Dario Zenker: Harry Klein Podcast

Playing live or spinning records or cds, Dario is acting with the crowd. He black out the bass for minutes, effects the rhythm into other dimensions until the people totally looses control, and then bomb the floor again. Things really happen with the youngster when he is behind the decks!

Resident Advisor 135: Marcel Dettman

RA concludes its podcasting year with a mix from Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann.
It wasn't a tough choice for RA to pick out who to close out 2008's podcast schedule. We simply asked the man responsible for our favorite mix CD. Marcel Dettmann's Berghain 02 was a towering techno monument—a celebration of the genre's past and its possible futures. Dettmann's career began in his hometown of Fürstenwalde in the mid '90s, where he organised parties alongside his friends (and now fellow Berghain residents) Marcel Fengler and Norman Nodge. After being headhunted as a resident by the owners of the Ostgut club, he played there for the venue's final three years until its closure in 2002. When the people behind Ostgut launched the Berghain club two years later, his unique outlook on techno ensured that he was one of the first on the list to be brought back into the fold.

Italoboyz - The Villa Oslo 12.27.08

Since arriving in London at the beginning of the new millennium, Italoboyz (Marco Donato and Federico Marton) have become an essential fixture of the capital's small but passionate minimal scene. From their notorious back-to-back DJ sets at FESH (333, London), their reputation has grown to the point where they can now be found playing regularly across Europe and the rest of the UK. However, it's not just the energy and flair of their DJ sets that has captured the imagination, Italoboyz releases on some of today's most influential minimal-house / techno labels like Treibstoff, Einmaleins Musik and Safari Electronique also made a strong impression on the scene in 2006.
Look for Italoboyz to continue their rise in 2009, and enjoy this end of the year live mix.

Dandi and Ugo: Xmas Mix

"Our trip in House Music began in far 1989 when our strong friendship and our common love for club electronic music became a passion: DJ! In this way began our story of the DOUBLE DJ SET: we work in pair like we are an only one DJ, we put on the stereo two viniles for all the length of our live set, so we are able to unite our musical preferences to make our nights full of energy! In these years the evolution of Sound, Rhythm, Melody thrill us really a lot and make us listen and play different kind of music."

Dandi and Ugo deliver us this final mix for the year, just in time for Christmas! Another quality mix from the Italian duo

{pinksilver}VA - Norte E Sul EP

[psnet014] Various – Norte E Sul EP

The word ‘Global’ is used almost daily in our lives, so you’d think that we all live within ear shot of each other. No doubt that cheap flights and the Internet have made our lives impractically joined, but this is all just an illusion.

In fact, we live in a world of 2 halves, that above and below Zero degrees. As our axis tilts fore and aft – we all seemingly cross a point where we all share a common pattern – even though some of us are diametrically opposite.

This release of Pinksilver Net is to celebrate that point in time. “Norte E Sul’ is a collection of tracks and compositions from producers in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. So whether you are in the grips of an impending winter or the approaching warmth of summer, sit back, relax and enjoy the superb 8 tracker we have compiled.

This is one for the playlist boys and girls, spread the love!

01 – Richard Parker – Juno City: A short and sweet Dub/Electronica track with lovely organic sounds that elevates to a very warm and cosy consign. (31° 57' S 115° 52' N).

02 – Blufarm – Good Bad: Ambient Dub House at its best. from the groovy line to the sublime far-reaching pads - one for the late afternoon. (37° 37' N 122° 23' W).

03 – Scrambler – Dark Fader: This is one for anytime of the day. An awesome reggae inspired dub tech track that has you reaching for the replay button. (37° 47' S 144° 58' E).

04 – Simple – From The Rain: This lazy groove with tender sounds will have you magnified to your couch. You’ll be asking your nearest friend to drag you off. (37° 37' N 122° 23' W).

05 – Markojux – New Bambi: You are set free from the protection of your elders to fend for yourself, Danger ensues! Is survival guaranteed? Choose your own fate with this percussive, emotional and moody piece from Marko. (37° 47' S 144° 58' E)

06 – Nicholáz– Suave: Suave by name and suave by nature, this very cool and upbeat Tech House number has a definite summer vibe with the cool guitar and piano charming you for the entire duration. (34° 35' S 58° 22' W).

07 – Taban Hayes – Spooning Weather: Taban hits us with a fantastic & intensely fun track – one that will have us dancing around the pool in grass skirts sipping on Mojitos and smoking trumpets. Hey! Where are my sunglasses!? Pete Lawrence – take watch! (20° 48' N 156° 20' W).

08 - Bellotta – Half Light: A lovely composition and journey into the fabric of your mind. A track that certainly sticks out in this release, but one we could not ignore. Turn the light out, close your eyes and enjoy the 17min trip. (34° 35' S 58° 22' W).

Resident Advisor 133: Trus'Me

Manchester soul man Trus'me gets down for this week's edition of the RA podcast.David Wolstencroft burst onto the scene last year with three mysterious 12-inches that grabbed the attention of house heads worldwide. His name, Trus'me, seemed to be the key: Whether it was the bumping deep house of "W.A.R. Dub" or the dreamy beatdown stylings of "Browns," his releases appealed to open-eared listeners tapped into the soulful spirit of vintage US house music. But after his relationship with Jerome Derradji's Still Music broke down, he found himself with a stack of unreleased material both by himself and friends, and little idea on what to do next. So, he did what any producer does: He started his own label. Already on its fifth release, Prime Numbers has put out tracks by Detroit producer Reggie Dokes as well as various artists associated with the Edinburgh-based Firecracker Recordings. And it looks to be set for 2009 as well, with a raft of new releases from Trus'me, Linkwood and others planned. In addition to getting the label up and running, Wolstencroft has also started up his weekly Disco 3000 party in his hometown of Manchester, and he's already got plans to take it worldwide. We spoke to David via e-mail to discuss the mix, his label and his grand plans to hold a festival in Croatia next year.

Ricardo Villalobos is #1 dj in the world

How does one accurately gauge a top DJ list? With the number of online publications that fight to claim their list is superior, is it really possible to have a truly accurate top list for djs? Residentadvisor.net sets out to achieve a realistic list, one in which even the true techno heads can appreciate. With Tiesto in the 60s and people like Magda, Matthew Dear, Radio Slave and Lee Burridge in the top 20, it seems as if this list actually has some sort of merit to it.

10. Lee Burridge
9. Magda
8. Dixon
7. Laurent Garnier
6. Sven Vath
5. Sasha
4. John Digweed
3. Luciano
2. Richie Hawtin
From RA.net:

In an age where we can find out the name of our favorite DJ's pet parakeet, Ricardo Villalobos is a rare breed: A superstar DJ that we still know precious little about. Sure, tiny bits of information leak out every time that he grants a rare interview, but it's been a long time since we've had someone so famous remain such a mystery. Perhaps that's one reason that we love him: Forced to focus on the wondrous music he selects (and makes), we inevitably cast him in the role we want him to play. Floor filler? Undoubtedly. At his late 2008 gig at Fabric, you could barely step into the main room at 7 AM. Futurist? There's no other DJ making massive crowds dance to such defiantly strange house music. Romantic? Of course! Who else would play heartbreaking folk songs from Chile in the middle of his sets? The best DJ in the world in 2008? Yep, that too.

Resident Advisor 132: Motorcity Drum Ensemble

Danilo Plessow is a hard man to pigeonhole. Since 2003, he's been producing broken beat and jazzier material with Joachim Tobias under the Inverse Cinematics banner. Their debut full-length Passin' Through was released this year, but there's another reason why people have been talking about Plessow in 2008. He's the man that's responsible for the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, producing music which seems to encapsulate the spirit of Detroit despite being made in Stuttgart - a place that is considered Germany's own 'motor city'.

His Raw Cuts series of releases saw Plessow take a cut-and-paste approach to house music, splicing up disco and soul loops to create house tracks that managed to be retrospective and forward-thinking at the same time. He also uses the Motor City Drum Ensemble moniker to indulge his techno side, putting these records out on his and Mujaba's Four Roses imprint. Danilo's mix touches all these bases, taking us from subdued disco through to bumpin' house before going deliciously deep. He'll also be playing at RA's Christmas party at matter, so if you fancy checking Plessow's smooth grooves in the flesh, you can pick up a ticket here. We chatted with Danilo by e-mail to talk about the mix, his labels and the scene in Stuttgart.

Misstress Barbara: Live @ Smart Bar

Born under the Sagittarius sign in Sicily, Italy, in 1975, Misstress Barbara (4 's' as a word game between miss and stress) moved to Montreal at age 8, where she lives since. She holds a degree in Communication Studies, specialized in Cinema, and a glider and cessna plane license. arbara begun buying studio equipment shortly after the beginning of her DJ career and she spent the next twelve months familiarizing herself with the equipment and working on original tracks without really finishing them. The real work started once she finished school and dedicated herself full time to studio life. She plans on running two labels, her techno label Relentless (www.relentlessmusic.com) established in 1999 and a house one for her Barbara Brown projects, unnamed for the moment but scheduled for late 2000. They will have different names but will be coming from the same mother, her company called Energia Productions. She also plans on doing music for films, video games and more radio oriented remix projects. Those are her plans so far, but this is only the tip of the iceberg as her future is looking very bright and her DJ schedule is constantly moving forward, as well as her studio work which promises to bring us more of the cutting edge music she is known for.

Seph live in Buenos Aires

Dj Seph, one of Lisbon's hottest Djs and for a long time involved in the portuguese dance music scene. After a full year of work and preparation, the first release surfaced in June 2005, two originals by Rhythm Code (Moov & Addictive) that caused quite an impact from the begining, followed by the Mike Hiratzka & Joe C's 'show u the way' (original & Chris Micali remix), both of wich caught the attention of most top jocks. The label's simple aim to release good quality underground music, whatever sub-genre it may fall into, has already given Open Up Records support from all diferent directions and has reached the bags of Djs like Deep Dish, Cattaneo, John Digweed, Anthony Pappa, Steve Lawler, Paul Van Dyk, Nic Fanciulli, or Kasey Taylor to name a few. Since the begining, Open Up has earned a reputation as a trustable underground dance label by consistently releasing innovative forward thinking music from every corner of the earth. A&R by Dj Seph guarantees selections that excite the dancefloor and push genre boundaries, with the main goal of constantly delivering the goods. 'Fresh talent is our main quest', says Dj Seph...'and this is just the beginning.' Stick around.

Secret Cinema live @ Scheveningen 7/27/08

Jeroen Verheij aka Secret Cinema started producing as Meng Syndicate in 1990. His first record 'Sonar System' came out on the Hithouse label in Belgium (ARS). Soon it became a big clubhit and through remixes by Speedy J aka Pullover the record became all the more successful. Because of the unfortunate death of Peter Slaghuis, the man behind the Hithouse project, the co-operation with ARS did not work out to Jeroen's satisfaction.
Jeroen has been playing live since 1993, but when Secret Cinema's 'Volt!' came out in 2000, it was the start of Jeroen's new and restyled energetic live set. A more techno-orientated Secret Cinema only set, different from his former live-sets, wich combined Grooveyard and Secret Cinema songs. After that, Jeroen released his first album in 2001 under the name of Secret Cinema, 'White Men Can't Funk.'
Furthermore, he is busy co-producing. The theme for Rotterdam's Heineken Fast Forward Dance Parade 'Let the Music be your Guide,' created in co-operation with Michel de Hey, hit the Dutch Top 40 Charts. Other jointed projects are Secret Cinema vs. Private Productions, with Robert Kroos, Hidden Rivals and Special Request in co-operation with Mirko 'Miracle' van Dommelen, Starchild in co-operation with Zki and the recent successful collaboration Michel de Hey vs. Grooveyard. The year 2001 saw the international breakthrough for Secret Cinema with the release of SC002, a very techno orientated project extracted from his live-set including the track 'Carton Clip,' his album 'White Men Can't Funk' and subsequently his debut live performances in Ireland, Italy and Japan (Wire festival 2001). For 2003 a busy schedule is already planned with the follow up to SC002,and many live-gigs around the globe, including all the big festivals in Holland and that means many!! Go check out the album. Even more, go check out his live-set!!

KOMPOSIT
(Lobotomy, EQ, Auralism, Atlanta)

As hypnotic as he is alien, Komposit also serves as a stage presence in which the audience is provided with a unique, intense experience: sound loops designed specifically for each show truly pushing the 'live' context of electronics with complete deconstruction and reconstruction of infectious tech-based grooves, noise, and harmonics; A new presence for a new era.

Resident Advisor 131: Johnno Burgess

Bugged Out's Johnno Burgess brings us a colourful selection of yacht rock for this week's RA podcast.

The Bugged Out brand is one that is recognised and appreciated worldwide, with passions being fuelled both by their record label and the hugely successful parties that they promote. Johnno Burgess and Paul Benney started the night in 1994 to reflect the music that they were writing about at the time in Jockey Slut magazine. The duo hosted LFO and Autechre at Manchester's Sankeys Soap for their first ever event, but have since gone on to have residencies in London, Barcelona and at their original home of Sankeys, whilst also putting on additional events in countries all over the globe.

Bugged Out isn't Burgess' only venture into clubland, however. He also promotes a Sunday pub session in London that goes by the name Erection Section. Titled after the time of the night when DJs play slower records for the more romantically inclined members of the crowd, these parties are where Burgess lets his musical hair down, playing all sorts of records that don't get airtime at a normal Bugged Out event. For his RA podcast, Burgess has put together a master class in "yacht rock," a selection full of '80s pop classics, Balearic gems and a couple of recent tracks that embody the Erection Section spirit. We caught up with Johnno by e-mail to chat about Phil Collins, Bugged Out and Basshunter.
