The Return of Losing It @ WMC

Want to hear Matthew Dear playing all-new unreleased music from his Audion guise? You'll only have one shot at this year's WMC.

Spectral Sound, Dear's label home, will be hosting him and a number of other Spectral stars for a party that they're calling "The Return of Losing It." Kate Simko, Lee Curtiss, Seth Troxler, Konrad Black and Clark Warner will all be on hand to support Dear in his endeavor. The nights festivities will be set to occur at Grass—a venue located in Miami's design district—which seems in line with Spectral's dedication to the merging of top-drawer design and music and they've promised "full range Dynacord audio" (yes!) and "artful atmospheric installations" (huh?) to help seal the deal.

DeFocus.02 - Miga

The second episode of deFocus delves into the works of Miga. With a vast and diverse body of work ranging from dreamy ambient glitch to dark introspective techno and electro, it was a challenge for me to compile their story into two hours, but one I felt well worth undertaking. Taking a step back from my usual mixing style, I often avoided a lot of dense layering of different rhythms to let these intricate tracks show more of their own unique personality. Also, with this being my first serious attempt as a cross-genre compilation, I took the opportunity to experiment more with tempo modulations and more time stretch warping, performed on the fly without any post production, as usual. What unfolded during this recording was a mind boggling exploration into the brains and hearts of these talented artists, which I hope is as much fun to listen to as I had putting it together.

Big thanks to Miga for their thought provoking efforts!

[pz009] MINORSCENE - LA PARTE DE LA VIA

Minorscene brings us three more brilliant tracks on the La Parte EP. La Primera gives us a nice, warm and bouncy tech-house track that works well from start to finish. La Segunda promotes the same vibe as La Primera, getting a hint darker. La Tercera finishes the EP with a bang, haunting the listener with a unique barrage of drumming that most certainly will stick around after the track has finished.

Konrad Black tonight in Atlanta!

Konrad Black has been involved in DJing, producing and performing music for the past 10 years. A constant throughout his career is the signature mix of dirty bass threads with atmospheric sounds, emerging from his roots in Drum and Bass and Hip Hop.

DEMF:
http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=TCpH4zAIHW4&feature=related

After his first release on Formation Records in the UK influence's such as Maurizio and Klang inspired more minimal sounds, and in 1998, a meeting with Swayzak in Vancouver led to 'Greycale' for Slow Building in 1999. From there Konrad went on to record a number of tracks on 240 volts, including the "Nails" or alternatively titled "Heavy Metal Withdrawal" EP as well as the "Busting Down the Door with a Shotgun" EP.

After moving to London and working with Ed Rush and Optical's prestigious D&B label Virus Recordings (which ironically coincided with his deter out of Drum and Bass), Konrad recorded the track 'White Cigarettes' for Swayzak's 240 Volts Compilation released that year.

Concurrently Konrad worked with March 21st of Circlesquare on the 'Headgear Project', releasing 'Believers Goodbye'. This project culminated in collaboration with Swayzak for the track 'In the Car Crash' on the seminal album 'Dirty Dancing', released in 2002.

From there he went on to work on Circlesquare's album 'Pre-Earthquake Anthems' for London based Output Recordings. Likewise, Headgear's final joint production then was the Unkle remix of 'In a State'.

In 2004 Konrad then formed Wagon Repair Recordings with Mathew Jonson, Graham Boothby and Jesse Fisk. He continued his wide panorama of sound on his first release on the label: 'Draconia', which enjoyed critical success internationally, followed by club hit 'medusa smile' , both top ranked in playlists of opnion leaders like ricardo villalobos, richie hawtin, steve bug, loco dice or tiga.
This is only the beginning of things to come, as labelmanager, DJ, producer and performer Konrad Black will show very soon…

Resident Advisor 143: Thomas Brinkmann

Cologne experimentalist Thomas Brinkmann bangs it out on this week's RA podcast.Cologne's Thomas Brinkmann needs no introduction. As one of techno's foremost experimental minds, he's bridged the gap between the conceptual and the physical with seminal releases such as Studio 1 - Variationen and Concept 1:96:VR. Using a dual-armed turntable he crafted himself, Brinkmann transformed Wolfgang Voigt and Richie Hawtin's releases into haunting, beautiful and danceable masterpieces of minimal techno and, as one writer termed them, "key works of modern art."Since the mid-'90s, Brinkmann has spent much of his time focused on his Max Ernst label, an imprint that has churned out some of the most fascinating post-electronic albums of the past decade by artists like TBA Empty, Post Industrial Boys and Brinkmann himself. On his RA podcast, though, Brinkmann goes straight for the feet, unveiling a wild ride through funky minimalism with a hypnotic quality that stays with you long after the last beat drops. From Michael Jackson remixes to those aforementioned Post Industrial Boys, it's one you won't soon forget. We sent the elusive Brinkmann questions and a request for a tracklisting via e-mail. We'll update this space as soon as he is able to respond.

EZoo w/DJ Ana + Dawnrock

EZOO

Harry Klein's DJ Ana and Ilian Tape's Dawnrock have come together to form Elektronik Zoo, or EZOO.DE, an internet-based radio show. Over the past year they've had guests grace the waves, such as Staffan Linzatti, Jorge Savoretti, Seph, Dapayk, Alex Smoke, Sashca Funke and many, many more. While this may seem like just another minimal radio show to some, it's definitely a whole lot more. Sounds like dreams, these two German djs prove why Munich and Germany as a whole continue to shine through as the mecca for modern Techno and progression in dance music.

I will be the first to admit that I had not heard the name Anthea in regards to techno before this week. After listening to her Ibiza Voice Podcast, I won't be forgetting it anytime soon either. The Phonica label artist is from London and has quite a natural touch to mixing so it seems, so we are excited to see what she has in store for us forthcoming :)

2562 - February 21st @ Bazzaar - Atlanta

With so many happenings in and around the city, you have to ask yourself if you're going to the best of the best. This Saturday, Atlanta Dubstep presents, for the very first time in Atlanta, 2562. The Netherlands producer has been the center of discussion of dubstep, techno, house, minimal, dnb and many many more circles for the past couple years, with his brilliantly laced productions. So again...you have to ask yourself: Do you want to just go out and listen to the same old jukebox-style music...or do you want an experience?

*****This event is brought to you by ATL Dubstep*****

Forget everything you know about Dubstep. Forget everything you know about Techno. Netherlands-based producer and DJ 2562 has aided in the reshaping of two ever-so-popular edm genres, and the buzz around his mixes and productions are growing rapidly day in and day out. Dave Huismans not only has one of the most obscure guises, he also has one of the most obscure sounds in such a uniform way. He's played with the likes of Appleblim, Shackleton, Modeselektor, Kode 9, Digital Mystikz, Skream, Loefah and more. His tracks have received accrediting from djs such as Martyn, Mary Anne Hobbs and more. 2008 saw Dave's album release under 2562, Aerial, under rave reviews from popular sites such as resident advisor and sounds of the universe, among others. You can also find other gem releases from Huismans under previous monikers A Made Up Sound and Dogdaze

[NET001]Nettare - Various (Italian Netlabels)

It's no secret that Italy has been coming much correct lately within the minimal scene. With bigger labels such as Italo Business releasing tracks by Umek and Dandi e Ugo, there are also quite a few netlabels, such as Silenzio and Tonimusic, with artists like Topper + Hugo putting out some of their best work. At the end of 2008, the netlabels came together under Nettare to showcase some of the best tunes of the year. Please enjoy this release and leave feedback if you like it :)

Joel Mull: February Promo

Sometimes getting caught up in the latest trends, the latest sounds, the latest latest, I often forgot how much a well mixed set of pure techno can be. And not to say that Joel's sets aren't full of the latest and the best, because they most certainly are. For February, Joel lets us know that he is just as serious as he has always been. At with no surprises here either, Joel has always been a man of consistency in the world of electronic music. Since the early 90s, the young Swede has been turning heads with releases on Loop, Adam Beyer's Drumcode and eventually his own label, InsideRecords, formed in 1997. Strap in and enjoy this promo from Joel!

Resident Advisor 142: Josh Wink

This week's RA mix comes to us exclusively from Josh Wink. Josh recently released a new album.
Philly DJ/producer Josh Wink gets a little deeper on this week's RA podcast. Here's the full scoop and below is the mix!

It's been nearly twenty years since Josh Wink first stepped onto the electronic music scene with the ethnic hip-house of "Tribal Confusion," a track produced alongside fellow Philadelphian house-head King Britt. It's been a whirlwind ever since. Wink became a worldwide star with his ubiquitous acid house hits of the mid-90s before traversing between techno, breakbeat and drum & bass on his numerous releases throughout the rest of the decade. And, in the '00s, he even embraced the sound of modern minimal techno and found his way onto M_nus' min2MAX compilation.

Wink's RA podcast sees him with his finger on the pulse as per usual, mixing up recent and upfront cuts of a slightly deeper persuasion than you'd expect from one of his regular club sets.

deFocus : Archipel mix

deFocus is a monthly mix experiment that explores the catalogs of various netlabels via freeform audio collage. The first installment showcases a very inspirational label for me, Archipel. My ears were changed forever just after hearing their first releases, being one of the first instances where I felt I could really hear the human side of electronic music. It's been a pleasure to see this label evolve over the years, not only in forward thinking sound crafting, but also in graphic design, business model, and their overall approach to the concept of a digital label.
In regards to the mixing style, I have taken a different approach than usual, applying Archipel's idea of a "musical sandbox." A common criticism of mixing with software is that it sounds too "perfect" when your beatmatching is done for you automatically. In response I have deliberately smashed the grid by using many tracks as textures, often without regard for their tempo, time signature, or phrasing, and often utilizing time stretching fx. The end results are disorienting unpredictable rhythms and unusual tonal combinations that were totally unique to the moment of the recording. Nothing was prearranged or planned other than the order of the tracks triggered, which is chronological by release #, and no edits were made to the final mix. So in many cases the music presented is not exactly as the artists intended, but instead transforming into a new listening experience. If you like what you hear I highly recommend downloading the original tracks from Archipel's site.
Much respect goes out to the Archipel crew for all their hard work...and please enjoy the mix!

Ibiza Voice Podcast: Johnny D

Johnny D mixes are like a journey through your soul. Deep rhythms, minimal grooves and always inspiring. This week he brings us another top quality mix with thanks going to Ibiza Voice Podcast series for bringing it to us.

As the son of Eritrean refugees, Johannes Debese a.k.a. Johnny D. became acquainted with a wide array of music styles at an early age – from Tigrinya, the Eritrean music of his heritage, to hip-hop, funk and soul. During the breakbeat-craze in the Rhein-Neckar delta he first came into contact with electronic music at the age of thirteen, soon afterward deciding to take to the turn tables. His first electronic music sets at modest breakbeat events followed, and Johnny D. quickly developed into a versatile artist active in the Mannheim Collective. He met Ray Okpara in 1999 by the good grace of their mutual hip-hop interest. They would both later organize the Rajo-Music house parties together with Nick Curly and spin all at the Loft Club in Ludwigshafen.

Johnny D. was also active in the Rhein-Neckar party scene as one of the co-founders (Ray Okpara, Federico Molinari, Nekes)of the Mannheim Zoo Club, which quickly rose to wild popularitywith its rotating line up of national and international acts, and local DJs.

Johnny D’s style continued to develop under the influence of minimal electronic music, prompting him to try his hand at producing. His musical versatility makes it difficult to define his style, but one can safely locate his music and vinyl selection somewhere between deep-house, minimal, and techno. The outcome of this spectrum of styles is his own style which is arising itself on vinyl and affectionately arranged live acts. His first release Manipulation and Gualia came out on Oslo rec., the label of his 2 old friends Federico Molinari and Nekes, in june 07. So another chapter was opened for him as musican which he will release now on further.......

Seth Troxler @ Halcyon - NYC

Seth's set @ Halcyon in December of 2008. Another impressive set from the American turned German resident. Brought to you by dailysession.com.

Gui Boratto et al @ Rote Sonne

Gui Boratto has a new album coming out soon, and he's sounding as good as ever behind the decks. Here he is live @ Rote Sonne Club in Munich over the weekend w/Alex Flatner and Scharrenbroich.

Cerebral 2 Aftermath - Octane Coffee Bar

The sleek coffee bar at howell mill + marietta street is a perfect place for any type of gathering. From street art to fashion to electronic music, the setting is always intimate yet the vibe always thick. After a quick dinner at the westside Six Feet Under, we headed to Octane which seemed to already be alive and well. Threv was rockin a laptop set of some of his newest of the new. He later told me that evening that the array of sounds we had heard previously had all been created since the new year began. No space was interrupted with the elaborate setup (laptop space, turntables, keyboards and other gear), allowing for people to do as they please. The crowd was very diverse, from those on their own personal laptops finishing school work to a small party celebrating the marriage of a couple soon to be. Photography dotted the walls, from pictures of midtown Atlanta to famous graveyards in Paris, FR. Whether the sounds were experimental or uniform, the drink of choice black coffee or dark beer, it was a good time for all.

Bunker Podcast 45: Anthony Parasole

This set from Anthony Parasole was recorded live at House-N-Home in Brooklyn on January 17, 2009. It was his birthday and he was opening for Move D. He is co-owner of the white-hot Deconstruct label

Commix...DnB meets Techno

One of our favorite producer teams for a while now has been Commix, the UK drum and bass madmen. From hard hitting dancefloor smashers to liquid grooves, it's no mystery that Commix has been at the forefront of DnB for sometime now, with releases on Metalheadz for starters. There comes a time in every artist's life, especially in the dance world, in which one genre is not enough. For Commix, they have both rediscovered the wonderful bliss of techno/house. DTPodcast035: Commix

"I think when you’ve been involved in one scene so deeply for a long time, it’s difficult to listen to it with fresh ears" explained George from Commix in our recent interview with the D&B duo. "I think what we found in a lot of the more recent techno stuff that we’ve found ourselves falling in love with is a completely fresh look on dance music as a whole – which I think has had a really positive effect on our drum & bass as well"

As they explained in the interview, there's no chance of them giving up on D&B (as witnessed in their superb new FABRICLIVE CD) - but the current sounds of underground house and techno have invigorated them with a new outlook on production in general. Guy explained further: "One of the things about techno for me is the freedom of expression. As time’s gone by with drum & bass, when we sit down in the studio to write a drum & bass tune, there’s a lot of stigma attached to it, there’s a lot expected of us etcetera. When you listen to techno and you follow some producers, they’ve basically got so much freedom to do what they want with it, and it’s totally accept"

So what we have here is their first EVER house & techno set - recorded live at Medium at Plastic People back in November. It's a thoroughly enjoyable mix, perfectly mixed, with plenty of groove and melody throughout. We hope you enjoy this exclusive mix!

[Medium's 2nd Birthday is on Wednesday 18th February at Plastic People, with Loxy, Scuba, Icicle (techno set) and Sia. Not to be missed. Check www.myspace.com/mediumbeats for more details]

Kyle Geiger: February Promo

Named in DJ Mag as the 'breakthrough DJ of 2008' by Adam Beyer, Kyle's explosive decks and effects DJ sets bridge the divide between techno and minimal. Originally inspired by the harder, percussive stylings of the late 90's Swedish techno sound featured on seminal labels like Drumcode and Code Red, Kyle has witnessed the evolution of the genre as it morphed into a slower, groove based sound. Still loving the energy and power of the earlier phases of techno while embracing the genre's changes, Kyle has refined his productions into what very well may be a new breed of techno that pushes things forward for the next generation of techno to come. The Indiana-based producer has now come full circle. With his initial projects completed and urged on by long time friends and minimal techno veterans JPLS and Skoozbot, a demo made it to Drumcode label manager Adam Beyer who was on the hunt for what he describes as a 'modern techno sound'. Beyer immediately put Kyle's tracks to the test at the 2007 Winter Music Conference and invited him onboard as a Drumcode artist. The future is proving to be a very promising place for Kyle Geiger as he is set to drop two highly anticipated releases on Drumcode and take his widely recognized DJ set around the world and to the next level.
