Hamburg's king of vinyl houses it up in a deliciously deep style on this week's RA podcast.
Despite his inauspicious beginnings as a gardener, Peter Kersten has spent the last decade becoming one of the main players on Hamburg's music scene. In that time he's notched up 12-inches for some of the world's most popular electronic labels—Kompakt, Mule Electronic, Ghostly International, Ladomat 2000, Sender, Spectral Sound and Smallville just to name a few. From wistfully romantic electronica to bumping deep house, Kersten's musical gamut runs far and wide throughout the sphere of electronic music, but his sound is a distinctive and recognisable one. Taking the ingredients of classic Chicago and Detroit productions, softening the edges and applying his trademark melodic sheen, Kersten's finished products often get you grooving whilst tugging those heartstrings.
It isn't just his productions that have elevated him to the status he currently enjoys, though. Kersten is one-third of the team that has helped to launch the careers of Efdemin, Pantha Du Prince and John Roberts via the Dial imprint, which managed to grab RA's label of the year accolade back in 2007 after a run of essential releases. For Kersten, selling vinyl is a serious business, and he's just helped to start Laid, Dial's vinyl-only sub-label, with a 12-inch from US deep house legend Rick Wade. Hamburg residents can even find him behind the counter at the city's Smallville record store, which he co-owns with Smallville Records owner Julius Steinhoff. Vinyl is also Peter's medium of choice when it comes to DJing, and for this week's RA podcast he's taken to his Technics to supply us with a selection of deep and grooving house cuts with a big Detroit influence. We caught up with Kersten by e-mail to ask him about the mix, the Dial residency at Panorama Bar and his Smallville record store.
The Durban-based DJ and Innervisions producer lays down his signature sound of super-soulful, afro house. Recorded live at Sonar 2009 for Red Bull Music Academy. So far this is one of our favorite Sonar 09 sets, and it's clear why Bodytonic picks it up.
Over the last few months, you might have noticed a strong connection between this webspace and the San Francisco label/netlabel Two Circles. Over the next few months/years, you will probably see an even closer connection, for IT and Heat have teamed up with the experimental techno and dubstep label in the efforts to bring you even more music at more outlets. Two Circles' Fourth release comes from Lithuanian experimental producer Soulsonic. Very airy, ambient sounds come from the speakers as Soulsonic lulls the listener into a state of euphoria. Enjoy.

Mike Zarin Opening Set: Mark Farina June 19th 2009 1:15:31 - 320kbps If you have ever been to or lived in Atlanta for any amount of time, then you most likely know who Mike Zarin is. For those of you who don't, he is one of the hardest working individuals in the dance music community. With hard work often comes stress and attitude changes, yet Mike seems to keep his composure everywhere he goes. Aside from all this, he creates sets that speak to the audience and this set is no different. Warming up for Mark Farina, this is Mike Zarin live @ the Mark Ultra Lounge.
DOWNLOAD Tracklisting to be posted shortly, enjoy!
This set was recorded live at Kiss & Tell (our first podcast recording from our excellent sister party) at Rose Live Music on May 16, 2009. Secrets is Matt Abbott, who also goes by Vacuum and G.O.D. (Guys On Drugs). Amongst the disco classics in this set are a ton of his own edits. Matt is a super talented guy you'll be hearing a lot about, and we're very lucky to have him in NYC now (he's a recent Detroit transplant). You can read more about him here.
D.Soul (Daniel Tischer), born 1977 in Wiesbaden, Germany, now living near Frankfurt, started experimenting with electronic music in 1996. Inspired by the vibrant local scene and the sound of this time, particlularly at Frankfurt’s internationally renowned club "OMEN", Daniel began to DJ at private parties and research modern production techniques. In 2004 he organized events with friends at a club called Metro, where he also refined his skills as a dj while developing a unique voice as a producer.
In 2005 he founded the Tropic Netlabel both as a creative outlet for himself and other like-minded musicians. In 2006 D.Soul had several releases on netlabels such as Audio808, Corpid, Bumpfoot, as first non chilean artist on Pueblo Nuevo, Stratagem, ItaloBusiness and Tropic among others.
In 2007 the spanish Netlabel Inoquo was the home of his first lp and in 2008 he works on a lot of remixes for artists like Jon Doe, Carlo and Sven Laux. In 09 he has a track on a various artists compilation on the japanese label Fountain Music together with Popnoname, Dave Angel, Dj Yellow and others. Beside producing he perform in different venues like Tanzhaus West, Frankfurt, Lysa Club Erfurt, Colonial Bar Marbella, Dora Brilliant, Frankfurt and Raw Tempel Berlin and love to see people dance. As a musical principle, D.Soul always try to produce and mix a kind of colored and vivid electronic music, with it’s own stylistic flavor. Under his moniker ELATE he walks on the more housy side of music.

I was fortunate enough to catch Heidi at the infamous Minitek Festival in Coney Island Park last September and since then, we've heard nothing but excellence from the Berliner. Playing a set of entirely vinyl is a rarity these days, and Heidi looked great while doing it. Here is her InNewDJsWeTrust mix featured on Radio 1/BBC. Enjoy!

Due to a great response from the Sonar downloads, I recognize the fact that some of you have been having troubles with some of the download sites (like Uploaded.to mainly). Below are some of my favorite sets that I've heard this year from alternative sites. Sorry for the less frequent posts...currently working on getting a new machine to click clack on! :)
Bonne St-Jean! It’s with grat pleasure that Archipel, Montreal based label, has 2 releases for you to get for free. As we’re currently celebrating the St-Jean, which is Quebec’s national or USA’s 4th of July part, so it made sense we would introduce you to an artist from here, Galerie Stratique. We feel very lucky to have the chance to do the digital distribution of this high end product with detailed and sophisticated sound design. It certainly gives a whole new sense to what traditional Quebec music could in 100 years. Galerie Stratique - Antihoraire Label: Archipel Cat: ARCHHS01 Format: Digital Only A very new and special sub-series on Archipel introduce music as a free release, just like our first releases. The main approach is to make you discover new music from artists you might never heard of because their music genre was far off what you usually listen to. Which brings us to Galerie Stratique who previously released an album as CD and was searching a way to reach the digital crowd. Our reaction to this opus was an immediate feeling to support it. This release is happening on the Quebec's national day so everything makes even more sense. About the release, here goes with a few words: "The idea of using global music soundscapes came to me while I was experimenting with field recordings of crowds. As a result of my ochlophobic* background, my experiments quickly assumed a disturbing mood that I was not aiming for with "Faux World." In the end, however, a coherence and harmony emerged in sequencing the isolated tracks, and the album successfully captured my transition from electronic to acoustic experimental. Tracklisting: * Ochlophobie * Désolation Anticipée * Les Beautées se noient * Ethique Cathartique * Désorienté (Long) * Antihoraire Enjoy this free release (download), Bonne St-Jean! ---- DJ Sodeyama - Now Is The Time Label: Archipel Cat: ARCH055 Format: Digital Only Archipel welcomes Japan's Sodeyama who brings us the ultra thick, molten hot percussive "Now is the time", which comes in both vocal and instrumental flavors, begins with a heavily rhythmic and rolling bass fueled pulse which provides for a solid, and yet very much fluid, foundation which is in constant evolution and is laced with the potent words of Martin Luther King, Jr. Which are nested safely within this rolling aural landscape and hypnotically are lead into a very deep section of warm, plush padding which then rushes back into action with spellbinding force. "Sea Forest" is enormously heavy and rhythmically forms a liquid romp through well kept oceanic forestry as its might suggest, wrapping the listening in a shimmering shroud of wooden melodies which roam into deeper and darker areas and eventually back into clearings of light while "Slow Mist", again as it's title suggests, lightly billows and creeps horizontally across rolling dew laced fields of tall, slender, translucent plants which shimmer with refracted and diffused dawn light, giving its surroundings a delicate but tangible glow. This release is available for free! (download) If you wish to support the artist, you can still show your love with a token of appreciation by buying it at your favorite shops such as Beatport.com and WhatPeoplePlay.com More info: http://www.archipel.cc Also on Twitter & Facebook
The mustachioed half of secretsundaze takes things deep for RA on this week's podcast.
It's not often that we think of Giles Smith apart from James Priestley, but the duo that make up the DJing arm of secretsundaze are very much distinct characters. Smith is the deep house don, Priestley the disco diva in disguise. And while there are clearly common pockets of interest, it's clear that what they do is complementary—with few overlaps. Smith's love of the deep kicked off in earnest via his residency for the legendary Faith parties, where he cut his teeth under the tutelage of X-Press 2 and Terry Farley. He soon left, however, to begin sundaze with Priestley, building up the brand into one of London's hottest events, and a summertime tradition for clued-up clubbers interested in coming down from a long weekend of partying. Since then, they've extended to become a worldwide phenomena, throwing parties in Barcelona, Ibiza and Miami (among other places) in addition to their usual summer schedule in the UK. And Smith, as many of his DJ brethren have done, has also begun to produce music as well. Martin Dawson, AKA King Roc, and Smith form Two Armadillos and have had a string of releases on Dessous, Buzzin' Fly and Four:Twenty with much to come in the summer of 2009. Already released this year are remixes on Dessous and Fear of Flying and original productions—the Je Suis Differente EP and Rattlesnake 12-inch—on Sthlmaudio and Motivbank with work on BangBang! (2000 and One's new-ish house label) yet to come. The work is, as always, defined by a deep house sound, and that's exactly what Smith provides on his RA podcast too. Detroit, New York, Paris, Amsterdam and London: Wherever there is house music being created, Smith has found it and put it in the mix. With it looking unlikely that there will be a secretsundaze, Vol. 3 CD release, consider it the next best thing.
With his new longplayer "Globus Cassus", Tobias Lorsbach connects to the mysterious world of retro futurism. influenced by authors like Stanislaw Lem and his philosophical excourses into the field of artificial intelligence, Keinzweiters music is a lush journey into the world of lost data and modular synthesis. reassembling the patterns of life in all its complexity is unattainable for mankind - "Globus Cassus" is a kind of aural statement to this uncertainty. With it´s outlandish deepness, the avoidance of simple hooklines it is more asking questions than giving answers, echoing the last 5 decades of electronic music and the existencial questions connected to the topic man vs machine.
The Modular Unit I is a selection with tracks of the past 16 releases and some fresh tunes never published before, that shall give you a more detailed view into our back catalogue and towards upcoming releases.

The following Track “The Second Base” was taken from the first various artist compilation after the renaming from DCC-Records into Modularfield. Wonderful swedish sound by Miss Cmy. “The Lost Gate” is a very Atmospheric Track by Sophie Tiedtke taken from our 10th DCC-Records release. Upcoming is a UNIT I exclusive by Breitbandkater. “Plogoff” takes you to a journey into atmospheric deep house. The “Traumtänzer” is taken from the latest modularfield release by Oeler, who is known for his excellent percussion work as well. “Dubmin” is once again a track by Taschenrechnermusikant, taken from the “Gurkenglas EP”.We are looking forward to his upcoming release [MDF06] later this year. This tune comes from the first Modularfield release and belongs to “The Bassment”. “Licht in der Ferne” by qi.mono is a preview for the “Spätsommer Herbst EP” release, which will be the catalogue number MDF05 and is scheduled for late summer 2009. “More” is taken from the 13th DCC-Release by Breitbandkater and produced to take you back into the days, where house music was a feeling. “Static” is taken from the upcoming [MDF04] release by So I´m Jo from Australia, which is full of great electronic tunes and tasty vocal lines. Cie´s “Land in Sicht”, also taken from the various artist compilation [DCC2MDF] represents tracker music at its best. Last but not least is Tisserands track, “Not Attainable”, featuring great vocal Lines by Uwe Hell and 303 Acid Sound like back in the days. This time the great cover artwork comes from Farbfundament. He did an awesome job with an original footage by Muriel from Spain. He also designed our new and now final logo for Modularfield. We hope you enjoy the music and the new artwork as much as we did.
No need for an introduction here; by now you've most likely acquainted yourself with Revy, who has a series of Netlabel mixes in which he spotlights the labels individually. This month he's back with Stadtgruen.
The German netlabel Stadtgruen analyzes the fundamental connections between culture and nature, seeking harmony between the two by exploring the "possibilities of contemporary electronics." While the label separates its releases between natural and urban atmospheres, their styles of dub and techno still interact with each other in a very thoughtful and dynamic fashion. For a personal touch in creating this mix, I tried to form these tracks into a narrative similar to my future plans, relocating from the lush Pacific Northwest to the bustle of central Tokyo. I hope you enjoy the ride. -revy

If you haven't noticed yet, Atlanta is slowly starting to show positive signs of life within the underground music scene. Over the past few years, a lot more, newer artists are coming from within the city, as well as bringing outside talent in. In order for music communities to remain positive and growing always, not only do the people need to have some sort of common goal, but the music itself constantly needs to reinvent itself. One crew has remained high up on the charts of Proton Radio, among world-renowned djs. Warm Art delivers yet another week of techno that moves the soul. This week with Tony Parker and Jena Paradies

=============================================== Warm Art Music Presents Jena Paradies (aka Cornel Novac) [Wolf+Lamb, Vagabond ATL]
Jena moved to the US from the former Soviet republic of Moldova in 1999. Since stepping into the DJ booth, he has worked exclusively in Ableton Live, a program he seemed to have mastered with 2005's well-received Kunstformen der Natur mix. In addition to performing in and around his adopted home of Athens, Paradies has built an audience by releasing a series of mixes and MP3s on influential blogs and message boards. His driving, uncompromising sets celebrate the depth and complexity of contemporary techno while maintaining a sense of respect, responsibility, and dedication to the music itself. This past summer he mixed the Wolf + Lamb Music Label Summer Mix consisting of recent and unreleased Wolf + Lamb releases.

Sometimes I don't play on the internet. Recently it's been not as often because of no computer. Unfortunately for my friends, I come to their houses and steal their computers for hours on end. Tonight I will be DJ'ing with Mayhem and Dinovo tonight @ El Bar in Atlanta. El Bar is located underneath El Azteca on Ponce de Leon and if you haven't been before, then you are in for a treat. Thank God for Sub.Traction, or you might be forced to drink to remixes of 80s pop songs otherwise. Some club-nights in Atlanta just can't compete with us...
Alland Byallo is one of the busiest men in the San Francisco techno community. Having produced music for over 10 years, Alland releases and remixes on respected labels such as Liebe*Detail, Floppy Funk, Utensil Recordings and Dirtybird among many others.
Alland is always quite busy in the studio working hard on his own unique take on electronic dance music for his own Nightlight Music imprint and many other labels.
Alland is currently resident, graphic designer and A&R for what is arguably the one of America’s most respected and notorious techno night, [KONTROL] in San Fransisco. He also runs the label Nightlight Music.
