Resident Advisor 192: Jacaszek

The Polish electroacoustic musician connects the dots between his own work and classical music giants on this week's RA podcast.

Michał Jacaszek is the latest in a tradition of Eastern Europeans exploring the reaches of sentimentality in classical music. A resolutely modern musician, the Polish electroacoustic composer has constructed his work like any producer on his six full-lengths. But while he painstakingly plots his out his pieces on the computer, there is nonetheless a current of emotion that connects Jacaszek to beloved modern composers like Arvo Pärt and Henryk Górecki as much as there is between Jacaszek and producers like Gas, Fennesz and Jóhann Jóhannsson.

Jacaszek interest in the sacred was made explicit on his most recent album, 2009's Pentral, in which he sampled sounds from churches, exploiting the natural reverb that occurs in such enormous structures. And he also makes it plain on his RA podcast, in which he connects the dots between modern classical music and his own compositions—with the likes of Bach and Tallis also thrown in for good measure. Slow and delicate, it may be one of the most ambient RA podcasts yet.

Derek Plaslaiko Percussion Lab Mix

Spectral Sound & The Bunker's Derek Plaslaiko has been a staple of the NYC Techno scene since he relocated here from Detroit in 2004. He's performed at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival multiple times, even being asked by Carl Craig to perform at the inaugural edition, had residencies at the best underground techno events in NYC and toured the globe, consistently bringing his slice of the Motor City wherever he goes. Some of the love he's been getting from the press includes being voted DJ of the year by The Village Voice and landing in the Next 100 URB listing...

Let me be honest here - this mix is fire. It starts off with one of the funkiest wooden steppin' beats we've heard in recent memory and doesn't let up. Plaslaiko's selection here doesn't give you much time to rest. African loops, hand drums, searing bass lines and thick, pitched vocals guide you through Plaslaiko's dark, funky tech. I may be biased, but this is one of the best, most emotive mixes I've ever heard from Derek - you're gonna be sweating and flailing on that dance floor for sure, but you might even shed a tear or two. The mix features tracks by My My, Adam Marshall, DJ Qu, Reverse Commuter, and some original tracks & remixes by Derek and Kate Simko.

Aside from Spinoza's impeccable booking and DJing, there's a reason why The Bunker is NY's top techno party - and that reason is Derek Plaslaiko. You can catch Derek performing at multiple events at this year's Unsound Festival NYC, the first being The Bunker Edition 1 at Public Assembly, February 5th. Don't sleep - Krakow to NYC.

Resident Advisor 190: DJ Stingray

RA.190 DJ Stingray

The Urban Tribe leader flexes his turntable talents on this week's RA podcast.

Sherard Ingram has been an active member in Detroit's electronic music community for nearly 25 years now, stretching back all the way to his first release as NASA on cult Detroit imprint Express Records alongside Scan 7's Trackmaster Lou. Never shy of a collaboration, Ingram spent much of the '90s teaming up with Carl Craig, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir and Kenny Dixon Jr. to create a rich downtempo sound as Urban Tribe on James Lavelle's Mo Wax label, with culminated in the release of 1998's much-lauded The Collapse of Modern Culture album. He was then recruited to be the tour DJ for Drexciya in their final days, taking to the decks as DJ Stingray and masking his face from the audience, something he continues to do for all of his DJ appearances.

In recent years, his production work—as DJ Stingray, Mystic Tribe A.I., and Urban Tribe—has focused much more on his solo talents, and is now grounded in the futuristic electro style that is associated with his DJ sets. If anything, Ingram's skills behind the desk are improving with age, as demonstrated by last year's Social Engineering EP, which contained "tracks that transcend genre and time" according to RA's Richard Brophy. 2009 also saw Ingram launch his Micron Audio label with the digitally released First Wave collection of tracks from Annie Hall, Mariska, Kon and himself amongst others, and it looks like 2010 will be a busy year for the imprint, what with the vinyl release of First Wave along with a multitude of additional 12-inches. We caught up with Sherard by e-mail to ask him about the mix, his thoughts about the electro genre and his collaborations with Drexciyan compadre Gerald Donald, AKA Heinrich Mueller.
