Stefny: April 2009 promo

Stefny was born and raised in California. She discovered her love for house music while living in Los Angeles in the early 90s. She had the best of both worlds; LA's harder sounds to SF's deeper funky stuff (from Ron D. Core - The Wicked Crew). After moving to Denver in 1997 she began DJing, delving into many different styles of music including techno, house, breaks, hard trance, and drum n bass [sometimes working several styles into the same set!]. Stef's abilities were noted very quickly on the scene and soon she was playing numerous clubs and raves throughout the Colorado area. As her popularity grew, she gained resendencies and a nomination for best female DJ at Denver's first annual dance music awards. In 2002, Stefny relocated to New York with the desire to bring her talent to a wider audience. Immediately, she hooked up with the NYC's Drum n Bass Crew, Direct Drive and became the first and only crossover jungle/ house resident DJ. Shortly thereafter she met MC linzee and became part of the all-female collective, Sister NYC. While playing with these two crews have brought stef recognition throughout the NYC underground. She has also played at some of New York's larger venues such as, Avalon (former Limelight), Spirit (former Twilo) and Roxy. DJ Stefny's style can be described as diverse, funky and energetic, guaranteed to rock any dance floor. In 2005 she finished her first remix, The El Gato Drum Dub, of 'Oh Snap!'by Nick Chacona and Anthony Mansfield, Hector Works . Currently she is working hard on an EP for the French distibuter and label group, Cyber Production! Stay tuned!

Influences:
Pink Floyd, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Led Zeppelin,The Cure, Metallica, Depeche Mode, The Doors, Mom, ALL 70's eighties and early nineties electronic music, Funky Techno Tribe, The Wicked Crew, Dub Tribe Sound System, Frankie Bones, Adam X, Soul Slinger, Diesel Boy, Ak1200, Pish Posh, Invisible Scratch Pickles and lots others movin me on the dance floor!

[ARCH 053] Rayuela - Non Disperdere

Rayuela - Non Disperdere
Label: Archipel
Cat: ARCH053
Format: Digital Only
Sounds like: long, textures with slow techno beat, really heady

Bubbling up from subterranean oceanic depths of Kalimari, this time with an album for Archipel, is Rayuela who brings us "Non Disperdere" which overflows with exceptional detail and intricacy.

"Wegt" and "Ushan" ripple delicately causing a flutter of refracted knots of light on tenth dimensional walls which crease and arch like metal being folded into itself at the super dense core of a distant pulsar. "Trama Celeste" and title track "En Vivo" share bodies built from ever changing glossy plasticized metallic polyhedra who's vertices are illuminated with fizzling phosphorescence while "Anagrame" constantly rearranges itself into an infinitum of self-transforming tessellations which spread out into an innumerable depth of layers of varying, glowing and spectral translucency.

"Hydrae" and "Non Disperdere" step in and create a vast and tingling carpet of atmospheric electro-magnetic discharges warbling above endless mileage of chilled crystalline forestry which radiates quivering clustered spines of light when filled with the curling colours from above.

Tracklisting:
1. Wegt (13:41)
2. Trama Celeste (12:52)
3. En Vivo (11:38)
4. Hydrae (16:26)
5. Ushan (14:56)
6. Anagramme (10:29)
7. Non Disperdere (13:37)

Touane @ Bazzaar: Tonight in Atlanta!

We're looking forward to seeing Touane perform live tonight at Bazzaar! Check out one of his promo mixes below to get a feel for the night!

Touane is Marco Tonni, born in 1979 in Rimini, a tourist-choked seaside town in northern Italy. After playing bass and guitar in rock bands during his youth, he began to experiment with electronic music at 17, creating music to reconfigure the incomplete memories of his favourite songs into a new and signature sound.

2005 was the year of his debut 12” “Afasia”, with the release of his first singles, which were charted by Djs such as Troy Pierce, Falko Brocksieper, Jeremy Caulfield and Steve Bug. He also released, “Awake,” who got him good attention from magazines and music lovers all over Europe. He started touring Europe, playing cities such as Madrid, Moscow, and Rome, while simultaneously refining his studio and his live show performance ceaselessly.

If this first year of productions marked a strong but still discrete entrance into the European music scene, the year 2006 seen the definitive recognition of his talents: at first with his top-charting single Bassic, which was licensed to the Fabric Live Cd mixed by Tiefschwarz and for the U.S. magazine XLR8R Berlin Issue Compilation. This was followed by more releases on Dumb-Unit, Trenton, Regular, and finally two more singles on Persona. Spree Baptism and Prosa have been suggesting clearly the path he wanted to follow, taking his sound signature production techniques far from genre categorization and a step above the sometimes excessive monotony of certain minimal techno.

2007 was mostly touring for Marco, as he crossed both sides of the Atlantic bringing his unique sound to US, Canada and Japan, he can finally reckon to have played in most of best clubs of the western world. Still he kept actively producing, releasing a new album and a couple of singles for his home label Persona where is took on managing the label. More releases and remixes on Trenton, Curle, Lan Muzic and Liebe*Detail. This big musical output granted him great press feedback, getting extended features, video interviews and a constantly increasing presence on several electronic music blogs and podcasts towards the globe. As of now, Marco is still deep in the studio collaborating with some other musician and alone to his advancement and to new music, following his ideal of spontaneity and unleashing his creativity in always new ways.

Pheek - Live Promo

JP became interested in acid house in the late ’80s and raves in early ’90s, inspiring him to DJ his own radio shows in Sherbrooke, QuĆ©bec. From his college years to university, he played techno, house and anything exciting to people whose ears weren’t as close to the ground.

Upon moving to Montreal in 1997 to study computer science, JP met Mateo Murphy and found they shared similar musical interests. After performing a show with Gez Varley, Mateo and JP decided to work on a live concept of their own, based on improvising beats on the fly and mixing in other synthesized sonic textures.

It was at this point that JP adopted the name of Pheek after a Richie Hawtin/Plastikman performance at Medialounge, a show that would forever change his perspective on music.

After further honing their live show together, Pheek and Mateo opened for Chain Reaction at the FCMM in 1999. They were spotted by Hautec and offered to release a 12", marking a turning point in their fledgling careers.

The few years that followed saw proposed releases on Hybrid Structure and collaborations with Mitchell Akiyama on various projects – a creative period that proved a catalyst for JP’s later success.

The next pivotal point in Pheek’s career was meeting Ɖloi Brunelle and subsequently being invited to join to the Epsilonlab media collective. JP played with them since the very first night of their existence and for almost every show to follow. His first release for Epsilonlab, 2002’s Paysages Matriciels, was a critical success and was nominated for Quebec’s prestigious ADISQ music awards.

Another milestone was the label Minus who noticed Pheek's demo and Richie Hawtin who started playing his music along with Magda. That kind of feedback from major DJ made him move forward in his production. Then he got in contact with labels such as Contexterrior and Telegraph with who he released some material.

Omar S to DEMF: Piss Off!

XLR8R brings us another internet-stirring article with Omar S on his feelings of DEMF this year, and who can blame him?! The same Detroit based festival notorious for its homecoming feel for artists who have decided to pursue their music outside of the city has included, what same feel, "the same ol' linuep" of techno meets mainstream. With Everyday-is-Burning-Man DJ Bassnectar and Los Angeles Glitch poppers, the Glitch Mob, added to this year's lineup, you have to wonder what DJs who remain in Detroit have to say...

"The man known as Omar S, buried so deep in the underground for the past decade that few in the Detroit technopolis have seen him or know how to find him, is inching toward the surface.

Suddenly, the cagey, reclusive, combative, and calculatedly funny Alex Omar Smith is virtually everywhere, granting interviews to journalists representing magazines he’s never heard of, getting chunks of the huge catalog of his homegrown FXHE label distributed on Beatport, recording new tunes, engineering others’ tracks, and releasing re-worked versions of his largely unknown classics to the world via London’s Fabric mix CD series.

In print, Smith comes off like a mean ol’ nasty bastard—profane and bitter, he bitches about the desperate state of club music, not just in Detroit but all across the USA. He rarely plays in his hometown and says flat-out he would reject an invitation to play at Movement, the city’s annual electronic music festival. “Fuck no to that,” he offers. “If they haven’t invited me already, I don’t need 'em. They can go to hell.”

But smiles and chuckles emerge after Smith’s little tantrums, which he says he uses to get a rise out of people and wake them up. “People have become so arrogant, you can’t tell them shit,” he says. “They won’t respond to anything different unless you fuck with their heads with some off-the-wall shit. I need to do my own hype, man.”

Get him talking about what inspired him to create his own personal sound factory in a modest house on Detroit’s far north side and he gushes like a little kid. Smith grew up in nearby Conant Gardens, an extraordinary square-mile area that produced such talents as Amp Fiddler, Slum Village, Frank-n-Dank, and Platinum Pied Pipers. As a youth, he was thrilled to the marrow by Detroit’s rich musical legacy.

“Man, it was Motown and Levi Stubbs—may he rest in peace—the greatest voice ever produced in Detroit,” says Smith about the Four Tops’ singer. “It was P-Funk and Prince … then Inner City, ‘Big Fun.’ Before Basic Channel it was Kevin Saunderson and [late mastering engineer] Ron Murphy that started all that dub [techno] shit.”

He says it like he knows it, because he does. He was there—he refuses to say how old he is (“Just write, ‘Between 20 and 40’”)—in the '90s at Detroit house parties, getting schooled on the dancefloor by Kenny Dixon Jr., Theo Parrish, Scott Grooves, and Mike Huckaby, processing drums, basslines, and melodies in his head, plotting new directions for the psychedelic soul-funk tech-house dubs of the future. What would emerge were tracks like “Just Ask the Lonely,” an homage to Motown joy and melancholy delivered as an exhilarating 10-minute rhythmic skip overlaid with gorgeous jazz piano riffs; or the spacier, tougher “Blade Runner,” which suggests the science-fiction fetish of the electro-fied 1980s without appearing dated.

Along the way he became a guardian angel to young (Seth Troxler, Luke Hess) and neglected (Malik Pittman) local talents who, like himself, have had to find love and respect far from the city that shaped their sound.

Why is that, Alex? What makes Detroit the fucked-up, schizoid, yet uniquely innovative musical incubator that it is?

“Oh, I don’t know, man,” he says, laughing. “That’s a Derrick May question. I can’t answer that. Ask him. I just do what I do.""

WHISPERLINK
//red cedar recs // abstract logic recordings // Atlanta Dubstep//

Jules Whisperlink is man-who like a ninja- posses many different musical skills. Starting off as a bass player turned hip hop producer and emcee from the true school-he also is in Suntoucher,Atlanta's first live future dub band,as well as spinning dubstep out as a dj with the Atlanta Dubstep Crew.Mr.Whisperlink is also in a two man Dubstep project with Phive Starr called Heavy Machine.Their first ep on ALR recordings is tearing the world a new one. With past experience as an engineer at The Zone-he got to work with some of the A's top dogs like Bonecrusher,Lil Jon and David Banner (before crunk ran the world) allowing Whisperlink to learn how to make it bang in your trunk. This also gave him a sweet tooth for those sticky southern drawl type lyrics mixed with dubstep bass lines that will take out your whole platoon.Mr.Whisperlink brought forth the idea of conquering the dubstep genre from a dirty south point of view and continues to promote this idea in a speaker box near you.

DISTAL
// On The Edge Records // Atlanta Dubstep //

Born 45 million light-years from the Milky Way in a barred spiral galaxy. Distal has come to planet Earth seeking refuge from the harsh condition of the colliding Antennae Galaxy. He spent much time on the mainland throughout his life, but due to the increasing pressure of human upheaval has recently decided to retreat to the ocean.

Because of his non-tradtional approach to Dubstep and Techno, Distal has been forced to take a few risks, but along the way has created a very specific sound. Pulling from Techno, Broken Bewats, Gangster Rap, and pop culture, Distal has already gained the attention of many well-respected shamans and pioneers working in Dubstep and Techno. First getting airplay from Bunzero on his FOB show on Sub.Fm, as well as being played on Climate Control radio UK; and most recently accepting a forthcoming deal with "On The Edge Records" a sister label of the already endowed "Z Audio Records". Distal is well on his way to becoming a leader in Dubstep and Techno.
