight-fête where the warm and organic are kings. The B-side variations present cyclical, yet disarticulated and ironical rhythms. A certain open-air dancefloor focus is indeed preserved here.

Produced by Fase: Pedro Perelman & Gustavo “Defi” Gagliardo in Buenos Aires
between October and December of 2009

[2Circles012] Dojo - Idlematch EP

Andrew Juarez, under his moniker Dojo, brings us his debut album Idle Match. A Los Angeles native,w who now calls the mighty Pacific Northwest his home, combines his own brand of dub-inspired rhythms and lush ambient soundscapes. Dojo's Idle Match is a step into the mind of the artist himself. The release is highlighted by the floor ready "Extrapolated", and followed up by Dojo's foray into the more experimental side of himself, from which he relates his ability to capture a moment in sound with "Posit" and "Ultra Waltz". The release is rounded out by the soul-infused "Tall City", including a powerfully dark remix from Blipswitch artist Selande, as well as a tribal reinterpretation by simple. With art created specifically for the album by Daniel Lofredo, the release is as one from start to finish.

AUDIO808_20 COVER

ANUO
Meersellige

(R.Massoni)

"In the short time that implies adopting the days to come, some people opt for the easiest road thus avoiding the uncertainties, there are those who do not choose because they know their freedom of choice and there are those who transit roads full of unknowns about these vertices or states on which side is balance. Audio: 808 mutates constantly and is reformulated through the pleasant surprise that means each disk. This is one of those discs that changes the shape and acient foundation of those decisions that involve walking, balancing, without feeling quite comfortable but assuming our full freedom to opt for a slow and winding, dark, side, unique and complex." Klamauk.net : A Different Approach

Just outside of the city of Frankfurt lies Mainz, the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Art collective Klamauk calls Mainz their home, where many of the labels artists live and prosper. Other musicians on the lineup come from all over the world, from Canada to Italy. Taking simple ideas of dance music and transforming them into impressionable after-thoughts can be quite the task for any new label, but Klamauk has seemed to excel in the platform of originality in its few years.

12inch vinyl | cat.-nr.: klak 001 | release date: 30.11.2008 | various artists | 300 pieces only | A1 prügelknabe, just two ordinary people | A2 splatter funk, paradroid | B1 prügelknabe rmx, le K | B2 mein klamauk, keinzweiter | colored by micha, tilman, anna, tobi, karsten | used waterproof thinliner for coloring

As described on their website, Klamauk means confusion, noise, and a variety of other synonyms, the label comes together to represent the individual on his/her journey through creation. With two vinyl releases since November 2008, it's very clear that the artists behind this clever project know exactly what they are doing. Each vinyl sleeve contains artwork by the musicians, hand-painted manually onto each limited pressing.

12inch vinyl | cat.-nr.: klak 002 | release date: 01.09.2009 | various artists | 500 pieces only | A1 the camouflage, paul frick | A2 rabo, scott | B1 sir slipper, the clover | B2 water passed a bridge, tom ellis | colored by micha, tilman, karsten and dennis | used spray cans for coloring

The music is refreshingly fun, with the ability to relax the listener at home or in a social environment. Click, snap, thump, roll, twist...the rhythm is redefined by each track. The artists seem to compliment each other, with common themes driven by common passions. While so many musicians and artists struggle to find their identity, Klamauk artists have already found theirs. Please visit klamauk.net for more information on the projects, and stay tuned!

This is what the EP sounds like:
Riding into town wearing the Emperor’s new clothes and a bobble hat, Le Jockey caused quite a scene. Panic and confusion spread rapidly amongst many of the more narrow minded people in town and pretty soon they had all bolted home, locked their doors, and turned on some S Club Juniors to help ease them back to their happy place.
But for the curious and oblivious that remained, the next 25 minutes would be a time of wonder, joy, and curiosity, mixed in with just a slight hint of mischief…
Leaping off his horse and landing squarely on his side, Signor Jockey rolled around in the mud for a few seconds. Springing to his feet and straightening up his ruffled Emperor’s clothes, he took a long hard look at the people around him. Suddenly he reached down into the muddy ground, grabbed at something, and, struggling to contain the thing, slowly pulled an object from the ground.
The crowd edged in closer, holding their breath and straining to see what lay concealed in his hand. Whatever it was, it was wriggling around furiously and franticly, emitting a bright light which was leaking out between the cracks in his fingers. Slowly opening his hand, the light flooded out and engulfed the crowd. Simultaneously, they let out a muted gasp. Sat square in the middle, and now lying perfectly still, was a tiny little fish no bigger than a 2p coin.
Clearing his throat, Jockey announced boldly to the crowd:
‘Behold the weird and wonderful Rhonda Fish. There is only ever one Rhonda Fish in the world at any one time. And I am the keeper of the Rhonda Fish. Now, listen and hear what the Rhonda Fish has to say.’
And at this point the fish opened its tiny mouth and said…
To find out what the Rhonda Fish says, look out for the next part of the story with the next release on Thursday 22nd Feb 2010.

Resident Advisor 193: Petre Inspirescu

The Romanian producer steps out of the shadows for a mix of otherworldly house and techno on this week's RA podcast.

Though he likes to keep a pretty low profile, Romanian house artist Petre Inspirescu, or Pedro as he's sometimes called, is probably one of the most talented names in electronic music today. As a producer, he makes the sort of mysterious, otherworldly house tracks that, as Terrence Fuller puts it, "result in those WTF dance floor moments" you're always hoping for when you go to a club. Pedro first caught our attention in 2007 with the release of Tips, his exceptional Cadenza debut, and outdid himself last December with Intr-o Seara Organica..., his incredibly deep album on [a:rpia:r].

But as subtle and refined as his productions may be, Pedro also excels in totally unleashed, sweaty peak-time energy. Along with his [a:rpia:r] comrades Raresh and Rhadoo, Pedro is known for his extensive record collection and his marathon sets. In his RA Podcast, recorded live at Fabric last November, Inspirescu shows just how panoramic his style is, elegantly maneuvering from restrained minimal to hard-hitting house and techno. We caught up with Pedro via email to ask him about his upcoming album, Unsound Festival New York (at which he'll make his US debut this coming weekend) and new names to watch for from Romania's vibrant scene.

ingern - irregularity motions
SMV013 (Releasedate: 2010-01-25)
spontanMusik opens the 2010 season with a special release. "irregularity motions" of Japanese newcomer "ingern" could be a mix of a slot machine, Paradroid and a noisy easteregg. This combination could have come from our hometown Mainz, but it comes from the heart of Japan. The album with its 8 tracks could not be more freaked out, more colorful or more blinky psychotic. But is this not that what you need in the music world full of constant repetitions?

mnml ssgs mx49: natural/electronic.system.

mnml ssgs blog continues their smart, provocative approach to a dance music podcast series with this selection. s
.........................................
this week we continue with our very slow reliving of last year's labyrinth, now with a 2nd contribution from one of the standout acts of the festival: natural/electronic.system.

i know it is something that we keep on talking about, but having a distinctive sound is absolutely key for us. there is plenty of good music out there, we want something a bit more. and that's what is so great about what natural/electronic.system do. they are really developing a sound and feel which is distinctly their own. these guys just pitch it down a bit deeper than most, then take you under.

this is what natural/electronic.system. had to say about the mix:

"2009 has been a year full of emotions for us. Something so special that it's difficult to find good words to describe it, but music can be really handy with that...

The idea behind the podcast this time is to recreate the light differences during sunshine through the music... A start with light that gradually fades into darkness... This would sort of recall what we experienced in Japan during the 3hrs of our set, but at the same time with a different approach. So you can feel the flow changing during the recording and slightly differences with the last mix we made.

This mix is our wish for a great new year to all our old and new friends around the world.
Just enjoy it...

Antonio + Valerio"
