Dance under the blue

A professional with deep industry ties and a long list of accomplishments, Anja Schneider remains an amateur in the literal sense of the word. Where others might settle into a single specialty, the Berlin-based multitasker is the founder of the successful mobilee label, a talented musician, a sought-after club DJ and a well-known radio personality. As KISS FM’s producer of special features, Anja developed the KISS FM Loveboat, which followed her move to Radio Fritz in 1997 and is now known as Fritz Loveradio. The spectacular event unites the dancefloor and the airwaves, inviting 50 internationally renowned DJs to spin a 50-hour marathon. In 2003, the project won the German Dance Awards’ “Best National Radio Programme” award.

Native Berliner Sascha Funke's warm take on tech-house is rather clean and very melodic, quite possibly catering to the Kompakt label's love for the term pop more than any of the other producers on the Cologne, Germany, label's roster. Throughout 2000 and early 2001, the perfectly named Funke issued a trio of 12" singles on the label -- Campus, Safety First, and Drei Auf Drei. During the same period, Funke also released a pair of singles for Berlin's Bpitch Control imprint -- Luftschloß and 2:1 Fur Die Liebe. Some of his productions for Kompakt have appeared on the Schaffelfieber, Total 2, and Total 3 compilations.

Spending most of his waking hours experimenting with new sounds, James Burnham is a serious studio head and at just 20 years old it’s obvious that this guy has also got some serious talent. Born in 1986 in the North Eastern industrial town of Hartlepool - a make your own entertainment kind of place – Burnski set about doing just that. At the tender age of 13, he skipped his science exam and set off with his Dad to buy some second hand decks he found advertised in the Hartlepool Mail. Feeding a vinyl addition with his paper round money, Burnski built up his collection making sure he was hearing a broad spectrum of new music, this coupled with spending many an ‘educational’ hour on the floor of the Middleborough Empire and later regularly traveling south to clubbing institution Basics in Leeds.Since releasing his first record on Simon Baker’s top quality imprint Infant, Burnski has already been picked up by several other labels, such as Morris Audio, Exquisite Music, Bay Street Recordings as well as cool German imprint Trapez. Burnski’s sound has gone down really well in Germany and since the release of his “Coldcut’ EP on Trapez, he has built up quite a fan base over there, which has led to regular DJ dates at Berlin’s famous Watergate club. His talents haven’t gone unnoticed closer to home either, as he has also picked up a Basics residency along the way and more dates at some of the UK's coolest clubs such as The Key, The End, The Egg, TDK festival & Sankey’s Soap.

Music, Fun & good Friends is the life-philosophiy of Tom Wax, a man, who influenced the history of electronic music from the beginning as a DJ, producer and remixer and still is going strong . His legendary DJ-gigs and his uncountable releases made him famous and well known around the world .

Ciao!

Unfolding his double side of both DJ and producer, Martin Garcia's path draws along the electronic music local map a rising line that goes beyond its limits to burst into the international circle. His career, based on talent and hard work, led him both to share the decks with figures of the importance of Sasha, Danny Howells, Lexicon Avenue and John Creamer and to sign contracts with Perfecto Records, taking part of a consistent production duet with Hernan Cattaneo. Precisely, one of the reasons why his name stands out in the vernacular scene is the combining with equal success his work in the booth and in the studio.Since his beginnings as a professional DJ, Martin covered the big club circuit of Buenos Aires (Puente Mitre, La Embajada, Odeon) creating an interesting sound exploration. Taking characters of the rank of Sasha or John Digweed as referents, he evolved artistically through the years at the pace of the musical trends and new styles coming from the UK, adapting and incorporating them. Already considered a classic, his sets at the Clubland booth (Saturdays@Pacha Buenos Aires) allowed him to establish a close tie with the most demanding audience and test his flair at international level parties and festivals of the size of Creamfields, where he was an important feature in all its editions in Buenos Aires. Also at international height, he played in Peru, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Colombia where he performed alongside the well known DJ Sasha.

ALIVE!

Hailing from Southampton (UK) Tom Budden is fast gaining a reputation as one of the stand-out DJs of 2006. His tight control behind the decks, coupled with a forward thinking approach to dance music makes him a talent to look out for in the not too distant future.Toms passion for House music was realised as a teenager in the mid 90s. He developed an addiction to infectious grooves while on the dance floor, listening to DJs like Sasha play at his local club The Manor. Turn the clock forward and that enthusiasm is still there today in his DJing, undiluted and amplified, he is able to make a connection with the crowd in the same way his idols did with him:Tom doesnt just add to a party he regularly makes it. Everything about him is infectious, from those throbbing basslines that hook you in, to his enthusiastic demeanour behind the decks (Chris King, DJ Mag June 05)Not wanting to be pigeon-holed Tom has developed broad tastes ranging from deep techy house through to peak time monsters, electrified breaks and hypnotic 6am melodies. Tom is one of a special breed of DJs who can play warm up, end of night, or even start to finish. This versatility has brought him to the attention of several top promoters, earning him a set at Renaissance alongside James Zabiela and King Unique

In his teens, he used to tune into an illegal London radio station via a satellite programme. *It played techno, rave, hardcore and breaks non-stop at the weekend and, we never left the house all weekend in case we missed something?*, he laughs. When Yugoslavia imploded at the start of the 90s, Umek's native Slovenia was the first country to exit the federation. Although the tiny state had always been more liberal than other parts of Yugoslavia, Umek, who was beginning to DJ, found it hard to buy records in his home town of Ljubljana. This meant he had to drive eight hours to Germany to feed his growing vinyl addiction.*There's a huge passion for music here and that was part of our ritual,* he explains. Umek was also the first DJ to put on events in Slovenia in 1992-93. Although his first few parties were underground affairs, word of mouth soon meant that thousands of people were attending his events and, as he says himself,*the police and authorities didn't know what to do, so they just left us alone.*By this stage, Umek had honed his DJ skills and was spinning on three decks. He also started to book international guests and names like Billy Nasty and Surgeon were among the first guests to play at his parties.

Since then, UMEK has more than made a name for himself, in and out of Slovenia. This mix is a prime example.

Miss Sandy comes to turntables for the very first time in 1991 ... Going from Minimal to Techno, people like her for her music selection, her charisma, and her good technique. The audience is never insensible to this !She had ever played in the whole France » and even in Belgium, Spain and Switzerland with artists like : Electric indigo - Scan x - David caretta - Vitalic - Jamie Anderson - Damon wild - The Youngsters - Agoria - Oxia - Read head - Virtualian - Jack de Marseille - John Thomas - Tonio ... In 2001, she decides buying a home studio » and starts her own productions with a MPC2000/Ableton and a few expanders. She first programs Minimal and Techno tracks and still does it ! She likes to listen every kind of music, if it’s good to her, that’s what makes her dj sets and productions very rich and not formatted. « In 2004, she creates a band , TRIO NOISE, including a drum player ( Neil Conti ) and a guitar player ( Absynthe Provisoire) to manage a live fusion between techno and rock music, she loves this project, melting electro music with guitar riffs and live drums, it sounds great, original and pumping ! Sandy now intend to go deeper in production day after day and is thinking about collaborations with other producers in order to have more fun and make more records with different labels.

B-Sides

Proton Radio presents B-Sides, and this week's guest is none other than Chloe Harris. From the affinity of a Kraftwerk record sleeve, Chloe Harris has lived and breathed electronic sounds from the tender young age of five. Machine-like sounds coupled with autonomous looks inspired Chloe to repetitively listen to a sound that was just becoming prevalent throughout the world. While the world was listening to cheese-filled radio, Chloe was heading in other directions. While envisaging a career in DJ’ing, Chloe began work at Easy Street, a record store where she ordered in all forms of electronic music. With four years notched into her belt, she learnt how to sell the sounds to people who were there for other musical tastes. By the end, Chloe had become a patron for people who needed suggestions on where to head for the latest electro sounds and with groups like Underworld and the Crystal Method, it was an easy task. While keeping within this trend, Chloe also ensure that the more dubbed out sides such as experimental music were being directed to people she thought would feel it. With Chloe now a stalwart within the electronic music industry, you’ll know that if you ever encounter her, you’re in for a great time.

His sets are usual top of the night big room sets, and is precisely the reason why he has been elevated to the first string of Techno Electro Minimal dj/Producer. Baileys innovation and reluctancy to conform to a particular genre of music is booth refreshing and unique. Awarded 3 times in a row as best Belgium Techno Dj. "No nonsense, just great music. Techno is pure energy. Giving yourself one hundred percent to make people feel good. Keep an open mind and you'll get the proper respect." With the release of his album " Rude Boy" on May 17th (2004) and the following live & dj tour, Marco Bailey once again jumps ahead of the competition. Fifteen years of sacrifice and dedication have seen Belgian's number one dj break through the national borders to join the big league of worldwide techno artists. This didn't go unnoticed by leading man Carl Cox who asked him to sign onto his new label Intec Rec twice. Killer tracks on in-tec, Primate, Zync and Tortured, confirmed his strong reputation as a producer over the last eight years. In return he set up MB Elektronics & MB Selektions to release quality music and remixes by the skills of adam beyer, umek, ben sims, claude young, cristian varela, redhead, axel karakasis, takaaki itoh... In 2000, he joined forces with Spanish pride Cristian Varela to form Pornographic Recordings, a respected outlet for musicians as diverse as Umek, Gayle San, Oxia etc.. He is a selfmade man with a mission to entertain people with the love of pure techno music. He is...Marco Bailey.

Mix of the Week: Eddie Richards

It has been a very busy time for Eddie Richards, dance musics quintessential pioner and "Britains godfather of house and techno" (Mixmag). One of the first DJs to champion house back in the mid 8Os & one of the UK s original mix DJs residing at Londons Camden Palace, voted best club in the world, (Record Mirror.) Eddie became a key figure in a new music and cultural movement soon to explode worldwide. After playing at such influential and original underground clubs as Clink St. & Heaven in London and Manchester s Hacienda, he went one to headline the legendary UK pay parties Sunrise. Energy and Helter Skelter among countless others. Remix and production work led to the release of club classics; Acidman in 88 which hit National Top 20, followed by other chart topping remixes of Ralphi Rosario, Orbital and The Shamen. Since the mid 80 s he has been included in virtually every book, documentary and film on the dance culture and sought after all over the world for his flawless mix of deep bass driven techno with soulful & tough tribal house, a format he has always maintained, and has led him to be widely regarded as the pioneer of what is now known as tech-house.

Track of the Week: Roger Martinez

Roger is a young man with the dream to spread quality electronic music. Music that is presented in a way that the word “genre” becomes meaningless. Starting out in Club 02 in Portugal and Global Club in Lithuania, he moved on to the world capital of Dance music – Amsterdam. The Mazzo, NL Lounge, Club iT and Beachpop 2004 are some places where Roger gave “acte de présence”. Roger's recent performances at ("The World's Leading Dance Event") Sensation White in Amsterdam and at the legendary Dance Valley Festival have proven that he is ready to take part in the big league.

Release Yourself is a concept born many moons ago in the mind of the Grammy award winning artist Roger Sanchez. A seminal single (Release Yo Self) under Roger’s Transatlantic Soul production moniker back in 1996, a fully immersive party experience from 2001, a world-shaking radio show and CD compilation series since 2002, and a prolific podcast from 2006 – Release Yourself, like evolution itself, tells us that only the strong survive. So move your ass, stomp your feet, and set your mind free, because the very latest trip in this time-honoured compilation series is here. Blending deep house, Latin, tribal and electro-tech sounds, explosive programming with sparks of S-Man magic, the relentless groove of Release Yourself 6 is sure to set speakers ablaze as it’s unleashed on 4th June via Roger’s own Stealth Records label! The genesis of Release Yourself was certainly shaped by Roger’s life as a native New Yorker

No matter what sounds you profess to be your music of choice, chances are, that at some point over the last five years, you will have got your rocks off to Matt Edwards. Perhaps Matt’s most instantly recognisable nom de guerre, thanks in part to his inspirational melding of Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head to New Order’s Blue Monday, this is Matt’s DJ moniker and the guise under which he completes his incendiary remixes and re-edits. His love of re-edits, dance music’s oft-forgotten backbone, led Matt into the studio himself. His own re-edits and remixes, such as the aforementioned epoch-defining re-imagining for Ms Minogue, soon gave way to his own productions and since the floodgates opened there’s been no stopping the man known as, erm, Matthew E, Quiet Village, Sea Devils, Rekid and Radio Slave.

Originally hailing from England but having clearly arrived on the global scene nearly a decade ago, John has long since cemented his name in the pages of dance music history. 2007 placed him at 3rd best DJ in the world position. His list of achievements is groundbreaking to say the least.

Recently, John Digweed has held a weekly show on London based Kiss 100. The first hour features a new and upcoming releases-type mix by John and the latter portion of the show features a guest mix. The guest lists over the years have looked like a "Who's Who" roster of dance music dj's.

Artist of the Month: Simple

Konstantin aka. Simple / adino began his musical career in the womb, by whinding his umbilical cord around his arm and then plucking the cord with his toes. During his time in the womb he explored the realms of free jazz. Konstantin By the ripe age of 6-months had become a virtuoso of all sorts of empty grain boxes. By 8-months he grew bored and restless with empty grain boxes and began to fill them with varying amounts of resonant substances. After a while Konstantin began gaining interest of jazz artists at the time, he toured the world with Ornette Coleman and then retired after a long long long long bout with growing teeth. At 1 he retired. Then somewhere along the way, probably between the ages of 5 and 50, he came out of retirement to start producing and controlling the minimal game. He saw his first release on Beatport.com on Christmas Eve 2007 under Produkt Schallplatten. Several more releases on the way, and with this fresh mix from early January 2008, it's easy to see why he's got it together.

Ok so he doesn't play techno. But Treasure Fingers has been making people all over the country move it cross the dancefloor for a little over a year now. He's not new to creating music, though. Still making tracks for the ever-popular drum and bass trio Evol Intent, AJ, aka The Enemy, aka Treasure Fingers, knows how to please a crowd...any crowd. 2007 saw some great releases from Mr.Fingers, including his own Cross the Dancefloor and a couple remixes of recognizable tunes like Fergie's Glamorous and Ocelot's Our Time. With 2 residencies in Atlanta alone, TF is making a name for himself in and out of clubs differing in sizes, differing in location. 2008 is shaping up to a be another big year for AJ as well, as he has just signed to New York based Fool's Gold Records. Expect some official releases of the aforementioned, as well as some heavy new additions in the coming year.

Mix of the Week: Jamie Jones: Plattenleger

"Ive been Djing now for about 11 years. I first started at the tender age of 16. Over the years my style has varied, but the backbone of my sound has always been deep house, detroit techno and generally anything moody, edgy and groove based. In more recent years I have been producing, and have released records on Crosstown rebels, Freak N Chic, Poker Flat, Cocoon and Get Physical. As well as various remixes for different labels. In 2008 I hope to release my debut artist album and create and tour a live show" - Jamie

We really love this mix; it's just beautiful, minimal house/techno at its finest.

What could be said in a one-paragraph summary on a blog that would sufficiently describe Richie Hawtin's involvement with Techno? For those of you that have been living under a rock for the past 2 decades, Richie comes to us originally by means of Windsor, a province of Ontario, Canada. However, Richie is one of the many who helped shape Detroit Techno in the late 80s, and made it what it was and still is. If anymore needs to be written in this space, it could surely turn into a biography. We enjoyed this mix rather well, and we know you will too.

Off the Deep End

"Music has always been an integral part of my life. At home from an early age it’s always been about music. My father was a trumpet player and my older brother is a classic piano player and a composer. At the age of seven I started to playing on the drums, I played mostly rock music to start with and this gave me another take on the music world.

I’m currently working in the studio and trying to play my thoughts and feelings in to the music, I’m working with friends, Sushitech/Pariter artists who are helping me to find another side of myself. With these kind of various callobaretions between us, we share ideas and try to create something new. As an artist and DJ I’m always trying to find new styles. I’m doing everything that I can feel. There’s always something that is inspiring me to do the things I’m doing and feeling." -Yossi Amoyal

Track of the Week: Morthen Kiang

Morthen was born in the year 1982, supposedly on the sounds of New Order's "Blue Monday" . Morthen grew up in Maldegem, Belgium, where his passion for music started at a very early age. Just turning 4 years young, you could find the kid sitting in the grass, listening to the rhythmic moaning of the cows that surrounded him. This was his first encounter with what people like to call IDM today. Morthen not only likes cows, but also pigeons, forklifts, suitcases and 17 year old boys having german sounding dj names (I'm not entirely sure on the last one).

This track comes by means of time travel from the year 2005. Lush, spacey house with sounds related to Spirit Catcher or
MyMy.

Enjoy this untitled track from him, and check his myspace

Hallo Dort!

Tobias Lorsbach is a digitalfunk / minimaltechno / microhouse / ambient producer based in Mainz, Germany. He is the head of SpontanMusik and creator of projects like keinzweiter, elco park or superlauncher. He has released on labels like Klang, Overdrive, Force inc, overX, 3D, Archipel, Plex, Snork Enterprises and finally SpontanMusik.

Fresh from a Klang release as Antiga Prime, Tobias Lorsbach arrives on 3D with a doublepack of serious tech-house and techno trax. Moving from the minimal outgoings of Klang, this release is more uptempo, with some killer dancefloor cuts. Starting off with 'freespace city', one of the strongest tracks on offer, heavy brooding bassdrops with a classic 303 line rolling away, it takes only one listen to grab you. This may be an older mix that what is usually featured here, but you will love it nonetheless.

Outside the Box

Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (June 11, 1983), Eelka's story starts at the tender age of 17. After having worked in a music store for 4 years and spending lots of spare time there to get familiar with all the equipment, his own productions were slowly coming together. In 2003 the first EP was ready for release, on the, at that time, newly established Segment record label. Although this was a 250-copy limited pressing, it reached quite a few high players including John Digweed and Seb Fontaine. Overall reactions were great and '4.5 Billion Years' is still a much sought after record these days. In the years since then, we've seen him team up primarily with fellow Netherlands native, Nick Hogendoorn. Both are making you rethink the genre term Progressive and both are guaranteed to leave you wanting more.
