Mike Shannon in Atlanta 11/15/2008

With over 10 years of DJ skill under his belt, including the operation of his renowned 12" record label, Cynosure Recordings, Mike Shannon is recognized as one of the central figures in Canada's emerging electronic music scene.

The trajectory of Shannon's career mirrors that of the nascency of Canadian electronic music. Born and raised in Kitchener Ontario, he began DJing at the age of twelve, using a mixer bought for him by his father, and by the age of fifteen was playing for his first audiences. The year was 1993. Situated right in between Detroit's illustrious techno history and the fruition of Toronto's burgeoning rave scene, Kitchener presented a young Shannon with ample opportunity to absorb both musical legacy and creative license. These two points of reference, these parameters of past and possibility, left an indelible mark on his attitude toward music, marks that can still be seen in his work today. Mike Shannon will be playing at the Spring 4th Annex Center in Atlanta, GA. on 11/15/2008

Resident Advisor 125: Move D

Looking over Move D's distinguished discography, it's almost easy to see why 2008 has been something of a watershed year for the producer. As the world of electronic music continues to move away from the dry, minimal sound, D's warm, deep past looks prescient. But while deep house and ambient music may once again fall out of favor, David Moufang, the man behind the Move D name, will most likely keep plugging away until the whole thing comes around again. (After all, he's already been at it for more than 16 years.)For now, Moufang is riding high on a stellar set of singles, the most recent of which was released on fellow RA podcaster Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint. And yet most will remember 2008 as the year that Moufang once again proved that collaboration is his strong suit: Moufang's stunning full-length on Smallville with Benjamin Brunn continues to reveal its mysteries more than four months after its release. On his RA podcast, D has a few unreleased collaborations on tap, as well as a whole host of solo material—also unreleased. Sure, there are a few things you might have heard here before, but this live set from Berlin's Tape Club, is a self-portrait of the producer in flux. Moufang himself calls it a "mess." We call it a pretty awesome one.

Ibiza Voice Podcast: Nick Curly

Nick Curly began his career at the tender of age 15 when he became the resident DJ at the legendary Vibration Club in the Karlsruhe region of Germany. Ten years later and he is now the resident DJ at the Loft Club in Ludwigshafen, as well as at the Soho Club in Mannheim. A regular at clubs around Germany for much of the past decade, Nick is now becoming a sought after DJ in other European territories. Whilst Nick was building his DJ career, these last few years he has also been putting together the finishing touches to his skills as a composer of music and, since 2006, has been releasing his own productions. Nick draws on a range of inspirations when making music - such luminaries as DJ Sneak, Frankie Knuckles, Air, RAJO, Dennis Ferrer, Fred Everything and Villalobos, Luciano - to produce a sound that is very contemporary and touches on elements of house, tech-house, techno and minimal. Nick is constantly searching for the best balance, in each track. Most of Nick's releases to date have been put out on his own 8Bit Records and Cecille Records labels, which he runs from his base in Mannheim, Germany. However there are some exciting new tracks lined up on the new labels murmur records (UK) and Supernature, a new imprint run by the guys from Audiofly.

Dance Under the Blue Moon 10/25/08

Anja Schneider has four jobs: She’s a label head, a DJ, a producer and a radio personality all rolled into one. No wonder one interviewer called her a "perpetual motion machine": her wheels never stop turning.

A Berlin resident since 1994, Anja started out on the airwaves, producing for KissFM and later Fritz Radio, where since 2000 she has hosted the weekly radio show Dance Under The Blue Moon. The show broadcasts on the air and on the web every Saturday night, and trainspotters should take note: She doesn’t mix records on the show, she plays them, talks about them and, thankfully, tells you what they’re called, which makes the show a welcome way to find out what is bubbling under in Berlin.

Anja Schneider also runs the label Mobilee Records and its new offshoot Leena. Despite its short history, Mobilee has grown into one of Berlin’s most closely watched outfits, with a close-knit roster of producers including Sebo K, GummiHz, Exercise One, Pan-Pot and Marcin Czubala. With its discography now running into the mid-30s, Mobilee has managed to carve out its own distinct sound in a city where everyone seems to be making music: the label’s mix of pristine minimal, slinky grooves and deep house manages to push dance music forward while remaining instantly accessible.

Week of the Dutch DJs: 10/24/08

Joris Voorn is a producer and DJ from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Being raised up in a musical family, music became a big part of his life. Around 1995 electronic music caught his attention. Getting deeper into this music when he started DJing in 1997, Joris developed an interest in techno and house music. Concerning his background, Joris started thinking about making his own music and bought the versatile MC-303 groovebox to experiment with synth sounds and drumloops.
In the end of 2000 Joris started building up a small studio to produce his own music, which led to his first release called Muted Trax pt1 on Keynote. His first EP was a success, filling the record boxes of Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, DJ Rush, Technasia. In 2003 OST memories Pt1 was released on Technasia's SINO label, and was followed by OST memories Pt2, containing the anthem Incident which was heard on dancefloors around the world.
After the succes of Incident Joris released his debut CD album called Future History on the Sino label. Encompassing 3 years of ideas and inspiration, the CD contains 20 diverse tracks, a seamless soundscape that represents his arrival as a relevant techno producer.

Album in Review: Dub Taylor's Humatron

So it's been a little under a month since I first picked up this album. At first listen, this is a really good album, from the very first track all the way through the two mixes. At second, third and so-on listen, this is definitely one of the best albums I've heard from any genre all year. Born in Germany and currently living in Amsterdam, Patrice Baumel is a dj/producer who has been an active member of the electronic dance music scene for many years. He is an artist who devotes all of his energy to the dancefloor, with his dynamic sets as well as his trademark climaxing productions. His music is full of emotion, dynamic and contrasts of cold, warm, soft and hard: "If you can feel it, it's good music!"

This is another fabulous mix from Patrice, who brought us "Roar" in July, on Get Physical Records. Roar stayed at the top of Beatport's top 10 for more than a while, earning it as one of the top techno tracks for the summer. Enjoy this mix as well.

The Joy Experience: Joy Kitikonti 10/18/08

Musician, dj and producer, Joy Kitikonti is a polyhedric artist with several discographic successes, important partnerships and awards in his background. All these experiences made him the complete artist of today.
Joy has already released hundreads of tracks during the latest years, both under his real name and under different pseudonyms; he was a producer for BXR label (MediaRecords), for Orion Muzik, Analytictrail, Mindshake, Movment with Tom pooks, Eukahouse, Scandium, Grasp, Terminal M, and many more.
Among his successes there are ‘Joyenergizer’ and ‘Joydontstop’: these tracks made him famous worldwide and very requested at the most important festivals, clubs and events in all the countries. Then the great ‘Pornojoy’ single was the hit of summer 2003 and it reached the top of the European charts. In 2005 ‘Dirty Summer’ is another important chapter of Joy Kitikonti’music history, then ‘Funk my Beat’ released for Metempsicosi Music and ‘The Dialogue’ out on Mindshake, the Paco Osuna’label.

I've also decided that one mix every season (3 or 4 months) just isn't good enough, so I've decided that it's time Infernal Techno branched once again, therefore I have come up with a weekly online radio feed. Is there a name more synonymous with Chicago house music than Derrick Carter? You might be able to make a case for Green Velvet or Felix Da Housecat, but Carter surely belongs in the conversation. Through his productions, remixes and DJ sets, he was one of the most important figures in the Windy City's mid-'90s resurgence.Like his contemporaries, Carter hasn't slowed down a bit: After a stellar run of exactly 100 releases with his Classic label (an imprint run with Luke Solomon that is set to open its doors once again later this year), Carter focused his attention on DJing and production, but perhaps most of all remixing—as you'll hear on his RA podcast. "I've been working on loads of stuff but it seems as if it takes forever to get released," he tells us. That much is clear: Carter's RA podcast is all him, all boompty, all house, all nü pschidt. It's a bouncy mix that'll have you wondering what all those labels are waiting for...

iFLASHBACK! Lee Curtiss NYE 2006

It's not too often I go back and post an older mix such as this one, reaching all the way back to 2006's NYE. Michigan native Lee Curtiss manages to always stay ahead of the curve though and this mix still excites even the most critical of dance fan. Lee Curtiss has a forthcoming release on Wolf + Lamb titled Sexy Dancer. It will be W&L's first vinyl release.
