Bunker Podcast 25: Alex Smoke

Glaswegian based artist Alex Smoke recently released his second album, 'Paradolia' on Soma Records. Paradolia is defined as the human ability to creatively perceive coherent images in randomness. This is an unusual word by anyone's standard but then Alex Menzies (aka Mr Smoke) is an artist very far from the usual. A Rorschach test his is not, more a sonic experiment that explores the parameters of Alex Smoke's potent psyche. Alex remarks on its significance 'I guess the album is the pattern and the tracks the randomness as I didn't have a plan to tie everything together. I also think it describes really well the appeal of music that at first sounds random but makes sense as a whole.'

In the field of electronic music, Gregor Tresher is by no means a debutant. For more than six years the thirty-year old DJ and producer from Rhine-Main area gathered merits with his project Sniper Mode, modernizing the algorithms of Electro. The reason why some people see Gregor as one of the newcomers of 2006 are his current releases under his real name, which define the interface between Techno and Electro excitingly new.

With the release of his 'Still' EP Gregor Tresher has definitely found his place among the most important German producers in electronic music. Up to now several tracks mark the highlights of this exciting development: 'Neon' and 'Still' (both on Datapunk), 'The Now People' (Great Stuff Records), Gregor's Komm-Remix for Sven Vaeth and Anthony Rother (#2 Best Remix 2005 in German Raveline Magazine) or his 'Full Range Madness' for Cocoon's Compilation F. And not only Sven Vaeth upscaled all of those tracks by playing them on heavy rotation in his sets for months.

Listen React 015: July 2008 w/Xpansul

Santiago Ferrer, also known as Xpansul, started djing in 1993. Since then, he has played in most of the biggest clubs and festivals all over Spain and Europe. Xpansul's sound as a dj is techno, his sets are a journey through electronic dance music, in which the axis Detroit-Chicago-Berlin-Cologne is the driver and all his other musical influences are the passengers. Since 1998, Santi starts writing and producing music as well, getting a really good response from the crowd and critics to his releases on labels such as Audiodrome, Options, Isoghi, Syl.Label and Soundplant, sometimes working solo and sometimes with his partner Daweed.

In 2003 Xpansul starts his own labels Discos De Lata and MSX manged along Daweed and Miguel Mendoza respectively, which has taken him to a solid position as a producer and label manager on an international level, thanks to the success achieved by his releases on this labels and other releases on Software Records, Sindicato Records and Random Dynamics. And it was back then when Xpansul met well respected producer Alexi Delano and they started a series of collaborations, both original tracks and remixes, that have been put out on labels such as Plus 8, Truesoul, Frankie Recs and Leftroom, taking Xpansul one step ahead in his already promising career.

His tracks have been supported by some of the most influential Djs of the international scene, being played and appearing in charts of artists such as Richie Hawtin, Magda, Troy Pierce, Joel Mull, Alexi Delano, Adam Beyer, Paco Osuna, Davide Squillace, Tadeo, Miss Kittin, Jaumatic, John Dahlback, Djinxx, Oliver Lieb, Marco Carola, Angel Molina, Laurent Garnier, Leandro Gomez, Dj Hell, Fabrice Lig, Jori Hulkkonnen, James Holden, and Tiga. Xpansul is now preparing his Live PA set as a new challenge for the new times to come in order to transmit his personal view of realtime creation and performing. Using new and old tools such as laptop, controller and analogue synths Xpansul will recreate his working process in the studio in front of the crowd. Available from May 2007, more music by Xpansul will soon be released on Leftroom, Is This A Label?, Immigrant, Pariter, Apnea. Stay tuned!!

July's Promo Mix Spot: Terry Lee Brown, Jr.

For years Terry Lee Brown Jr. has been considered as a member of the international elite of House producers, and like no other, he has developed the subgenre Tech-House. In the USA and England his first two albums became successes of note and the media got a surprise when they found out Mr. Brown is actually a German.

Terry Lee Brown Jr, alias Norman Feller, began DJing in 1989 and soon thereafter released his first tracks on vinyl under various pseudonyms. 1994 was the turning point for Norman when he decided to dedicate himself totally to music In the following year he invented the house-oriented project (alter-ego) Terry Lee Brown Jr. which allowed him to create his own sound. Plastic City, which was at that time still a very young label, offered Terry an outlet for his music and he has stayed true to this label ever since.

After the success of his first 12' releases came his debut Album Brother For Real in spring of 1996. This release was a true milestone for Tech-House and incorporated elements of Jungle, Trance and Easy Listening. The public response to Brother For Real was gigantic, and not limited to scenesters. Muzik (12/96), England's most respected dance music magazine chose Brother For Real as one of the top ten albums of 1996 (along with albums from artists like DJ Shadow, Fugees, Underworld and Faithless). Marshall Jefferson, the Chicago House legend, honored Terry in an album review by simply stating 'He is God' (Raveline 11/1996).

In fall of 1997 Terry's second album Chocolate Chords garnered further praise and matched the success of Bother For Real. In America Mixmag chose this second effort as one of the top 5 albums of the year.

Terry Lee Brown Jr. is not only a respected producer, but also a much sought-after DJ. This side of the artist is apparent when one listens to the compilation series Terry's Cafe 1-5. These mixed CDs once again found resonance in the music press and received rave reviews from Muzik, Urb, XLR8R and other national and international magazines. But the story doesn't end there. Remixes from TLB Jr. of such artists as Gabrielle (Rise), Nalin & Kane (Talkin' About), Louise (Let's Go Round Again), Paul Van Dyk (For An Angel), Paris Red (Love Hurts), and Future Funk (Music Takes You High) secured his reputation as a true Remix-Artist.

The third and latest album From Dub Til Dawn is a product of two years work and continues the tradition of Terry's genre-bending House-sound. From Dub Til Dawn brings together bass-heavy housegrooves with warm atmospheric planes and fragmented vocals. Sound and rhythm are the most important in this case. Fusions of House and Dub or Two-Step round out the album. Pay attention to the track Take Your Time, which Terry produced in cooperation with his friend and label-mate Timewriter.

Today Terry Lee Brown Junior is one of the most happening and respected House Artists around. This is probably due to the passion and love he invests in his uncompromising productions and mix sets. His albums and mix CDs have shown the world that House music not only works on the dancefloor, but also in a comfy chair.

Track of the Week: Superpitcher vs. M83

M83 is an electronic music group consisting of Anthony Gonzalez (and formerly Nicolas Fromageau), and was formed in Antibes, France in 2001. The musical style owes something to the shoegazing genre in its extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instrumentals, though M83's songs employ considerably less guitar than most shoegazing bands such as My Bloody Valentine. For the third album released by M83, Before the Dawn Heals Us, Gonzalez decided to part from Fromageau (after an emotionally distressing tour for Dead Cities) and record mainly on his own, with the help of a few other musicians. Aksel Schaufler better known by his stage name Superpitcher, is a German producer affliated with Cologne's Kompakt music label. Superpitcher made his first appearance on Kompakt's Total 2 compilation album in 2000 with the song "Shadows". In 2001, he contributed a track to Kompakt's first Speicher 12" and released Heroin, a three-track 12" with three different sounds; "Tomorrow" was later included on that year's Total 3. On 2002's Total 4 there was another track by Schaufler, an electro-pop cover of Brian Eno's "Baby's on Fire". Soon after that, Schaufler released his second 12", Yesterday, which featured re-workings of the songs "Tomorrow" and "Heroin". He also made another appearance that year on Kompakt's fourth Speicher 12". Since stepping out, Schaufler has done steady remixing work for the likes of Dntel, Carsten Jost and several others. In early 2004, Superpitcher released Here Comes Love. A year later, he released a mix album for Kompakt called Today. Superpitcher and Michael Mayer have collaborated under the pseudonym Supermayer. Their debut album, Save The World, was released on September the 17th 2007 in Europe and September the 25th in the USA. ************************************************************************************ With 2 great forces behind the sounds of this track, there's no letdown in it's final product. Past Love Parades have occurred in Tel Aviv, Mexico City, Acapulco, Vienna, Cape Town, San Francisco, Leeds, Sydney, Santiago, Caracas, Rio de Janeiro. This event inspired the 1998 Dance classic "Meet Her At The Love Parade" by Da Hool and is the subject of the Madonna song "Dear Jessie". Frisky Radio 7/18/2008

Cassino & Labèn, or rather Andrea Cassino and Alex Labèn, were born in the small town of located in the heart of Italy, where they presently reside. The pair met in 1999, while the two were working as DJ and PR in the same club. Right from the beginning, their friendship, the same way of thinking, the same feelings about music turned into real passion. The mutual understanding between the two turned out to be highly positive and driven by an uncontrollable will to do something tangible, they began their project called Cassino & Labèn, in 2001.

Their live sets composed in Ableton Live double laptop performace, consist of an endless excursion among different sound combinations, from break beat to deep, from progressive to electronic house, providing an overwhelming voyage to discover new elegant and exquisite sonorities. Not to forget that the project Cassino & Labèn began with the union between producer (Andrea Cassino) and DJ (Alex Laben) and this is the reason why their expressive method is always changing.

Resident Advisor 111: Stimming

Apart from the ubiquitous Johnny D, it's hard to think of a producer more hotly tipped at the moment than Martin Stimming. The Hamburg producer records mostly for the hometown Diynamic imprint, crafting gently wobbly and highly melodic tracks that tug ever-so-carefully at the heartstrings. It's a sound that's caught on among the DJ elite, as each of his two most recent collaborative productions, 'Madeline' (with Einmusik) and 'Radar' (with H.O.S.H.), have threatened the top of the RA charts. With a stunning track on the way called 'Una Pena' that samples Chilean folk singer Violetta Parra, we're guessing that run isn't likely to change.On his RA podcast, Stimming doesn't go in for the usual DJ antics. Instead, his is a live set, composed solely of his own original productions and remixes. It's a testament to his skill that it's both a cohesive document and one that doesn't sound like the same track repeated for an hour's time.
