[ZIMMER040] v/a - #1 the principle of mentalism

Another top notch release from one of Westfalen's veteran netlabels. While the release as a whole hits upon different moods of electronica, I have to note Octad's "Above and Below" track. Deep and minimal while remaining light and jazzy at the same time...

This principle embodies the understanding that everything in the universe is created by thought or mind. There is nothing that exists in the material universe where this is not the case.

The great Edgar Cayce, in his Universal Mind channelings, would over and over again say "thoughts are things". The entire universe was created by the thought of God. We, as God’s sons and daughters, create our reality both metaphysically and physically by the power of our minds. The great law of spiritual psychology is that it is our thought that creates our reality. Everything that exists is spirit. Matter is just densified spirit. Spirit is just refined matter. All is just energy.

Paris vs. Steve

No doubt by now you've probably heard rumors about a fight breaking out during one of Steve Angello's sets at Liv Nightclub last night...with Paris Hilton! Regardless of how you view Steve Angello as a dj and producer, he is still one of us. How much fun would you have had with Paris if she had asked you to play a Daft Punk track? Her myspace blog cites a Daft Punk request while RA alludes to a more Madonna-like request. Hopefully some hipster punk took a video...

CIRCOLOCO

Internationally renowned for their DC 10 Ibiza antics, Circo Loco is one of the most infamous party brands the world over.

Every Monday morning from June to October hedonistic clubbers are lured to DC10 for the carnival-like atmosphere of Circo Loco, the all-day long afterhours started by Italians Antonio and Andrea Pelino back in 1999. Circo Loco means crazy circus and it's the party where the beautifully wasted come together in Ibiza. Besides the colorful characters who make Circo Loco what it is, there are also its resident DJs who spin underground house and techno alongside the international guest DJs who hound Andrea and co. for an invitation to play.

Sorry we are Circoloco!

[Miga31] Texas Sci-Fi "Figures / Frecuencies" + [M

The new Miga´s release is a compact proposal of Texas Sci-Fi project, a group based on experimentation, frequencies exploration, analogic errors and the synchronization between audio and video rhythms. For this complete release, [Miga31] "Figures / Frequencies", they has composed a collection of pieces created from pictoric works of minimalist artists from the twentieth century.

We also accompain this audio reference with the visual piece [Miga_v15] "10 x10 x2 Cubes in blue", that acts like a window allowing us to focus on the work of this interesting group whose maximum advantage is been reflected in its powerfull live act.

[Miga31] Texas Sci-Fi "Figures / Frecuencies"
[Miga_v15] Texas Sci-Fi "10 x10 x2 Cubes in blue"

Texas Sci-fi is formed at the very beginning of 2008 in Terrassa, a suburban town on the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain. The members of the band are three, Juanjo Fernández and Miki Martínez, two friends who shared an Indie pop project not long ago, together with Miki’s brother Rafa Martinez.

They all work also in other parallel projects with which they have released some albums for several Spanish and international labels. With Texas Sci-fi they put together their best to create, this time, an audiovisual project full of strength, minimalism forcefulness and analogue experimentation. They use a long list of analogue synthesizers in their performances to doing so -Moog, Korg, Roland- combined with other vintage machinery that injects a direct input in the creation of amazing live visuals.

As they use to say, they make “dance minimal sounds with experimental doses of impossible frequencies, white noise, clicks, cuts an bleeps”. A complex sound arisen from footswitches and other electronic stuff that gives shape to a perfect audiovisual synchronisation. The name of their first album is “Cold Landscapes”, a conceptual work for which they create original soundtracks for different cities, always trying to seek the parallelism with geometrical shapes.

deFocus.03 - Yuki Yaki

We absolutely have fallen in love with Revy's netlabel spotlight mixes. The past two spots have been on Miga and Archipel Netlabels. Enjoy the third!

"For the third installment I've dug a bit deeper into the sounds of Yuki Yaki. Their catalog of glitch, dub, and deep tech references proved to be a perfect opportunity to slow down, mellow out, and gradually lose touch with time in this mix. Often disregarding tempo, the loops of clicks, cuts, and sublime pads flow and stumble over eachother with complete freedom, sometimes forming disorienting results, shifting and rearranging the thought process of any close listener. Yuki Yaki, thank you for these beautiful works!"

When 4 great minds get together and invite their close friends for a party, there can only be one outcome… ‘Everything In Between…’

Leftroom return to Miami for their annual WMC party, but this time they have brought some friends with them. Leftroom has been at the forefront of quality underground dance music for the last three years and are still
one of the UK leading labels. Leftroom head honcho Matt Tolfrey has been hard at work in the studio recently, and it has paid off with a forthcoming release on German mega-imprint Cocoon with fellow Leftroom

Wolf + Lamb bring their party mastery to Miami for the first time. In 6 years of being New York underground dance legends, the duo have managed to open a venue, the Marcy Hotel, a digital label, and most recently a
sold-out vinyl label. They bring with them their soulful DJ sets, which have been a consistent highlight of their parties years.

Droog are a fast-rising DJ collective based in Los Angeles. Over the last three years, Droog have attempted to make a mark with the residency in one of the biggest US clubs - Avalon Hollywood, where they've played alongside everybody from Tiefschwarz and Richie Hawtin, to M.A.N.D.Y., Booka Shade and Josh Wink, as well as throwing a succession of one off parties that have brought some of the best and freshest artists to Los Angeles, some for the first time (Dinky, Martin Landsky, Konrad Black, Matt Tolfrey, Phonique etc.). As the latest project, Droog will be launching their label of electronic house and techno, Culprit, at this year's WMC.

Entrance is to Everything In Between only which is upstairs at the venue. There will be seperate entrances for both parties

Resident Advisor 147: DJ Pete

The Scion and Hard Wax man gets low on this week's RA podcast.

Peter Kuschnereit is a man with some serious techno credentials. Not only has he worked for Berlin's much lauded Hard Wax record shop since 1991, he's also responsible for the first ever release on Basic Channel sub-label Chain Reaction as Scion alongside René Löwe (AKA Vainqueur). National service in concurrent periods forced the duo to produce solo, culminating for Kuschnereit in the release of his Session Elements album as Substance. But the Substance project was put on the backburner when Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald decided that Scion were the right people to represent Basic Channel in the live arena, and the duo became early adopters of Ableton Live to create 2002's Scion Arrange and Process Basic Channel Tracks mix CD.

Kuschnereit was already well regarded as a DJ at that point, sharing a residency with Surgeon at the old Tresor club during the '90s, a partnership which was recently rekindled at December's Bleep43 party at London's Corsica Studios. Revellers who've already seen the man in action will know of Pete's broad musical palette, but for this week's RA podcast, the Hard Wax man has offered up a kinetic and hypnotic synergy of techno and dubstep. We spoke with Pete by e-mail to ask him about the mix, his passion for dubstep and his forthcoming solo material.

R U PETALOS?!?

Last night I had the pleasure of opening for a band I have enjoyed for some time now, Atlanta/Athens-based electronic group STS9. The show went great and it felt good playing for a crowd that might not be as familiar with the type of music I play. In relation, I made a quick mash of two favorite tracks of mine to create an all new favorite. I took Omar Salgado's piece Petalos from his release on Unfound Sound's compilation, Aires Buenos and combined it with everyone's favorite creep/comedy pairing...none other than Ambivalent's R U OK, out on Minus Records. Hope you enjoy this! Should have recorded set up soon from the show.

Wolf + Lamb: new release + mix

Brooklyn label owners, djs and all around minimal perfectionists Wolf + Lamb, or Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi, have created quite a surrounding for themselves. From weekly events that have put them on the dance map to an exclusive and well-designed lounge of the same name inside the Marcy Hotel, Wolf+Lamb are proud to introduce their first release on their label, Brooklynn EP. What better way to promote a new release than with a new mix!

Wolf and Lamb web

Very few producers or labels bother to show you the negative feedback that they receive from DJs, producers or publications, but Wolf and Lamb have proven in their three vinyl releases thus far that they're far from a normal imprint. As a result, gems like "Overall this EP is maybe a little too abstract for my taste," "WLM003 EP sounded too deep for me" and "i heard this guy smells funny" are all added to the pile of hosannas. We'll have to take Seth Troxler's word on how Lee Curtiss smells, but the rest make sense.

Wolf + Lamb's debut EP for their own imprint will be too abstract for some people's tastes. Then again, if a track called "Idiosyncratic" didn't have an uncomfortable groove based on a three piano note line, garbled horn samples and a kick drum that holds the whole thing together, you'd probably be mighty disappointed. And if "Therapist" didn't have a creepy voiceover asking you if there was something on your mind, what kind of therapist would it be?

"Must Be Brooklynn" might be even better (and deeper) with lovely synth blurts that cut right into the heart of its relentless, sexy groove, but Shaun Reeves' edit of "If U Had" is the winner here, sounding exactly deep and abstract enough for our taste. Its drop-down bassline approaches the addictiveness of Stefan Goldmann's "Sleepy Hollow" and is joined by a dusty vocal sample that adds a much needed human element to his disembodied marvel. - Resident Advisor

Resident Advisor 146: Culoe de Song

Culolethu "Culoe De Song" Zulu came to RA's attention at last year's Red Bull Music Academy. Armed with a list of "artists to watch," the young South African DJ/producer was the one that stole our correspondent's heart after a sterling DJ set of deep, Afro-inclined house at Barcelona's Macarena club on a Sunday night.

It was the first time that Culoe had stepped outside of his home country, but it certainly won't be the last. Since the Academy, DJs and producers around the world have started to ring up the teenager: He's working on a remix of Reggie Dokes, has a single lined up for Innervisions and plenty of DJ performances set for later in the year in Europe.

In his RA podcast, Culoe recreates the special vibe on that sweaty night in Barcelona, mixing together a selection of some of his favorite tunes that have an Afro edge, and concluding it in epic fashion with a pair of his own productions.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

I recorded the mix at my mother label, Soulistic Music in Johannesburg. I did it live with the DJR 400, it was an adventure! It was my first full set with that mixer, I'd never used it before. Blackcoffee, the father of the label, came with it from Europe not long
ago.

Can you tell us a little about the mix?

Well this mix was more spiritual, I did it having my soul as guidance for the selection, it was random at the moment of the session. It's what I was feeling at the time and includes my new upcoming offerings and unreleased pieces.

The last time we saw you at the Red Bull Music Academy you still had to take your final school exams. How did it go? And what have you been up to?

Well I gotta be honest with this one, it didn't go well in terms of my finals, but it wasn't much of a surprise to me because 2008 was the beginning of my journey, my career. I hardly had full focus on my books, the soul thing just kept me running... but our successes lie in different paths and I believe some things happen for a reason. I've been also busy networking with a lot of people, to try put up my big plan.

Any travel plans for 2009?

I'm very much looking forward to set foot in Europe again this year. I have a few gigs in Italy, Finland, the Netherlands and also a big one in Barcelona for the Sonar Festival!

What are you up to next?

I'm working on a couple of projects, such as the Reggie Dokes "Let Me Go" remixes on Boddhi Satva's Offering Recordings. And I've also been busy with a project with Mzee (Ocha Records), so I'm really looking forward to the time ahead.

[ARCH 052] Marc Neyen - What Is Time To You?

Marc Neyen - What Is Time To You?
Label: Archipel
Cat: ARCH052
Format: Digital

Tracklisting:

1. To You (10:15)
2. Time Or What (10:30)
3. To You (Eric Johnston Remix) (8:20)

Marc Neyen makes a comeback with his third hallucinatory charm "What is time to you" and takes a more sparse and still just as deep and funk inducing approach.

"Time or What" spreads open a volume of cosmically warped and undulating textures which jazzily form an extremely heady valence which slowly extends itself and drives into an endlessly changing tapestry of inner ear imagery. "To You" begins directly and delicately whilst slowly unravelling itself to reveal flowing streams of molten metallic noises coiling up around a core of slowly wobbling warmth to form a fluid and constantly growing cord of lively sensations while Eric Johnston remixes it into a vat of intricacies down to the microbial scale and steadily heaving low end sector spotted with extraterrestrial percussive accents.

Florian Meindl: Studio Mix

Florian bought his first record at the age of 14, it was a house tune (Armand Van Helden - you don't know me) and ever since then there has been nothing else except for the music in his head. Born in Upper Austria , the 21 year old DJ has completed a higher technical school but prefers devoting his time and energy to the creation of the most perfect beats. Florians career began at the age of 16. This is when he beagan as a supporting act to Claude Young, Gayle San, Ricardo Villalobos. Work with the aforementioned proved successful and in no time Florian was playing all over Austria.

Dark Audio brings us a fresh new studio mix from Florian for the month of March. Enjoy.
