Bunker Podcast 13: Lee Curtiss

A Western Michigan native and long-time Detroit resident, Lee Curtiss has been forging his uniquely backwoods, yet avant-garde and primal brand of deep and twisted dance music since the late 1990’s. A constantly changing and ever-eager student to his craft, Lee’s finger has been pressed upon, if not thrust into, the throbbing aorta of underground dance music for quite some time – even if his production skills and amazing live PA have only recently begun to garner the attention of techno and house music’s elite. Growing up between the two poles of Chicago and Detroit organized Lee’s approach to production and DJing squarely between the grooving, deep house sounds of artists like Derrick Carter, and the life changing work of techno producers such as Ricardo Villalobos, Zip (aka Dimbiman), Matthew Dear, Peter Ford and Richie Hawtin. Over the past year Lee has begun to tour extensively in America and Europe with his music’s dark, sexy, and uncompromising singularity have earned him coveted performance slots at the 2007 DEMF and Mutek festivals, his move to Berlin has set a level of commitment to touring, producing and DJing. Curtiss was recently named by Matthew Dear as one of they key figures of emerging talent in URB magazine’s next 100 and is present on mixes and charts of the top DJs in electronic music.

Born in 1978, Luciano is a DJ since 1993 and a producer since 1997. In the mid-90's, he was promoting Sense Club and Encuentros con la Technocultura in Santiago de Chile in the company of many initiators of the Latin American electronic music scene: Senor Coconut AKA Atom Heart, Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack & brother Adrian Schopf, Washington Miranda, Argenix Brito, Microman etc. He's played radio stations and DJed clubs & events in Santiago and Latin America, Germany, Spain & Holland, settling in Switzerland in 2000 to release on Mental Groove Records in Geneva, where he also holds a residency at the Weetamix club. His releases appear on the Transmat, Perlon, Lo-Fi Stereo, Bruchstuecke and Klang Elektronik record labels.Luciano's mixed Swiss & Chilean identity shows in his music, a somewhat mystical blend of deep techno & electro that integrates southern elements in rhythms and colorful patterns in sound. His collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos (Playhouse, Perlon, Warp, Force Inc etc.) as Sense Club are especially rewarding, as is his partnership with Pier Bucci and Argenix Brito as Monne Automne.Mellowing his style as times goes by, getting more experimental and spacey with a fresh style of his own, Luciano’s production is destined to the wiser dancefloors that have enjoyed his live sets in Peru, Chile, Argentina, the U.S., Spain, Germany & Switzerland. DJ-wise, Luciano’s trade relies on groovy & minimal.

Being a hobby break-dancer back in the days was the first step for eleven year-old Martin Landsky to discover his passion for black dance music. Using the pause-key of his tape deck he started to create minimal loop tracks of early funk and rap classics for his performances on the street as well as in contests. His interest in manipulating sound was unstoppable. Young Martin Landsky spent all his money to buy a second tape deck and a primitive mixer. After that he took his father’s pitchable turntable and "raped" his family‘s Bontempi organ to design rudimental megamixes of his favourite tracks.Influenced by an older friend who was DJing as well, nightlife became more interesting for Martin, he started to spin at school parties and similar events at the age of fourteen. His improved skills led to frequent bookings at private parties in Hamburg.

Resident Advisor: 100th podcast 4/28/08

Perhaps the most celebrated techno DJ in the world, Hawtin has been at the cutting edge of dance music for more than a decade-and-a-half. Whether it’s his future-forward productions and mixes, his work in developing Final Scratch, or in defining minimal techno via his Minus label, Richie Hawtin has become one of electronic music’s most recognisable figures.

What makes Hawtin so fascinating in 2008, though, is his continued interest in the newest technology and sounds available. At the beginning of the year, Hawtin and the rest of the Minus imprint underwent '10 Weeks of Silence', a break that saw Hawtin officially jettison vinyl altogether. It's not a new thing for many - plenty of DJs have gone the digital route - but, per usual, Richie is using his new setup to challenge the limits of what a traditional DJ set.

With his RA.100 mix, Hawtin gives us an exclusive look into how the set is coming together, weaving together 60 minutes of snippets from deep house, techno, minimal and more. It's a testing lab for what might just be the next DE9 mix. Enjoy.

Bodytonic Podcast 9: Tadeo

He is influenced by various branches of electronic music, especially by Detroit techno and Christian Vogel, Neil Landstrum, Plastikman or Jeff Mills productions. In his first stage, he creates together with Dj Slick the collective Domestic Techno, carrying out parties in several basements of their city. Throughout time he has tested almost every single style inside electronic and dance music. After a large period of techno investigation and development, Tadeo runs his actualart collective Javha oriented to all kinds of art expressions, and Cyclical Tracks, a conceptual techno-dub label. He is closely associated with two other Spanish techno producers - Alex Under, and Damian Schwartz. In this second stage, he purifies his technique and studies with care the connection with audience, trying to make this connection the principal resource of his sets. Since then and little by little, minimal and electronic sounds start to become a natural rule both in his sets and productions. He also has predilection for dub and sounds which emanate from jamaican music.

Ibiza Voice Podcast: Agnes

Agnès always dreamed about being a musician. A Jazz drummer for example, being scheduled in White Horse for two weeks and the next two in Mourmansk or elsewhere where people are just real. But he's not. He's just a farmer out of nowhere able to handle computers. The redneck understood bits and bytes well beyond everybody's believes and bets... So what do you want to expect from that kind of guys ? Honesty, straight forward thinking and sympathy. If this is what you want, ask for him, if you need the usual hypocrisy and fake ass shit, pass your way. there's plenty of those doing that far better then him.

Bunker Podcast 10: Kate Simko

Chicago-based Kate Simko is a classical pianist turned left field house and techno producer. Releasing music on labels such as Spectral Sound, Kupei Musika and Traum, Kate draws from a wide range of influences, combining her sense of melody and structure with her background in Chicago house and Detroit techno. Whether playing live or DJ’ing, Kate’s musical selection maintains a warm, soulful character, full of funky bass lines and loose rhythms.

Growing up studying piano and music theory, Kate discovered underground dance music during her teens and began DJ’ing on college radio in the late 90's. At this time, Kate made a switch from a degree in classical piano to electronic music composition. In 2001, Kate moved to Santiago, Chile, where she continued her studies in music composition and met Andres Bucci. Bucci and Simko combined forces and have since recorded two full-length records together as Detalles (Traum , Kupei Musika).

A versatile DJ, Kate was named one of the Top 10 DJ's in Chicago by XLR8R magazine. Her music has received positive remarks in zines such as The Wire, XLR8R, de:Bug, Mixmag, URB, BPM and Remix and her Detalles project was named one of the 'Next 100' artists by URB magazine. Kate has performed at festivals such as Mutek (Montreal and Chile), the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Worldtronics (Berlin), and has played beside a myriad of genre defining artists throughout the United States, Europe and South America.

Back in her hometown of Chicago, Kate is honing her talents, producing and performing full time. Kate is continually evolving as an artist, combining her wide range of influences into her own music, creating a unique personal sound that crosses genre borders, blending rich textures, melodies and intricate programming with funky bass and groove.

Fergie seems to have been around for while now, yet at 28, we forget that he was just a lad when he began the amazing journey that is still riding high and he has never had a stronger and more vibrant aural identity.
2008 couldn’t be busier for Fergie. Regularly playing at clubs such as Firefly, Shine, The Stiff Kitten, he maintains an international pedigree which has seen him play at Sonar(Barcelona) Metropolis(Bulgaria),Meganite(Ibiza), Magazinni Generalli (Italy), the Berlin Love Parade and of course almost a decade in Ibiza. Add to that a whirlwind of gigs that took in Hong Kong, Australia, Israel, Poland, and America where he even done a 7 day tour of the Curran-Holding Prison Correctional Facility (CFCF) in Philadelphia which wasn’t listed on the tour schedule!
The producer of stunningly good techno that has seen the likes of Slam, Laurent Garnier and Phil Kieran and Dubfire smash floors all over with his tunes and the man whose Excentric project is making a real impact in clubland on three different levels; pushing new talent, putting on events and releasing exciting music.
Fergie is firing on all cylinders at the moment with his recently released THE ME EP on Excentric Muzik climbing high in the techno charts on Beatport. It’s gaining huge support from some of the industry’s most respected DJs, with across the board appeal to many techno exponents. Add to this a collaboration with Gregor Tresher that spawned ‘Recluse’ recently released on the on the Great Carnival Stuff album. A further Great Stuff Olympic album due to be released later this year will feature a track from each country with Fergie representing Ireland. Re-mixes due out include Bigger than Jesus ‘Itchy Glitchy Spider’ (Fergie rmx) on Silver Planet and King Unique ‘Hinode’ (Fergie rmx) due out on their Curfew imprint.

Deep Dish & Cedric Gervais

Since his very first EP, released in 1995 on Ozone records, Olivier Raymond aka Oxia has been at the forefront of the French electronic music scene. With his friend The Hacker and their label Goodlife, Olivier has helped regenerate the sound of French productions. Before taking a sneak preview to the future, let’s step back in time a little … to the beginning … yes to 1971 … Born in Grenoble (France) Olivier’s musical talents were far from being predestined. None of his family “walked the boards” nor played any sort of instrument. Against all odds, via a rogue gene perhaps, Olivier’s musical soul was formed. From a very young age, Black Music is Olivier’s preferred companion: The Jackson Five; Prince; Chic … Disco followed when Olivier experienced “Cerrone in concert” in 1978 with his parents – one of life’s defining moments as he refers to it. Only a few months later his parents bought him his first synthesizer. During his college years, Olivier befriended StĂ©phane Deschezeaux, another young man passionate about Black Music. They made their debut on a local radio station presenting a ‘Funk’ radio programme. Olivier, only 15 years old, started mixing with a simple cassette player and deck (without pitch). Soon tiring of his limited tools, he invested in a proper pair of decks and began mixing funk, rock, pop… at student parties. Other influences are added to his repertoire: electro-funk of Afrika Bambaataa, italo-disco, new wave from Depeche Mode, New Order… The early house scene had just started to take its form (Todd Terry, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Marshall Jefferson).

“ For us the house scene wasn’t new but a continuation of the Funk movement”
