Bunker Podcast 53: Signal

The Bunker Podcast 53: Signal

This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. Signal is the Raster Noton supergroup trio of Alva Noto, Byetone, and Frank Bretschneider. It is a very rare treat to have them perform live, and we were honored to present them at The Bunker. Part 4 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.

Martyn @ 595 North - Atlanta tomorrow!!

I will be playing with Martyn tomorrow night here in Atlanta, alongside one of Athens hardest working djs, D:RC, and Atlanta's hardest working djs, Mayhem. The show starts promptly at 10:00pm, but you can get to the venue beforehand to unsober yourselves. If you've been paying attention to the recent rise of dubstep and the blend of house music, then you know exactly who Martyn is. With a full album release on 3024 Records, 2009 is Martyn's year, as we've already seen. See you out tomorrow, Saturday May 30th!

The Bunker Podcast 52: Byetone

This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. Byetone stepped out of his role as administrator and graphic designer of Raster Noton to deliver an amazing album last year, "The Death of a Typographer". This set features a lot of the heavy industrial material from that album. Part 3 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.

Release of the Month! [2Circles008] V/A

Very few Various Artist compilations have I heard that could deal with several moods, several feelings, several genres the way this release did. Two Circles, based out of Detroit/San Francisco, is made up primarily of two mates, Cullen Miller and Simple. Deeply rooted in techno and experimental electronic sounds, this V/A comes to us stock full of gems. MJ's MJ Himself feat. Theresa is a glitchy, yet still melodic track, while Simple's Near is a light, atmospheric look at dubby, 2-step sounds. Cullen provides us Glitzy Schizoid, which has the traditional techno drum pattern with minimalistic tones, rich drum textures and a masked groove; I Eat Vegans, however, shows a different side of the savvy producer.

All producers are in top form here. This is a release for all electronic music fans to appreciate; it's smart, sharp and all tracks, no matter what genre you might put them in, compliment each other.

Visit Two Circles on their website or by simply clicking the tab located at the top of this website.

1. MJ - MJ Himself feat. Theresa
2. Proem - Eyes Bursting Within My Skull
3. Proem - Consortion Hammer
4. Cullen Miller - I Eat Vegans

6. Kingsley Maddukka and Giriu Dvasios - Mariana's Dub

The Bunker Podcast 51: Frank Bretschneder

This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. Frank Bretschneder, also known as Komet, delivers a mind-bending set features material from one of our favorite recent albums, 2007's "Rhythm". Unfortunately Frank's stunning visuals are not a part of the recording, but the music really does speak for itself. Part 2 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.

Resident Advisor 156: Seth Troxler

Young Seth lays down some smooth summer grooves on this week's RA podcast.

The small city of Kalamazoo may lie directly in between Chicago and Detroit, but it doesn't really have much of a house and techno heritage. Seth Troxler, however, has been doing his best to change that—ever since he moved to the 313 during his high school years, showing a keen interest in all aspects of house and techno culture and steadily working on his own productions. Omar-S was the first person to give Troxler a break when he put the delicately low slung "Moment" onto FXHE's Compulation #1, and he hasn't looked back since. Appearances on Beretta Music, Esperanza and Spectral Sound followed, but his tipping point came at last year's WMC where the murky atmospheric house of "Love Never Sleeps" was pretty much unavoidable.

His clinically produced tracks might suggest that Seth is quite a serious guy, but he's keen to express his sense of humour in everything from his track titles ("Crosson Likes Poo," "Love Spray") to his dress sense (he's been known to crack out cowboy boots and short shorts once in a while). At this point, Seth had already been living in Berlin for a year, forging links with labels like Items & Things and Wagon Repair, and making the most of the city's cheap rent and non-stop party scene.

It's not just his productions that are turning heads however: Troxler's catalog of online mixes is legion, and stellar. Which is why we ask that you forget all that, as this week's RA podcast sees him craft a laid back selection of sunkissed disco, rock, folk and funk, with quite a few pleasant surprises.

Track of the Week: Bro Safari Remix

via XLR8R:

Diego "Aether" Chavez and Daniel Stanush make a kind of music not commonly associated with their part of the country (Texas). Under their A.M. Architect guise, the two combine folktronic sensibilities with downtempo beats that often stray towards hip-hop territory, and the same is true of this remix from L.A.-based producer Bro Safari.

Another great piece from Nick Weiller. Perfect for a chill day at home or lounging out by the pool.

Mix of the Month!

Another awesome installment in Revy's netlabel mix series, and this month he chose Miniscule Turn down the lights, spark a spliff and be lulled away into a utopian like environment. I don't say that about every mix! ;).

Let's take a journey into deep space with Miniscule. One great thing that first drew me into their sounds was the notion of including samples and loops with their releases, encouraging collaborations from all over the world. Clearly their take on deep and hypnotic minimal techno caught the ears of many talented remixers. For this mix I took a more analytical approach to the track selection by often mixing together works from either the same producer or the same samplepack, resulting in some nice long blends and another way to observe production style. Enjoy!

The Bunker Podcast 50: Alva Noto

This set was recorded live at The Bunker in Brooklyn on May 16, 2008. While Carsten Nikolai is very well known in the art world, he has also made quite a name for himself in the music world with his many releases as Alva Noto. Here he presents a set that features material from his "Unitxt" album. Part 1 of our 4 part Raster Noton series.

Umek on Proton Radio

The Recycled Loops label owner has pretty much done it all...opened up a world of music for his home country of Slovenia, landed an unmatchable Essential Mix, remixed for Depeche Mode to Nathan Fake and given all of us his re-occurring show on Proton Radio, named 1605.

Concept Intel MID phone

This concept Mobile Internet Device, powered by an Intel Atom Processor, seems to offer an interface that vastly differs from any of the smartphones available on the market today. But it's only fair to wonder how viable this layout is to make it past the concept phase. The common flip phone idea is redesigned to feature a third sliding plate, advertising an impressive 210 by 210 millimeter screen. The screen in the images below reflect a rectangular surface, therefore the advertising dimensions seem inaccurate. Regardless, the notion to compact the actual screen into a tight design is quite a notable concept that is far from overlooked. A secondary, highlighting feature for this concept Intel smartphone is the available rear stand for balancing. But how appealing is this type of smartphone to the general public on a popular scale? The Apple iPhone has obviously gained momentum since its introduction to the consumer market two years ago, while Blackberry and LG smartphones remain top contenders as well. These devices aren't overly complicated and geared for the screen-based fans, though. If it's any consolation, Czech Republic-based Petr Kubik announces on his porfolio site that this particular MID is the winner of the Intel competition for such a device. Only time will tell if it has the tenacity to make it into production.

Resident Advisor 155: Louderbach

Troy Pierce and Gibby Miller are blurring the lines between their respective influences on this week's RA podcast.

You might not think that a hardcore punk vocalist and minimal techno producer would be the likeliest of studio bedfellows, but Troy Pierce and Gibby Miller have forged quite the partnership with their Louderbach project. Marrying Minus man Pierce's tenebrous take on techno with Miller's gothic vocals, the duo have created an electronic pop synergy that isn't afraid to get deep and dark both musically and lyrically. Miller's began his musical career in the late '90s as vocalist in Boston-based punk band The Trouble, but the turn of the century saw him become inaugurated into the techno scene after meeting up with Troy Pierce in New York. The two struck up a friendship and have been collaborating ever since, birthing the first fruits of their collective labour on a split release for Mo's Ferry Productions.

After more collaborations with Marc Houle, Guido Schneider and Sammy Dee, Miller was formally welcomed into the Louderbach fold, and the pair set to work on what would become their debut album. Entitled Enemy Love, the record seemed to be a continuation of Pierce's previous nocturnal minimal techno outings on Underl_ne and Minus, but this year's Autumn LP is a very different beast. Miller's love of EBM, new wave and minimal synth music are clearer than ever, whilst Pierce's has found new directions to channel his love of menacing electronic sounds. This week's RA podcast sees Pierce and Miller select the pieces of music that have heavily influenced each of them, before merging them into a single genre-defying whole that represents the ingredients that make the Louderbach sound. We caught up with both members by e-mail to ask about the mix, the decision to release on Minus, and their recent video competition.

Aluminum Fly / Mystified [foot104]

foot104 cover

Found this release today while browsing around and absolutely loved it...a step beyond just experimental music. We hope you enjoy this free release from Bump Foot and Mystified.

Release notes

Another great surprise for me in 2009, since the submission from Renzu. It came from U.S.A. again : the brain behind Treetrunk Records, Mystified visited us. Treetrunk was originally collecting experimental ambient music, but now "opened the doors a bit to other genres". This time, we did too (we already have experimental material, but we expanded the range). "It is a blend of techno, ambient, drone and noise - with mostly bright sounds and circuit-bent rhythms."

[ARCH 054] Stefny - Migratory Insertion

Archipel brings us another excellent release with NYC's Stefny. Enjoy :)

Stefny - Migratory Insertion
Label: Archipel
Cat: ARCH053
Format: Digital Only

Stefny hails from Brooklyn, New York and has previously released on labels such as Addon and taken part in Archipel's Assignment 3: The Sound of Archipel. We are now pleased to bring you her axon liquifying Archipel digital debut EP "Migratory Insertion".

Everything begins to become increasingly wavy with "Anagostic Bonds" which sends rippling intricacies hurdling through your auditory nerves and inducing a vivid textural display of shapely oscillations and cresting swells of glowing and frothing molten metals.

"Flight" dives even deeper with a very percussive and rubbery multi-layered sheet of extraterrestrial fabric drifting and rolling with life through fluid phosphene scenery while "Fallin For" slips into more funky stomping grounds with literal undercurrents of flowing water where each shimmering reflection is a slice of vocalization and where tubular melodies effortlessly slink through the stream.

Tracklisting:

1. Flight (7:23)
2. Anagostic Bonds (8:32)
3. Fallin For (9:01)

This release is now available for FREE! If you wish to support the artists, you can buy it your favorite online shops such as WhatPeoplePlay and Beatport.com
