Essential Mx 11/22/08: Flying Lotus

With stints on Adult Swim's famous tweener text boxes and Alice Coltrane as a close relative, it would seem that Juno Leed has made quite a name for himself. But a few Cartoon Network jobs and a famous Aunt do not even come close to summing up this California native's musical career. With the release of his debut album, 1983 and the follow up album, Los Angeles, as well as several EPs along the way, FlyLo has established himself as a world class producer among the likes of Madlib, J Dilla, Danger Mouse and more risk-taking hip hop producers. This week, IT is proud to showcase his Essential Mix, and he will also be in Atlanta on the 28th of December as part of the late nights for STS9.

Mathias Matthew : Winter 08 Promo

From humble beginnings, Mathias has transmogrified over the past six years to become one of the Motor Citys most original, wicked and hard-hitting DJs. His love of music and keen ear has always been present, but he did not begin to develop his technical skills until he met one of Detroits original House DJs, G-Major. Since the meeting Mathias has worked hard, putting his best foot forward to master the skills necessary to spread his love for the electronic music culture.

Mathiass early appearances at Necto paved the way for future appearances at: Bleu Room; Exile, Crave, Centre Street, Oslo, Altered State, Trancesphere.com Radio (Rising Star, 2004 Summer Sessions), Fiberline Audio, and Movement Music Festival (Detroits Electronic Music Festival), Northern Lights Lounge and The Works.

In 2005 Mathias began experimenting, exploring tech-house, electro, minimal, techno, and neu-prog; making it his mission to constantly evolve in order to not only move club-goers, but also touch them. Since, Mathias has re-emerged a more proficient and energetic performer, entertaining club-goers and music lovers with his spirit and signature sound.

Influenced from long-time favorites Mathew Jonson, James Holden, Ripperton, Superpitcher and Alex Smoke, Mathias has continued to exemplify the evolution of sound, body, and soul. The performance beyond the turntables and CDJs is part of Mathiass presence. The energy he pours into his music selection and performance is highlighted by his constant motion to the dark flair of pulsating bass lines and kick drums; filling the atmosphere with his unmistakable essence and entertaining the Motor City.

Resident Advisor 113: Pigon

Efdemin and Rndm bring the funk as Pigon on this week's RA podcast.

If the RA podcast were a sitcom, this one would be a "very special episode." In our very first repeat performance, we've got Phillip Sollmann, AKA Efdemin, returning to the controls as one-half of Pigon. For those unfamiliar with Sollmann's collaborative project with Oliver Kargl, AKA Rndm, it's basically their jam band outfit, music "mostly done live with simple edits."

For their RA podcast, however, the duo have chosen to go the DJ mix route, selecting a host of classic and shoulda-been-classic tracks from the likes of Jesper Dahlbäck (as the Persuader), Jeff Mills, and Soul Capsule. Up-to-the-minute fetishists need not worry, though, Momus's forthcoming Dial release leads off the cast and Pigon's new joint on Beatstreet helps close it out.

Since RA already spoke to Efdemin for his own podcast, we quizzed Kargl about Pigon's name, the software they use, and who might make a better freestyle rapper.

Resident Advisor 130: Emerson Todd

RA welcomes its first Australian to the podcast ranks: Dirtybird newbie Emerson Todd.

Emerson Todd might be an unknown to the majority of RA readers, but in his native Australia he's been making waves in the electronic music scene. Todd started out as a deep house producer and DJ on the bar scene, until became one of the resident DJs at New Zealand's Kase, Auckland's only superclub. His bar gigs helped him hone his deeper sound, but his residency at the Kase gave him a chance to play on the same stage as some of the world's biggest DJs. He's currently a resident at Sydney's Lost Baggage night, which has put on DJs such as Alex Smoke, Aril Brikha and Joris Voorn.

Todd has had plenty of studio experience, both as a part of House of Downtown with Christiaan Ercolano, and also as an engineer for both Kim and The Presets. However, he's only been producing on his own over the past couple of years, with his first solo EP coming out on Darren Emerson's Underwater label back in 2006. This year has seen him release his track "Rumpelstiltskin" on the digital arm of Claude VonStroke's Dirtybird label, and with more to come for them, you should keep your eye out for Emerson's own brand of driving tech-house. We caught up with Emerson to ask him about the mix, The Presets and the scene in Sydney.

Alland Byallo: Churn Two Mix

A Los Angeles native now residing in San Francisco, Russian-blooded Alland Byallo has broken into the House scene with his own unique blend of deep tech funk. Alland's taste, coupled with his research and digging, always instills an undeniable groove and tickles the chin-scratching trainspotting senses.

Alland's involvement with music didn't just start from splurging and buying some 1200's. Having been raised with music since the age of 5 playing piano, and adding trumpet at age 11, it only seemed natural for Alland to follow up his skills and training by sharing his taste in quality music with people as a DJ, and pursuing production. Lately, Alland has been quite busy in the studio working hard on his own unique take on House music.

November 7th, 2004 marked the beginning of the 4th season that Alland has hosted his own weekly internet radio House broadcast, the infamous Comfort Sessions, for Selekta.com. The show was inspired by a couple of things: The love of enlightening and educating others about music and the brilliant artists who make it all happen. Alland has made it his mission to give back to the local and global House scene that has given so much to him; to make the world aware of the missions of those around him that truly deserve recognition and respect. With Comfort Sessions coming back for another year, a vinyl label in the works, Nightlight Music - a digital label that's growing by the day, and a crew of brilliant and eager friends and associates, the push is on! Between dramatic amounts of hard work, dedication, research and the help of the most amazing people, Alland and the Deepergroove team are going to leave an impression that will last and last, constantly growing and evolving.

Format B - Live @ Lief Festival & Afterparty

Format:B are Franziskus and Jakob. Jakob is a Berliner, from Kreuzberg to be exact. As all good parents do, his wanted him to play an instrument. After years of successfully dodging music lessons and his parents wishes, he finally at the subtle age of 15 decided that he desperately needed a bass guitar, which then through diligent practice manoeuvred him from hardcore bands to funk and jazz bands. But suddenly, there was a small problem: he liked Techno parties much better than rock concerts. So, as one does, he began buying the odd techno maxi here and there until one day little Jakob thought to himself: Why heck, I can do that too! So off he went and bought himself an overpriced Atari St40 and a cheap synthesizer, only to realize that oops those guys from Detroit really do know what theyre doing and that it wasnt that easy after all. Well, that is basically where Jacobs ambitiously planned out life suddenly took a screeching of the wheels turn in another direction. Franziskus is from Erfurt, a small and rural part of Germanys quite rough and wild East, which didnt stop him from starting piano lessons at the innocent age of 6. His musical interests took him from the usual suspects like Michael Jackson and The Pet Shop Boys through to Hardcore (obviously not on the piano). But then one day, or night to be exact similar to Jakob, all was to suddenly change.. A fortuitous night out at the legendary E-Werk in 1993, made this young mans heartbeat skip from Chopin over to a 4/4 beat where it was to remain, probably forever. Three years later Franziskus took up residency at the infamous Sub ground Lighthouse After hour, resulting in numerous further bookings. The paths of these two young men crossed whilst they were both studying to be sound engineers. Seeing as all the other students in there year were long haired Metal heads it was only a matter of time until their paths crossed. So, after spending a few long Berlin party nights together they decided to see if they could start a project together. And so the story ends or better yet, begins with Format:B...........................

Convextion: Live PA @ Faktion 4/25/08

Gerard Hanson was born in 1972. He hails from the unlikely environments of Dallas, Texas USA. Little is known about this producer who seems to have Scandinavian roots. His productions have reflections with Basic Channel/Chain Reaction sound. His main inspirations are Juan Atkins and Derrick May. His music also has influences from Stefan Robbers, Red Planet and Carl Craig. He found a way where everything came together: DeEPness, Minimalism and Soul, the Detroit-Berlin connection. In 1994 Gerard Hanson and Dan Kurzius started 'Hardsync', a Magazine dedicated to electronic music reviews and artist interviews. It has been defunct since 1996 as a result of a computer crash. Hard Sync was an outlet for several Texas-based electronic music enthusiasts to reach out to others around the world that shared similar musical interests. He released his first 12' in 1995. Ever since his debut 12' on Matrix in 1995. From 1995-1997, he released 5 EP's, and then only 2 more in the next 6 years until 2005. The reason he produced so infrequently was because when his first releases came out, the tracks were licensed to some big releasers and he did not get paid for them. After that some other labels approached him but just wanted more of the same and didn't really seem to understand his sound. They just wanted more of the same sounds. After that he stopped releasing music and produced only for his personal usage. After a couple of years the label Down Low convinced him to pick up his producing again. He is very careful about sharing his music with the rest of the world. In the last decade he only used the aliases Convextion and E.R.P. (Event Related Potential). E.R.P is an electro-edged moniker. Gerard has remained willingly anonymous since his debut in 1995, but he came out of obscurity for a debut European Live performance in London in April 2006. Why he remains unknown is a mystery. In the future we will hear much more from this producer.

The meaning of the word Convextion is 'the internal movement of currents within fluids or gases.'

Emmerichk: 4th

Emmerichk from Mexico has discoverd the world of electronic music at a very early age: His father was a great fan of electronic sounds. Thus, Emmerichk has known artists like Kraftwerk or Isao Tomita from childhood on.
At the age of 14 he had access to a sound studio and learned how to use mixers, drum machines and synthesizers. So he has tried to produce his own electronic music at that young age.
Later on, as an own music scene for modern electronics had been established in Mexico, Emmerichk learned to know many other artists that had similar interests and music styles. Together, they worked with their music and ideas and found adequate means to publish their music.
Emmerichk's music is a wilful mix of sound carpets, clicks-and-cuts and rhythmical micro-structures. Many tracks also adress dancefloor audience as minimal and dub techno elements are involved in these songs.
His debut "Frandalanke" has been published on the mexican label "filtro".

Resident Advisor 129: Lee Burridge

Known for delivering marathon 12-hour performances when he's given the chance (something hinted at by last year's Balance compilation, which spanned a mighty three CDs), Lee Burridge's sets take in a wide range of modern dancefloor sounds. Burridge made his name in the unlikely hotspot of Hong Kong during the superclub boom of the '90s, and, by the time he decided to move back to his native home of England, his contacts book was overflowing with the biggest names. It was here that he set up his Tyrant residency at Fabric with Craig Richards, and together they mixed some of the most celebrated compilations in the club's DJ mix series. Burridge is currently residing in San Francisco, where he's started up a new party entitled Get Weird and, perhaps in that spirit, Lee has come up with something different for his RA podcast; a mix of melancholic melodies and stripped back beats that is, according to him, strictly for the ladies.Unfortunately there's no tracklisting with this one as Lee is having a bit of trouble remembering the names of the tracks, but hopefully the RA faithful will be able to piece it together in the forum. In the meantime, we caught up with Burridge by e-mail to ask him about the mix, the Get Weird parties and his forthcoming studio project.

Bodytonic Podcast 24: Marcel Dettman

Marcel Dettmann and Berghain nightclub go together like Jodie Marsh and China Whites but any other comparisons between the two would be stretching things to an unbelievable level. Marcel lives in the Berlin neigbourhood of Friedrichshain, about a ten minute cycle from the club many consider to be the best in the world. Those of you who’ve had to queue outside for an hour and a half only to be turned away while the some soap-dodger in a tracksuit gets in might have a different opinion. But with Tresor apparently off the boil, it seems that the only place for techno to move forward is Berghain. Marcel is an old school East German who was just hitting his teens when techno was in its infancy. Marcel recorded the second Bergain compilation this year. Resident Advisor described it as a “defining moment when techno got out of that locked groove.”.

Resident Advisor 128: Murmur

There are few artists that are able to maintain the anonymity that once typified the world of electronic music. Murmur is one of them. So, instead of talking about David Togher and Graeme White's (lack of) personality, all we have to go on is their music—a dub techno concoction that stands among some of the finest modern examples of the genre.

The music has been released solely through one label, Meanwhile, which over the past four years has released a mere 13 releases—with two more to come before the end of the year. But where the label lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality as you'll hear on Murmur's RA podcast—which is composed solely of the imprint's material. Over the course of exactly 74 minutes, the journey is a deep one, full of fading lights, indistinct vocal samples and dub techno that refreshingly doesn't wear its Basic Channel influence on its sleeve (all of the time, at least).

Music Gates Show: Michael de Hey

Michel de Hey's DJ career kicked off with his first release 'Break' entering the US Billboard top ten. Since then, he has developed his funky techno sound to what it is today. He's no stranger to club promotion, with his own night 'Future…' in Nighttown in Rotterdam pulling in the punters from all round Europe since its naissance in 1996. Michel has since invited many international artists to educate the crowd with quality house and techno. Michel is one of the people who took responsibility for dance music and its direction on the local Rotterdam scene. With his talent both as a producer and as a DJ, Michel opened the door to techno and techhouse for generations of clubbers. Due to his hectic schedule Michel stopped his night in 2003. Nowadays Michel is still a household name in Holland, winning several Best Dj Awards. Furthermore he transformed into an international dj who has seen almost every club and festival all over the world. His latest productions and mixcds emphasize his status as a dj and producer.
