Resident Advisor 122: Simbad

Minimal techno's epicenter may be Berlin, but its rise can also be pinned to the fact that there are unlikely pockets of activity where the genre holds sway. In South America, it's Chile that most often gets name-checked, but with the likes of Fase Miusic Sender, Ernesto Ferreyra and Barem hailing from Argentina, it's indisputable that the land of gauchos comes in a close second. Simbad Segui may not be a native Argentine, but he comes pretty darn close: At the age of 17, he made the country his home, moving from his native France to Córdoba, the town where his parents were raised. Since then, he's been weaving his early dub and reggae influences into a deep techno sound that incorporates minimal's hypnotic potential while remaining lithe enough to find itself able to incorporate some of that ever-popular deep house that the kids are talking about so much these days.Perhaps more important than his sound, however, is Simbad's contribution to the Argentine scene: He's been a resident DJ in local clubs for many years, and done much to support the artists around him, including his sister May, Cristobal Paz and Fanco Cinelli—all who feature on his RA podcast. It's a mix that showcases an Argentinean view of current minimal techno and deep house. But be careful: After listening to this one, you may just want to make it your home as well.

Nick Hoppner(MyMy) Bodytonic Podcast 21

Nick Höppner has been djing since 1997. He started out in Hamburg based bars and clubs like Tanzhalle and Golden Pudel Club. After he moved to Berlin in 2001, he became a resident at the first Panorama Bar and played regularly in different clubs like the Watergate among others. Having been a fervent follower of Jungle/Drum’n’Bass in the early 90s, the first releases on Perlon or Kompakt implanted the straight kick in his head to a lasting effect.

From 1999 to 2002, Höppner has been working as an editor for Groove Magazine, followed by a job at Berlin based Electronica label Morr Music. Since 2005, Höppner is completely focusing on being a fulltime dj and producer. He runs the project MyMy with his partner Lee Jones. They have released five eps and their critically acclaimed debut album “Songs For The Gentle” on Playhouse so far.

2 new mixes from Russell G!!

Russell has been DJ’ing since 2001 after covering many miles attending many nights listening to DJ’s such as Tall Paul, Seb Fontaine and Sasha. In 2004 Russell’s style evolved to more of a house sound, a move which suited him and has seen him appear at nights including “The Gallery” @ Turnmills, The Honey Club in Brighton and appear on the same billing with legends such as Erick Morillo and many of the current crop of “Nu-Breed” DJ’s such as Mark Knight & Funkagenda. Russell has proven he is more than able to pick the right track for exactly the right time. Apart from gracing the decks at many a night on British shores Russell has since gone on to leave his mark on the European scene with gigs in the Ukraine, Poland, Slovenia & Sweden, the next 12 months will see him clock up more air miles with trips to Morocco, France, Egypt and more in the offing.

Plattenleger: 9/21/2008

When the exceptional British DJ and cult presenter John Peel played Abi 99 shortly after its release in 1999 on his legendary radio show, it became clear that the five years of research with synths and drum machines had been worth while.

Inspired by the public interest, Spieth remixed Egoexpress on Ladomat during the following year, and added You Dont Fool Me, the follow up-12 inch and published his debut album Fluchtpunkt on the Cologne-Stuttgart label onitor

He followed this with a lot of highly recomended releases and remixes for acts like 'Process', Michael Mayer and more.
In the past years he travelled as a DJ all around Europe, where he usually chose the narrow path between harsher House and rather minimalistic Techno.

A set must be multifunctional, to build up and break down pressure, he explains a statement that - especially in times of inflationary minimalisation - is not only very courageous, but musically also offers a constant welcome change.

Even if the latest productions and DJ-Sets are less noisy, Joachim has always kept his weakness for massive beats and basses, for the felt beat precisely for the one which makes people go nuts

Resident Advisor 120: Steffi

Panorama Bar resident Steffi gets deep on this week's edition of the RA podcast.

Because she's a DJ, but prefers not to produce all that much, you might not know the name Steffi. But as anyone who has been to the Panorama Bar recently will attest, you're not likely to forget one of her trademark deep house-inclined sets. It's a varied sound that takes deepness as its center and then spins it out to include house, techno and even a bit of acid.

That eclecticism can also be heard on the imprint that she runs with Dutch producer Dexter, Klakson. Fastgraph, Duplex, Seymor Bits, Putsch 79 and Dexter himself have all released tunes on the label. In mixing up old and new throughout her mix for RA, Steffi showcases one side of where electronic music is at right now with tracks by STL, Omar-S, Pépé Bradock and Patrice Scott. This is one that rides the wave of deep music all the way to the bass-filled floor and back up again.

Barem: September Promotional

Mauricio Barembuem (a.k.a. Barem) of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been djing and producing since 2003. A student of music since the age of 15, Barem's love affair with music started with the guitar -- playing mostly rock and blues in the beginning. Soon after, during a trip to Europe, he realized his own passion for minimal techno while visiting Berlin. He has been djing and producing ever since that vacation -- now with several releases coming up on various labels. Barem's sound is accomplished, simplistically complex and ultra-heady. He fuses minimal concepts with a funky frame of mind. In short, Barem rocks

Minitek Festival: Review

It's 10:20 am on Monday morning following the first weekend of Minitek Festival in New York City. I am at work. I am not well rested one bit, and before I venture any further into a more in depth look at the weekend, I will say that I had a lot of fun dancing to extremely good music.

Now, on to the good stuff. This weekend was very close to being a huge disaster. We arrive into NYC's dainty La Guardia airport with very few problems, albeit our own. Thursday saw us toting from club to club to see what the city had to offer on a normal weeknight; Layo + Bushwacka @ Cielo and New York City's own Derek Plaslaiko at A.P.T. While Cielo was visually a more stimulating experience, Derek took the cake with his thumping tune selection.

Friday...the worst happened. After procrastinating for a while at night, we made it down to Penn Station, only to find that the line for the Plaza was around the block and not moving. While there was very obviously music and some festival attendees inside, it was apparent that the "dedicated" boys in blue, the NYPD, wasn't going to let anybody else inside until a few things were straightened out. After about an hour (the time now being close to 2 am), the staff finally started honoring those who had tickets. We happened to have VIP access, so we were honored before most everyone else. Inside, however, we found new problems. The computer system to access all of the ticketing information supposedly crashed. The separate VIP bracelets were not being handed out. None of our "discounted drinks" ever happened. There was no designated smoking area, and if you left the building to smoke, you weren't getting back in. The music was great, but the set times were all sorts of out of place. Come 3:30 am, the visuals being projecte all the way around the room came off and a short message that read "It will take a lot more to stop us" adorned the walls. For some reason this encouraged people to cheer, however at this point I had friends messaging me that they were told to leave the property even though they had purchased tickets and nobody else was getting inside. Then, another message that read "Paul Ritch, Paco Osuna and Marco Carola @ Rebel in 10 minutes" came onto the screen. This festival was getting more confusing by the minute, but without haste, we sprinted towards Rebel which was, thankfully, a few blocks away. Another cover charge and 15 minutes of drinking wasn't exactly what I was hoping for by this point, but I took what I could get. Again, a lot of shutouts for Rebel Nightclub due to capacity issues.

Saturday was a new day. My experience with Coney Island has been dismal up until this point, so I'm kind of looking forward to this. Coney Island has that whole early 20th century, eery, sideshow freak aspect to it which has seemed to wane crowds over the years. However, I am thinking this will be a great setting for great techno music. A nice, scenic one hour train ride into BK sets the stage for the rest of the day. The staff at the ticketing booth seemed a little confused as to how we had already received our wrist bands, and then proceeded to inform us that a weekend pass was only good for friday and saturday night. After a quick burst of laughter and telling them how wrong this seemed, they found their error. We were in. Two stages were set up: one to the immediate left and one straight all the way back. The first stage had no music and hardly any equipment, so it was clear that this stage was not operational at the moment. Afternoon Coffee Boys had just started on the purple stage and the sound quickly drowned out the sorrow that had taken us this far into the weekend. Saturday was a great afternoon for music, even though a few rain drops seemed to fall for about a 30 minute period. No halts in the music. The music ended around 10:00 pm, not Midnight. Before leaving Coney Island and after hearing numerous rumors that this festival was not going to take place at Penn at night, we asked the staff where to go for the rest of the festivities. We were told "Mandy, Troy Pearce and Audiofly @ Webster Hall; Magda + Monoblock @ Studio B". Official event staff told us this.

We headed out once again to see what the night was going to bring us. Nothing could surprise me at this point in time. Since Brooklyn was so far from our hotel (and we had not planned on returning there until later), we hit Webster Hall first. At 2:30 am, even though the marquee confirmed what we were told, there was no techno being played at Webster Hall. Not even house music; top 40 music. The cover was $30 and not one single person at this particular nightclub had attended Minitek at Coney Island earlier that day. The cashier at the door gave very vague information regarding any of the djs that were supposed to play this night, so we decided not to chance it. We then spent the next 2 hours trying to hail a cab to take us to Brooklyn with no luck. This was the end of our Minitek Festival experience, for we could not make Sunday's trek out to Coney Island due to our flight booking.

From what I've heard, Sunday at Coney Island went off without a hitch. It only took the staff 3 days to get their act together and actually have scheduled time slots run effectively! If the music at this festival had not been half as good as it actually was, this would have been a complete waste of time and money. The unprepared, amateur staff at this festival made for quite an experience though.
