[dB in review] Fax (Mexicali, MX) #decibel

This year, I was fortunate enough to attend the highly acclaimed Decibel Festival in Seattle. Since 2003, dB has aimed to not only bring fans in Seattle and everywhere quality music with precision sound, but also exceptional visuals projected through today's top video technologies. Located within several different venues throughout the Pacific Northwestern city and maintained over a period of five days in late September, the lineup for this year's festival beamed with potential.

As these reviews will be broken into individual performance sections in no particular order, let's shift focus to Mexicali resident Ruben Tamayo, better known under his performance moniker of Fax. Not knowing what to expect from Fax, but wedged onto a lineup of Luke Hess, Monolake, and Pepe Bradock, he sure seemed likely to fit my tastes in music. Walking into Neumo's during the time that the below video was shot, the patient sounds of the percussion and the delicate placement of the live guitar playing instantly caught my attention as I made my way into the middle of a half-empty club floor. The music itself had a familiarity to it, but the live performance of the guitar in place of the typical midi instrument was beyond intriguing. The rest of the set called for more live guitar involvement, and each song stood apart from its preceding relative. Catching only half of Fax' set on Sunday night, it was surely enough for me to establish a lasting interest in the Mexican producer's music.

Fax released his album Zig Zag on May 18th earlier this year.
