Resident Advisor 92: Derek Plaslaiko

Few people in the United States would call it lucky to be born in the suburbs outside of Detroit, Michigan. But for Derek Plaslaiko’s musical education, it was a boon: with easy access to recordings of the Electrifying Mojo and the Wizard’s DJ sets, Plaslaiko learned from the Godfathers of Detroit techno. It’s served him well over the course of his DJ career, moving from opening slots at Midwestern raves to a coveted residency at New York City’s longest-running minimal techno party, the Bunker. This month, Plaslaiko takes over another job: He’ll be touring the United States (and Toronto) under the banner of Spectral Sound’s “Death Is Nothing to Fear” residency. February, March and April will see Plaslaiko bringing his set of driving minimal out of the Big Apple and into just about every corner of the country. His RA podcast is a good taste of what’s to come. Over the course of an hour-and-a-half, Plaslaiko moves from tool techno by the likes of Alland Byallo and Takuya Morita to more melodic fare like Tiefschwarz’s edit of Einzelkind’s ‘Spam Bot’ and Audion’s recent remix of Matt John’s ‘Olga Dancekowski’. It may take a bit to get started, but hold tight: you’re in for a treat.

Holland's beloved house music-loving homeboy, Laidback Luke is on an international mission to rock clubs, win hearts and top charts. A producer and DJ with immense talent, tonnes of spirit and a steely determination to succeed, he has been on a worldwide search for the ultimate in dancefloor energy since the mid-1990s. "Music is an amazing tool that can evoke powerful memories and emotions," says Luke with a smile. "And I will not rest until I've given my best: I want to share as much music as possible with as many people as possible." And in 2006, with an incredibly impressive discography of 100+ recordings and a DJ diary that takes him from his studio near Amsterdam to clubs all over the world, including Pacha and Space (Ibiza), Ministry of Sound (London), Industria (Antwerp) and Opium (Miami), it would seem that Luke is well on the way to achieving his goals.

Bunker Podcast 3: Derek Plaslaiko

Derek Plaslaiko delves into the realm of dance music in which the head and body are equally active. The records he plays click and whirl inside the brain while the low end keeps the body busy. Mixing lush techno with jackin house and a healthy dose of Detroit classics, Plaslaiko is known for his creative track selection, seamlessly woven by pin-point mixing skills that rival international DJs like Richie Hawtin, Marco Carola, and Laurent Garnier (all of whom Plaslaiko has shared deck time with). A lifelong music obsessive, Plaslaiko began DJing in 1995, becoming a regular on Detroit's weekend rave circuit. He was a virtual resident at the city's legendary Syst3m Poorboy and Analog parties, as well as the weekly resident at Motor-Detroit's Tuesday night throw-down, Family. Derek was invited by Carl Craig to play the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000. In addition to events across the Midwest, he has played internationally (in Dresden and Koln) and has taken to the decks at clubbing institutions such as Smartbar in Chicago and Tronic Treatment in New York City. Plaslaiko has played alongside Josh Wink, John Acquaviva, Kevin Saunderson, Richardo Villalobos, Baby Ford, Ectomorph, Matthew Herbert, Mike Huckaby, Green Velvet, and Luke Slater. Trained in the masterful arts of Motown DJing, Derek Plaslaiko is heading up yet another wave of Detroit talent poised to rejuvenate dancefloors across the globe.

During all those years Virginia Nascimento never wanted to walk just one path. In fact she came a long way from writing, composing and arranging her own vocal melodies to producing her own songs and to DJing which she started six years ago. The young Brazilian learned that every new job brings experience and new perspectives. Furthermore, you meet a lot of new and interesting people. All these influences melt into Virginias very own distinctive sound. For her DJ sets Virginias main goal is variety. Her sets vary from minimal to vocal and what makes her sets so special is that she sings live to her records. Her vocal spectrum easily covers Jazz, Pop and House, a variety that will also reflect in her first full length debut album on which she is working right now.

Resident Advisor 90: Sasse

With releases on more than twenty labels under eight pseudonyms in the past 15 years, Sasse gets around. His Moodmusic label is the epitome of good-time house music, featuring releases from Spirit Catcher, Dirt Crew and Henrik Schwarz (Sasse's partner in crime in Asshole & Gentleman). This goodwill has even gotten him into the good graces of one Tracey Thorn: Sasse co-wrote 'It's All True' on her new album along with Darshan Jesrani and Ewan Pearson.Besides producing, Sasse also DJs, holding down residencies at Berlin's Panoramabar and Weekend. You can also catch his next month also in the Austrian Alps at Snowbombing if you’re in the vicinity. Sasse’s RA podcast is a taster of his club style, moving from trance-inflected house music to the emotional Euro-techno of the Daso's 'Thujon' and Lee Jones' newie 'Aria' before slowing down with Penner & Mulder's elegiac closer 'Are You Lost?'. No need to buckle up: with Sasse at the wheel, you know it's going to be a smooth ride.

It’s not often that two people discover a friendship as special as the Berlin-based creative duo M.A.N.D.Y. (Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung). Two kindred souls drawn to one another at a young age, throughout their many harmonious years of acquaintance they’ve shared complementary callings in life. The first call rang when Patrick’s family moved from Zurich to Saarbrücken at the age of 15; his friendship with Philipp was immediate and vibrant, and the inseparable pair immersed themselves in sports, compilation tapes, Tears For Fears and Janis Joplin records.
Individually, Philipp kept busy shirking his keyboard lessons and borrowing his friend’s drum kit, while Patrick delved deeply into art and painting. When some older friends filled their stereos with Chicago mixtapes and the sounds of early acid house in the late 80’s, their lifelong obsessive love with electronica began. It was only a short matter of time before their lives were overtaken: days spent in record shops revolved into bright nights in Frankfurt’s glittery clubs and parties, weeks bled into months. University pulled them apart as the years flew by, both heading to different cities to pursue their studies (Patrick in Frankfurt studying economics, Philipp in Switzerland to study hotel and tourism), but they eventually came back around to each other in Frankfurt to pursue their passions, specifically their insatiable appetite for parties.

Over recent years, Sam Geiser aka Deetron has emerged as a rising star in the Techno world. His popularity as a Producer has flourished in tandem with his reputation as a dynamic three-deck DJ, and as the latter discipline propelled him across the globe, his work for a growing roster of record labels further cemented his position as a genuine talent within the International scene. His list of musical achievements stretch back to the early nineties - and on paper it makes for quite an impressive body of work. This is all the more remarkable, considering the fact that Sam is still 26 years of age. This can probably be explained, in part, by his family background.Born in Bern, Switzerland, Music was a constant in the Geiser family home. Sam's father's activities as a jazz musician ensured that he was surrounded by music from a very early age, sewing the seeds of his own musical interests. But it was Hip-Hop that encouraged this to flourish into an active involvement in music, during his teens. Sam soaked-up the music of Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest, and Prince Paul like a sponge, and was quick to realise the role of the turntable within this context, taking up DJing in 1992.Early Hip-House producers, such as Todd Terry, also captured his attention, and Sam began to make the transition to more 4/4 orientated sounds - picking up on the now classic output of Chicago and Detroit-based electronic musicians and introducing this into the sets he was, by now, playing around his home town, and further afield in Switzerland.

Dave Robertson is one of the most influential young talents in the UK tech house scene, with a cool diverse sound that has support from the biggest djs on the planet, and demand from the finest record labels in the industry. Dave’s production portfolio continues to grow like wildfire, and there is no let up in the steady stream of bass driven, mind bending dance music that has helped him stamp his reputation as being one of the best new producers on the scene. In 2004 'Can It Happen' and 'Dr Robotnik' on Hearing Aid caused a monumental stir in the house scene receiving plays from Sasha, Nick Warren and Lee Burridge. Dave’s 'For Her Addiction EP' swiftly followed with support from Pete Tong, James Zabiela, and Sander Klienenberg, who featured the productions on his Essential mix from Miami in 2004. Next came '3 Weeks On The Trot' on Evasive, and 'Slang For Funky' that was licensed to Sound In Motion mixed by James Zabiela. 2006 was a massive year for Dave. “1 Dunk Wonder” reached number 1 in the DJ download chart and number 2 in the Beatport house chart, “ Pressure Cooker” and “Got The Bug” went to Cosmonote, “Mine and His EP” produced with James Talk was signed to Spoken Recordings, and yet another track entitled “Glitch” went to Saved. But it was his collaboration with Jon Gurd on “The Rendition” that truly announced his arrival on to the scene. Extensive plays on Radio 1 from Pete Tong and Fergie were followed by major support from Lee Burridge, Sander Kleinenberg and D.Ramirez, whilst Carl Cox, Steve Lawler and Nic Fanciulli included the track in their Summer Essential Mixes.

As very charming minimal house with Black Forest funk“ a reviewer from the United States once assessed the first publication of Joachim Spieth, born 1979 who doesn’t come from the solitude of the Black Forest, but from a contemplative hicktown near Stuttgart. “Abi 99” appeared at the freshly established label “Kompakt”, which combined the outrider labels of German minimal Techno, “Profan” and “Studio 1”, which up to that point had never featured any artist outside of Cologne. When the british DJ and cult presenter John Peel played the EP shortly after its release in his radio show, it became clear that the years of research with synths and drum machines had been worth while. Inspired by the public interest, Spieth remixed Egoexpress on Ladomat during the following year, and added “You Don’t Fool Me”, the follow up-12" inch on “Kompakt” and – on the side - published his debut album “Fluchtpunkt” at the label “onitor”. With the help of his ability to present a constant variable and diverse musical performance, he quickly was able to win new listeners within the dance music scene, his preferred terrain actually being somewhere between the intersection of minimal Technoscapes, grim sounding Techhouse and playful Ambient

Mix of the Week: Marcus Watkins

Marcus Watkins from Random Access Recordings has put something really special for you all to help celebrate Martin Luther King Day. We proudly present to you 'Freedom', a DJ mix of tracks from the DoBox compilation 'Resurgence'. Here's what Marcus himself has to say about it...

In today's world, freedom is taken for granted. And with so much conflict and not much resolution, it is important that we find common ground. Music is that common ground. It is a
universal language spoken and understood by all. What is so great about our music is that it unites us as "one nation." "One Nation" underground, that is. We come together to celebrate, dance, rejoice and express ourselves, and don't care about what no one thinks. In my opinion, if Dr. Martin Luther King wasalive, he would need to look no further than electronic music to get a glimpse of his dream. This DJ mix is dedicated to a never forgotten hero, Dr. Martin Luther King on his birthday and to all of the freedom fighters worldwide. Keep hope alive!!!

New School

Russell first started DJ’ing in 1998 after attending clubs such as Godskitchen & Gatecrasher and was by inspired by the DJ’s he was hearing then such as Paul Oakenfold, Tall Paul & Sasha and was initially caught up in the trance explosion that took place at that time.

After years of playing trance around various clubs in the UK that included Godskitchen & Passion and appearing on the same bill as DJ’s such as Erick Morillo & Armin Van Buuren & Eddie Halliwell he decided to make the move to playing house and hasn’t looked back since.

Since then Russell has played many gigs across the UK and played alongside many of the Nu-Breed of DJ’s including Funkagenda, James Talk, Mark Knight and more!

Russells style of house has also seen him make his debut at The Gallery where he played alongside the ever popular King unique, he has also made his debut at The Honey Club in Brighton.
