Essential mix: Peace Division 8/30/08

When Danny Tenaglia is one of your most vocal supporters, you know you are doing something right. Clive Henry and Justin Drake make up one of House Musics most influential production duos, Peace Division.

Naming yourself after a UN peace keeping force may not seem the most relevant thing to do if youre making house music specifically designed to be played loud, but then Peace Division dont exactly play by the rules. Making music that doesnt rely on formulas (you wont find snare rolls or cripplingly obvious keys here), Clive Henry and Justin Drake have carved out a niche in house music for the last 10 years, which although many have tried to imitate, is completely original.

Drake and Henry were first brought together in 1994, alongside Dylan Rhymes (who shortly left to concentrate on his solo material) when Justin (the engineer of the duo) was engineering a track Clive was producing for Skunk Records. The working relationship was so successful that the pair decided to begin a collaborative project then and there.

Resident Advisor 117: Portable and Bodycode

Alan Abrahams is a busy man. Recording under two full-time aliases, running his own label, playing at mansions on the Welsh/English border, it's all in a day's work for the Lisbon resident. With excellent releases spread across label's like Perlon, Spectral Sound, Yore and more, that hard work seems to be paying off. That quality imprints are requesting his services is hardly surprising, however: Abrahams work as Bodycode and Portable is both accessible and idiosyncratic, bringing his varied influences (born in Africa, Abrahams spent many years in England soaking up dance culture) to bear on his productions. On his RA podcast, Abrahams highlights these touches by putting together an exclusive live set, drawing from Bodycode and Portable material to take listeners on a journey to the outer regions of house and techno, where flutes and theremins seem just as necessary as kick drums and hi-hats.

Resident Advisor 116: Gerd Janson

Robert-Johnson resident Gerd Janson offers up some computer incarnations for world peace on this week's RA podcast.We're not quite sure what to tell you about Gerd Janson to be honest. In his lengthy and witty answers to our questions below, he tells you just about everything you need to know about his philosophy on DJing, life, and the music business. The bottom line for the Frankfurt-based DJ, though, is that if you're taking things too seriously, you're seriously missing the point. Whether it be via his Running Back label, which has boasted releases by Mark E, Prosumer, and Todd Osborn; his DJ sets at the vaunted Robert-Johnson club in Frankfurt; as a music journalist; or as a team member of the Red Bull Music Academy, Janson's love of music is obvious. And, on his RA podcast, you'll hear how that love manifests itself in the house he grew up listening to at Mannheim's Milk Club, the cosmic disco he's been compiling on Sonar Kollektiv's Computer Incarnations for World Peace series, and even a cover of Ricardo Villalobos. (Or is that Gerd just joking around again?) It's an hour-and-a-half journey that you'll most likely want to take over and over again.

"Roar," Patrice Bäumel's debut 12-inch for the Get Physical label has been turning heads from all corners of the DJ universe, earning raves from jocks as varied as DJ Hell and Erol Alkan. "Mutant pop" is what Bäumel calls his productions. But that same satisfying blend of melody and rhythm that has infused his work for Trapez and Get Physical could just as easily describe his DJ sets as well. As a resident at the sadly departed Club 11, Bäumel along with his DJing partner Nuno Dos Santos, focuses on the melodic side of things and here on his RA podcast, you can hear the long sweeping chords of DJ Koze's remix of Sascha Funke's "Mango" and Jens Zimmermann's "Heaven." In between all of this uplift? Snippets from a BBC documentary on cats. We'll leave that one to Mr. Bäumel to explain…

Mix of the Month: Bombilla

Bombilla is a 22 year old German producer. He first started gaining an interest in alternative music in 1993. When he was 18, the whole electronic dance music scene started to shape the way he started looking at and making music. A few years later, he started dj'ing private parties and eventually larger clubs in the Konstanz area.

Happy Caps EP is Bombilla's first release and is now available on Beatport.

Luciano August Promo Mix

LUCIANO ESSE has an expert knowledge of music in all its expression. He started to work in 1990 with "Enjoy Group", a collective which changed the way house music was percieved in south of Italy. From 1995 till 1999 he worked with "House Essentials" and became one of the best promoters in his country. Bunker Podcast 26: Akiko Kiyama

Akiko was born in Tokyo,JAPAN, 1982. She has been surrounded by classical music education since she was a young girl. At the age of 14, she was absorbed in Drum'N'Bass that was occurring in London at the time, and it was then that she made a commitment to club music, to pursue and evolve with the ever changing sound of techno.

She started to create her own tracks with a laptop since 2002 and has been performing at many of the clubs in Tokyo with artists locally and from abroad.

She has been releasing tracks for some time now, her original track was picked for the compilation 'Newsdays' EP from Sud Electronic in July 2004. Also her first solo EP 'Dimension', released on Sud Electronic in October 2004, which got great reviews by top world class DJ's. In November 2005, her track on Contexterrior, was selected by Richie Hawtin in his well received mix 'DE9 Transitions'.

Her sound twist and turns and surprises you at every listen, they have the strangest way of creeping up on you, then finally enveloping you into Akiko's world. This year she will be moving to Berlin to follow through with her commitment to dance music and to develop her style further, what better place to do so. She also has several solo EP's coming out in 07 on a few reputable labels such as Safari, District of Corruption, Revolver, Thema and more on Contexterrior.
