Insideout: July Promo Mix

Grant Aaron, aka Insideout, is co-owner of and recording artist on Clink Recordings. Grant began DJing in 1997, mainly influenced by the striped down minimal sounds of Daniel Bell, Plastikman and Mike Ink. It didn't take long for those influences to persuade him to move from behind the decks to the studio. His first original sounds came in the form of Ambient and Experimental with a full length album titled, Embrace. This was released on his co-created multimedia net label, Lifeform Project, which he started with several producers from his hometown of Atlanta, but that was just the beginning. With the International response and success of the net label, Grant realized his personal longing to progress his musical ideas even further. He relocated to Brooklyn, New York, and teamed up with close friend, DJ and producer, Camea. Clink Recordings was born in the Fall of 2005. They have since released a catalogue of very successful solo and collaborative EP's from NY artists Afternoon Coffee Boys, Tim Xavier, Tony Rohr, Camea, Insideout, Ambivalent and Elon. His collaborative debut with Camea, Nothing Shocking/Azimuth (Clink 002), was a hit and played by artists such as Richie Hawtin, Magda and Adam Beyer. As a solo artist, Grant's production combines the influences of modern minimal techno and the basic fundamentals of this genre: intricate percussive programming, dark atmospherics and an irresistible cavernous bounce. In recent years, Grant has meticulously created a following and demand for his deep, conceptually minimal DJ sets. He rotates regular gigs in South America, North America and Europe, and is a New York after-hours favorite. An avid music collector, Grant is consistent and explores the new trends and sounds within this genre, and it is guaranteed he will always have the latest and greatest ideas embedded within his performances. His live and dj shows are an array of influences and keep the floor moving from start to finish.

[Ouzo 25] Marcos Coya - Fraterno EP w/ Z@p REMIX

Marcos Coya delivers his promising first Ouzo release with two tracks which show some of the elements that have been present in our dancefloor releases since the beggining: a crossroads between techno and house with strokes of dub, jazz, minimal and electronica. "Rebound" kicks off with some
an electric piano which builds up the tension, some subbass action, claps and a dark and energetic mood. "Oblicuos" leans towards
tech-house with a powerful groove and many surprises... As if that werent enough the closing bonus is Z@p´s remix of "Rebound", plagued
with microsampling and the various timbres which have become this artists signature.

Tracklist:
1- Rebound
2- Oblicuos
3- Rebound (Z@p Remix)

Resident Advisor 165: Drums of Death

Scottish producer Drums Of Death demonstrates the art of noise on this week's RA podcast.

Think Scottish electronica and what comes to mind? The chart bothering exploits of minor celebrity Calvin Harris? The sample-heavy electro house of "will-he-ever-release-a-second-album" Mylo? How about the early electronic moments and twee vocal stylings of Belle & Sebastian? Colin Bailey, AKA Drums of Death, is the snarling antithesis of all of those that have come before him: intense, raucous and a touch confrontational, Bailey has been an oft-discussed force for the last 12 months now, thanks to his frenetic live shows, chumminess with electro trash queen Peaches and, of course, the "voodoo-zombie" persona he adopts every time he climbs on stage.

Hailing from Oban, a small fishing village on the west coast of Scotland, Bailey promptly upped sticks and headed to Glasgow during his late teens. It was in his twenties, and time in Glasgow, that Bailey’s thirst for live performance was quenched through an involvement in hardcore and punk bands, before eventually turning his hand to solo electronic experiments, and moving to London.

Bailey aligned himself with the Berlin-based Greco-Roman imprint late last year who released the aptly titled Drums of Death Steps Into the Ring EP which will be followed by a full-length album though the label at the beginning of next year. It has been in the live arena, though, where Bailey has caused the most carnage; touring with Hot Chip and Peaches and appearing at a multitude of dingy low-ceilinged basements and festivals. Speaking which, Bailey plays the Bloggers Delight at Field Day this Saturday which will be the next opportunity to catch his rambunctious live show. For his RA podcast, Bailey throws together a heady concoction of crunchy electro and full-bodied techno into the blender; garnished with warped sample snippets and plenty of wtf!? moments, which would be best enjoyed with a can of Iron Bru at the Sunday dinner table. That's our take at least.

[Pinksilver Net 015] Trinity & Beyond - Beyond Musique

[psnet015] Trinity & Beyond - Beyond Musique EP

Pinksilver Net is over the moon to welcome fresh Australian talent to their growing and well respected roster of creative & vibrant artists in the form Sydney duo Trinity & Beyond.

Trinity & Beyond is a collaboration between DJ Trinity & producer J. Trinity has been at the forefront of Australia’s underground house & techno scene since 2002 as a DJ while J., with a history of classical music composition & past student of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, has turned his creative talents to composing tomorrow’s music today alongside Trinity as Trinity & Beyond.

The title track ‘Beyond Musique’ is a marching techno tune with a distinct industrial edge. The glitched-out, spooky ghost-like vocals present & combine with a gritty synth line to reveal a dark, edgy & thoughtful late night stormer. This one screams at the punters “Get your arse front and centre!!”

‘The Fat Man’ further showcases Trinity & Beyond’s affinity for warm-sounding synth lines. Layered on top of the warmth is a select layer of glitchy textures with a superb pad that brings the deepness where it’s most needed. Definitely one for the late night, together with the title track of the EP.

‘Nothing Else Matters’ showcases the deeper and more sensual sounds of Trinity & Beyond while still keeping the straight-up, no nonsense attitude of the previous two tracks. It’s a coolly, minimalist techno beat that stretches replete with deeper melancholia.

‘Beyond Musique’ is proudly presented by Pinksilver Net.

Archipel Podcast: Monocle

Go to Download: [Archipel Podcast] Monocle (Live)

Highly Recommended!!!

BIO

Monocle is the brainchild of Danny Patterson and Christina Chatfield,
two sound designers whose collaboration began in 2004 while attending
the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they studied Music
Synthesis. What began as a collaboration for class blossomed into a
full-fledged live PA and production team.

Monocle's debut release Dilleniidae (2007, Racecar Productions) was an
immediate success, drawing praise and and raising eyebrows from
high-profile corners. Shortly after its release, Dilleniidae appeared
on several minimal download charts, climbing to number 2 on Dance
Tracks Digital and securing a place in the top 40 on Juno Records.
Other releases include Something to Say (2007, Racecar Productions)
and a remix on Mossmoss' Eating Glass (2008, Nightlight Music).

Since then, the duo has relocated to San Francisco, taking the city by
storm with their cutting edge, gear-heavy live sets. Monocle won
praise for the amount of new material in each performance, quickly
building a following among San Francisco techno fans. After being in
the Bay Area for only a year, Monocle has been invited to play San
Francisco's biggest techno parties, including appearances at [KONTROL]
and Mighty where they've played alongside Cassy, Matthew Dear, Alland
Byallo, and Nikola Baytala to name a few.

Monocle's tracks expose listeners to a diverse spectrum of beats,
ranging anywhere from dark minimalist soundscapes to thoughtful analog
melodies with a groove. In 2009, expect releases on SF's own
Nightlight Music label and stay tuned for more to come from this
dynamic duo.

Resident Advisor 164: Maayan Nidam (Miss Fitz)

Miss Fitz drops the pseudonym on this week's RA podcast.

Maayan Nidam may be much more familiar to you when she’s DJing or producing under her Miss Fitz moniker, but this year has arguably been all about the noise she’s been making under her own name. As Fitz, she’s been releasing her own minimal house and techno for over three years now, fusing together synthetic and organic sounds to create a restrained yet powerfully rhythmic style, and she’s also proved her worth as a collaborator, releasing alongside Robert Johnson resident Vera Heindel as Mara Trax, and Berlin-based ex-Detroiters Shaun Reeves and Lee Curtiss as Uli Künkel.

Her short but illustrious track record began to stir the interests of Japanese label PowerShovel Audio at the start of last year, whose representatives were already in Cuba recording native instrumentalists and vocalists for the project. After handing Nidam the master tapes of their source material, she began to interpret the samples into loops and sketches, eventually merging the two disparate worlds of minimal house and indigenous Cuban music into what would become the Night Long LP. Here at RA we were big fans of the album, and hence decided to ask Nidam to deliver a similarly themed mix for this week’s podcast. With plenty of lush instrumentation throughout, she’s crafted a smooth selection that encompasses jazz-funk, disco, and house without ever letting up the groove.

Resident Advisor 163: Pisco Sour (Butane + Dandy Jack)

Butane and Dandy Jack join forces on this week's RA podcast.

Martin Schopf is definitely a producer who enjoys a bit of collaboration. When he's not busy creating his own imaginary studio partners, the Chilean techno buff can be found manipulating his machines alongside the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Tobias Freund, Sonja Moonear and many other well-established electronic artists. While minimal techno with ethnic samples may be the current flavour of the month, Schopf's consistently forward-thinking Latin-infused sound refuses to adhere to any set template, with experimentation and innovation taking precedent over simple club functionality.

His latest project is with Alphahouse owner Andrew Rasse, whom you may be familiar with through his mind-bending productions as Butane. Originally hailing from St. Louis, Rasse made the somewhat inevitable move to Berlin two years ago, and hasn't looked back since. His recent Endless Forms album for Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels imprint was an exercise in making tracks with a feeling of evolution (with Rasse citing Charles Darwin as a major influence on the work), and it's this passion for minimal music that exercises both the mind and body that brought the two together to form Pisco Sour. This week's RA podcast showcases the duo's third gig together from earlier this month in Berlin, combining Schopf's swinging rhythms and Rasse's cerebral charge to devastating effect.

AirPod 26 with Elon!

Over the past few weeks I've been communicating a lot with Airdrop, a US and Argentina based music blog, label, event coordinator and booking agency dedicated to art in music. You might have noticed their huge parties all over the world, such as Hejdrop afterparty for DEMF and the Detroit vs. Argentina parties in Berlin. With an artist lineup consisting of artists like Dilo, Crazy Larry, Fase Miusic Sender and many more, it's clear that Airdrop has carefully chosen their lineup to consist of those extremely passionate with music. Needless to say, our collective completely fell in love with the vision that Airdrop conveys, and I'm pleased to announce that Dilo will be coming to Atlanta in September!! But for now, I hope you enjoy this wonderfully crafted podcast by none other than Elon. Airdrop gives us this excellent mix, which was recorded during Elon's journey to Australia during one of his live sets.

Thank you Airdrop! And for everyone else, get ready for Dilo's first appearance in Atlanta :)

Matthias Tanzmann live in Atlanta this Saturday!

A weekend trip to the mountains seemed like a great idea at the time, but that quickly turned into a bad idea when I found out that Matthias Tanzmann would be coming to Bazzaar, the ultra-hip yet ego-less midtown Atlanta lounge, the same weekend. Your presence is still needed even though our posse will be absent, and we want you to dance twice as hard for us! Diagnostik has busted their ass all year and since they were formed, and this will be their last guest show at Bazzaar. Many thanks goes to Bill Kaelin @ Bazzaar for his many years and countless help with Atlanta's underground dance music scene, and we look forward to seeing what Bill has in store for the future!

Resident Advisor 162: nsi

This week's RA podcast sees Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer showcase their trippy live show.

The Berlin apartment that houses Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer's Non Standard Studios is a quaint place that complements the oddness of the duo's output. In one room you've got a toilet, sink and a gold disc of Milli Vanilli's breakthrough album Girl You Know It's True (Freund worked as an engineer on the record), and in the other are two racks of vintage analogue equipment that would be enough to make any self-respecting gear fanatic wildly jealous. But while they may have all sorts of Roland drum machines and a Doepfer modular synth that Kraftwerk had a hand in making, it's their experience behind the mixing desk that helps to make their visceral and uncompromising take on minimalism and techno possible.

As well as working as an engineer on commercial projects, Freund has been steadily releasing his own electronic music since 1989, encompassing breakbeat, trance, techno and electro under various guises before settling on tobias. as the moniker of choice for his dance floor-focused material. Loderbauer's work with Sun Electric, Chica & The Folder and The Moritz von Oswald Trio, meanwhile, speaks for itself, and his obvious passion for both playing and tweaking his vintage synthesisers is the cornerstone of the nsi. sound. As well as producing some of the most inventive and aurally accomplished minimal techno around on their twelve-inch singles for both Cadenza and their own Non Standard Productions imprint, Freund and Loderbauer have also ventured into the modern classical arena with their almost entirely beatless Non Standard Institute Plays Non Standards record on Sahko.

Most of their records are recorded entirely live, and on this week's RA podcast we've got a recording of the duo in their element at this year's Mutek festival in Montreal.

[broque 054] richvomdorf - momento e.p.

Quite interesting how long it can take to compile an EP. Momento definitely took his time, to decide on the right story line. This story is told by the two original tracks produced by RichVomDorf, who is well-known in the field of netaudio.
It might be also even more interesting to find out what other people do with his material. In that, we are very happy about the very untypical combination of Georg Neufeld and Hakan Lidbo, a very special collaboration between Tampopo Noodleking of Gigolo-fame and Garry Grand and last but not least, an entirely new interpretation by Pseudonimo from Lisbon. An experiment with lovely deep sounds.
